Tying a Sowbug Scud Pattern is pretty straight forward and easy to do. I tie most of my scuds pink. I'm not sure why trout love pink scuds but they just do. You can go on and on about why they eat them but the simple fact is they work and that's good enough for me. I typically tie them from size 10 - 16. In the middle of winter or when the flows are up I lean twords tying bigger pink scuds. As the year goes on I will downsize as needed.
Tying Material List
Hook - Size 12 Scud Hook
Bead - 5/32 Pink Lucent Bead, MFC Tungsten
Thread - Pink 6/0
Shell Back - Pink Saltwater Flashabou
Body - 50/50 blend of light shade rainbow scud dub and UV FL Pink Ice dub
Epoxy - UV Knot Sense and Loon Penetrator
You can substitute a few of the materials to suite your specific needs. Maybe change the bead and body material colors if you want a different colored scud specific to you body of water. When I did this vide there weren't as many epoxy options out there. This was the best set up I could find that wuld not leave a tacky residue on the shellback. You could use Bone Dry Epoxy as an alternate. It dries hard and is not tacky at all. It's a great product.
