This fly "saved" our early spring season last year, fishing a very cold, slow flowing river in snowy conditions. The fishing was very challenging because of it, and for some reason this was the only fly that worked for us. I tied mine in a Cookshill furnace hen "variant". This pattern has become a firm favorite of mine by now. Thank you - wishing you all the best!

Here in western Montana, we are restricted to two flies per line. Our river and stream fishing where I live is second to none. The best fishing lakes are all about two hours away, but worth the drive. I’ve been tying some of your lake (loch) patterns and will now include this one. I look forward to introducing them to our Montana trout. Thanks again for your contribution to our sport and hobby.

I think this is my favorite color combination for a Cruncher. A really good pattern that I somehow missed! Thanks for this from four years ago! Every time I think I'm almost caught up RU-vid throws a bunch more at me!! Have you found the JC eyes make a difference?
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 3 года назад
Hi Kerry, I would be happy to fish this pattern without the JC as I know it would fish just as well. Although I know of friends that would feel that it would work better with as they have caught many fish on it..Just like to thank you for all the kind words that you have been giving me which I really do appreciate... All the very best Davie

Hi Davie. Another lovely tying. In this video, you described a bleach treatment for the peacock, but not 'too long' to preserve the quill... can you give some guidance on how long and what to do for stripping herl with bleach, please? Many thanks.
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 6 лет назад
Hi JD, When I'm using the household bleach to remove the fine fibres from the peacock quills I watch them closely as at times you feel the herl is never going to come off and then it starts so once I feel enough have come off then I will remove it from the bleach...If there's some left then I will remove it with my nail as it normally comes away quite easily after this...I also soak the peacock quills in hair conditioner after I have rinsed them well after bleaching as it helps to stop them becoming brittle..I hope this helps you in some way... All the very best Davie..

I'v noticed in your videos when your using stripped quills they seem have a really brite white part to the quill compared to the ones I use.Is it the bleach that does that when your stripping them?
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 7 лет назад
Hi Gary, I bought the peacock eyes from Veniards in bulk of a 100 X-large and looked through them to pick the best for stripping for quills and this was one of the best of the bunch..If you know a shop that stocks their materials they may be able to order them for you, I would say at least 40% will be ideal for quilled bodies...I only use a household bleach to remove the herl as it will not lighten them... All the very best Davie..

Hi Davie, I have started to dye my own materials and I would like to strip some peacock quills, however, don't know how much and for how long do you leave them in the beach. many thanks and keep up the great work I'd be lost without you.
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 7 лет назад
Hi George, If you follow this video I have attached you shouldn't go wrong, I like to soak mine in hair condition afterwards as this helps to keep the quills from going brittle...I hope the dyeing is going well for you as it's helped me a lot over the years to get some really nice colours.. Hi Davie, l was wondering if you will be doing a video on how you go about bleaching the peacock eye, I did try but ended up ruining the eye🤪
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 4 года назад
Hi dongil123, just do a couple of eyes at a time so that you can keep an eye on them as I use about 1/3 bleach to warm water working the eyes back and forth until I see the fibres starting to come away...I prefer to stop before all the fibres come off as it's very easy to overdo it...I then wash the bleach off and rinse them before I soak them in hair conditioner to stop them going brittle..I hope this is of some help to you... All the very best Davie

Great tie as always Davie, may I suggest you clear up your speech so we can figure out the materials you used that you not posting. In short, you are mumbling and through the years it only gets worse. Also you could edit your closed captions as they come out in weird ways. For this reason I did not LIKE.
