Scottish/Canadian fly tier Ian Colin James created the Ian's Brass Ass in 2011 as a slimmer version of the Brassie, a classic wire-body fly invented in the 1960s. The Ian's Brass Ass was a featured fly on the Orvis website for years and is popular for Great Lakes steelhead, Czech-nymph tactics, trout, and grayling. It's a pure attractor pattern that's effective when attracting trout feeding on midge larva and pupae. The tightly-wrapped wire body adds weight to help the fly sink.
