Here are a couple options for tying rope handles to tools. One is a constrictor knot, the other is a barrel knot. I used hammers, but it would also work for shovels or any wood handle.

Today someone admired and complemented my midshipman’s hitch when they saw me adjusting the tension on the tarp over my truck bed. I know it’s a very basic thing to us but they’d never seen one in action before and were quite amazed with it. It made me feel effective. 🙂

@Christian Christoffersen - carry THREE pieces to get the complete experience, two of the same kind and a third one noticeably thicker or thinner - joining cordage of a different diameter is a thing of its own.

Great tute. Also wanted to mention that a high knot on the handle/haft can also be useful allowing for a "reach through" use of the lanyard loop which will cantilever the haft into your palm when the loop is properly utilized and the lanyard loop is correctly sized for the application. So exactly the same as your first example with the black cord only tied higher than your normal grip. For hammering or chopping motions the cantilever lanyard hold gives great retention and can reduce hand strain for repetitive tasks.

The double overlapped constrictor is very nice and fast, i like it. But I never fear going too fancy. A nice turk's head 5x4 looks good, provides a bulky stopper to the end of the handle and can be sinched with a bit of work.

Good info for beginners. I have a few different tools that I've added full length Turks Head handle wraps to as well as a couple of other different wrap styles. I like the feel of a cord wrapped handle on tools that I use regularly. It's much more comfortable and gives a secure grip when the handle is wet from sweat or water especially when combined with a proper wrist wrap. Good job on your videos. You make it easy for those unfamiliar with these techniques to follow along and easily make application of what you share as well as a nice refresher for us older folks that may have forgotten or moved on from the basics over the years.

Liked the video. I'm a proponent of lanyards on these types of tools. Just one thing though: I always place the lanyard about half way up the handle so the loop can be twisted in the hand to keep the tool from slipping out of grip, acting as a safety strap. With the lanyard at the end, fatigue can loosen the grip during use, resulting in poor aim and contact. Especially important with hatchets or machetes.

I used the parallel example on a hammer handle for my son. I haven't been able to see it, but apparently, it failed. I had overwrapped it with a paracord grip. After looking at the video though, I think it may be the ends you trim off need to be secured. They aren't trapped as well as a traditional constrictor knot. I think just melting them into a small glob would be enough. That's going to be what I try next.

Not sure if right place for this comment but it’s related to a lanyard method for a lighter (not lose it during a survival scenario). I used #12 bank line. Created and tied a prussik loop on lighter and added a larks head to slip over prussik loop knot at the end (soft shackle). It took 22” of bank line but with it in the middle of the lighter it holds very well and decent attachment loop for a carabiner or slip through necklace, etc.

Is it possible to add a loop handle that is balanced? In your example the loop is on one side so when you hold the loop it will sway to one side. If it was balanced then it wouldn’t sway either direction. Is something like this at all possible? A loop handle that is symmetrical (without drilling a hole in the handle)

Most people just hang off their backpack harness, but with wind, time and me being frugal makes me wonder. I would think you could do some form of carrier or barrel harness for a 60l barrel which we all use canoe tripping. All in all just looking for a way to secure a bucket/barrel to some kind of paracord/mule tape harness, then to be hung classically in the tree from bears. Perhaps because by grabbing your opponent's weapon, you could also immobilize their arm and pull them wherever you like? If you don't attach yourself to your weapon, you are free to drop it if somehow it gets stuck or your opponent manages to catch it, and switch to a sidearm so you still have a fighting chance.

Your first knot is a double-strand constrictor knot (never heard someone call it a barrel knot). A constrictor knot is extremely useful, if you don't intend to open it later and want a very durable knot with minimal cordage. With a straight handle, I would make a small notch - no matter, how much you tighten the knot, it may come loose over time, sending the tool flying around. Or you could put one or two small nails between the strands through the knot. But what is wrong with drilling a hole at the end of the handle and feed a loop through, which would be my first choice?
