From Mike Valla's "Classic Dry Fly Box" published in 2010, the Batwing Coachman likely dates back to the 1930-40s as it was offered in one of Ray Smith's brochures. Smith was a legendary yet underappreciated Catskill tier.
Hook: #12-16 dry fly
Thread: Black
Tail: Brown hackle fibers
Body: Peacock herl
Hackle: Brown rooster
Wing: White hackle tips

Great classic fly. I tie a fly similar to it but as a wet fly with an India hen feather, swept back and a wire rib in size 14 and 16. It is a great Gunpowder River fly. Thanks, Matt, for another fun video.

Great to hear Ed! I might have to try it; I've got plenty of old Indian capes in a drawer somewhere. :-)

Morning Matt! I really like the chunky peacock herl body. I'll be tying a few today. Thanks for taking the extra time to research the history for the flies you present. The history is just as interesting as the tying. Have a great day!

Good morning Matt. Another beautiful morning on the desert. Out of 70 Denier in black…here I thought you bought that stuff by the case. 😁. Nice dry fly and I enjoyed today’s tie. Surprised me that you used hen hackle on that second fly. I don’t use or tie a lot of dry flies but somewhere along the way I thought it wasn’t stiff enough for dry flies. Not sure where I got that idea from. Have a great weekend Matt. You must be close to leaving on your fishing trip. Good luck and safe travels.

Thanks John! Yep, this time next week and I should be half way down to NC. Got a lot more work to do to get ready, but it's all fun. Online scouting of all the waters I want to try. I'm sure I'll hit a few I fished last spring, but I always like to find new ones too. I'll definitely be taking the GoPro but getting nice fish while recording is always hit-or-miss. Hope you've been well my friend!

Nice fly Matt 🪰Batwing 🦇🤔hmm. Hey, you could fish that dry with C. Jim Pray's Cock Robin as a dropper What a dynamic duo 🤓👍All kidding aside, you are the archaeologist of fly patterns.Hope your 5K went well. Thanks!

Hey, thanks Joe! It was a fun day with the daughter. No speed records here with a few walk breaks, but anytime I can get my 16-year old daughter to hang out with me, I'll take it. :-) We've got another black-tie Navy ball tonight, and then one more week before I head down to the Smoky Mountains for my annual spring pilgrimage. I can't wait! If the weather is as nice next week as it was this week, it's going to be amazing. :-)

I like using Chartreuse, red, or wine 70 denier thread. I always try to keep a extra spool of each just in case
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies 6 месяцев назад
Great tip! I keep a pretty wide assortment on hand but can't believe I let myself run out of black. :-)
@slickydicky
@slickydicky 6 месяцев назад
@SavageFlies I like to think I do it on purpose lol it's more like, when I place a order I just get a couple extra spools "just in case" so now I have a spool safe full of thread and most if it is those three colors and a spool or two of black 😅

Oh man, today's fly is number 592 so I'm not sure. Let me do a quick scan and see if I can find it. Any idea how long ago it was?

Okay Steve- I found a red, white and blue streamer which we did for a 4th of July name-the-fly contest. It ended up being called the Woody Williams. Are you thinking of this one? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uL2ku5o-PNo.htmlsi=S_f8QwFh_OzN7aom
