Davie, these are the most gorgeous fly patterns I have ever seen. So well tied, and I cannot wait to tie some and fish the still waters of Kentucky and Tennessee. Keep the videos coming, they are spectacular. Thanks for your contribution to this fabulous sport.

If I use a brush with the resin, what do you suggest I use to clean the brush afterwards to avoid it going hard. Thanks for a great video.

This was posted quite some time ago, but i wanted to ask the purpose of the varnish? Is it just to provide a shiny, hard coating to protect the fly? Thanks
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 6 лет назад
Hi Kayak Uprising, It's both really, though I also prefer to varnish over UV resins. as they can be slightly tacky so varnishing seals it and keeps it clear and shiny.. All the very best Davie...

Davie, hello from the mountains of Colorado! I have fished your grey boy and glass buzzer patterns on still water in larger sizes with great success. Here in Colorado our rivers have midges in sizes no larger than 18. Most are sizes 20 and smaller. Which one of your buzzer patterns would you recommend to be tied in the smaller sizes to be fished as midges? Thanks!

Hey Davie,,nice vids by the way,,if you have time could you answer quick ?,, when I use bug bond some times I am left with a sort of misty finish instead of high gloss,, am i not using enough, too much,do you have to work it into the materials, or am i taking out the vice too soon and touching b4 right set,,i have the pro kit and light,,cheers john
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 10 лет назад
Hi John, If you coat the resin with a thin coat of varnish after setting it with the torch you will find it will keep it clear as I do this all of the time now. The reason you may be getting a misty look is that resins can be a little bit tacky after curing so it feels greasy to touch... I'm glad you enjoy the videos... All the very best Davie

Hi Davie. Thank you for all the Nice videos! I was wondering Wich uv lamp you Are using? Best regards kim
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 8 лет назад
Hi Kim, I use a pro torch that came from bug-bond and it's been the best for me as it uses a single battery and lasts quite long unlike the first one it took three batteries and run down very quickly, it's important that the light is strong as the resin will not set properly..I'm glad you enjoy the videos...I've attached a link to the torch I use... www.veniard.com/product2519/section188/ All the very best Davie

@DavieMcPhail Hi Dave, Just curious if you have came across a better UV light source. Also what wavelength of UV does the bugbond light emit? I've seen some actual lamps that you can plug in, but are super expensive and want to know if they would work for setting the resin before possibly purchasing. Cheers, Jeff

Davy a great pattern. Where do you by your well marked peacock eyes from. Found it really difficult to source good quality ones.
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 10 лет назад
Hi Mark Robinson, The Peacock Eye's that I use come from a wholesale company called Veniards, I get the local shop to order 100 then I'll sort through them to pick the best quills and out of 100 I'll get about 40% to 60% good enough and the rest I'll give away to friends...I've attached a good video showing how to remove the herl from the eyes.. All the very best Davie

Hi Davie, excellent and educational fly tying, I would like to thank you so much. Which Bugbond do you recommend, the Original or the Lite? Thank you for taking the time. All the best for 2013. Ken Trueman.

Hi Davie, this is a bit off topic but I was wondering if you may have an answer for me... I am contemplating using bug bond for some rod building applications and was wondering if it is possible to color bug bond? Any info would be really appreciated! Great videos btw!
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 7 лет назад
Hi Keith, I've never tried to colour the bug-bond though when I have used marker pens it will sometimes mix with it...There is a UV nail varnish which ladies use this may be worth looking at if you need a certain colour..I would test the resin on an old piece of cane just to see how flexible it is before you apply to a fishing rod... All the very best Davie

There is a Waldron vise is stores theese days that go by the name of Snowbee. Not the same look, but quite simplistic. Allthough I think it has a few new features compared to the LAW. If you do a search for Snowbee-Waldron you'll get a few hits.

Hi Mark Westhead, The peacock eyes that I use come from a wholesale company called Veniards. If you know a shop that stocks their materials, they have to order the extra large peacock eyes as these are the ones you want...Thank you for your kind words. All the very best Davie

hi dave ,great video...... i was wanting to ask if you could recommend a vice that would be able to take small hooks for trout but big enough to take a big hook for sea and pike flies , i am wanting to learn and was looking online but so many out there and dont have a clue cheers
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 8 лет назад
Hi Neil, There's many good vises out there but not all are ideal for small flies as well as large saltwater and pike flies..I used a Dyna- King vice that came with a standard jaw which will easily hold from a size 10 hook up and I also bought the midge jaws for the vice which allowed me to tye easily down to a size 24..I hope this is of some help to you but if not please get back to me... All the very best Davie

Varnish is non-water based, whereas some head cement can be water-based.

Hi Dave, thank you for another fantastic pattern from your vice. I have tried it and our Norwegian mountain trout seems to find it very interesting. I have only one problem, the Bug bond coating are loosening after caching a few trout. Do you have any idea how to avoid that to happen? Will the Bug bond be stronger and harder the longer it will be exposure by the UV-light? Best regards Jens

Davie, do you dye your peacock eyes after removing all the fuzzys? By the way, your idea to use bleech to remove the fuzzys works awesome, saves a lot of time with an eraser head.
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 8 лет назад
Hi Paul, I normally dye them first then remove the herl but using the bleach can remove some of the colour from the quills though certain colours I don't mind especially yellow.. All the very best Davie
