Always a pleasure watching your videos Davie. I'm frantically filling my boxes ready for the season starting :) Havent had many days on the Grayling this year because of the naff weather so looking forward to early trout season on the Lochs up in the Trossachs.

Looks as though you have a big following among us here in West Virginia. You'll have to tie some Sulfurs, rusty spinners, and Ausable Bombers.

What size hook is the most commonly used? Would smaller sizes be a better choice? Trico patterns often are smaller and this pattern looks like it might work perfect for them. It certainly looks better than other Trico emerger patterns I saw in the past. I was fishing a small native Brook Trout stream in late spring and witness a hatch happen last year. I never saw one occur before and I fished this stream for 20-years. I also never realized how many native trout lived in this tiny stream until then. Sadly, I had nothing in my box they wanted. However, it was still amazing to witness. I moved further downstream and caught fish but there was nothing hatching. Then went back upstream and watch some more.

Hi Gizmo Carr, These large midge hatch mostly in the lochs and lakes of the UK and Ireland and they do vary in size but I would say if you tyed these pupa in sizes 10s to 14s you will catch throughout the season..The only midge hatch I have seen on the river is at the beginning of the season and they are far smaller more like a size 18 and smaller.. Hi Piscator Flies, I've used this method for many years though I have to be honest with the amount of flies I have tyed over the years I forget many of the methods I have used until I start working on patterns that I used them for just like this buzzer...I know I have used it though in a few other videos as well..I'm glad you liked the fly and the method.. I really like this! In the lakes I fish in Oregon I use bead head midge patterns under an indicator, but I’m liking this for an emerger. Do you fish this on a floating line and slowly figure eight it back just under the surface?

Hi Britt Lander, When you are fishing midge pupa on the lakes and lochs you have to be able to get the flies down to where the pupa are, like in the early season they will be close to the bottom and as the day goes on they will slowly work their way up to the surface where this fly does well...I prefer to control them with a dry or emerger like the bubble cdc patterns you may have seen me tye on my channel..I also like to twitch and pull the fly as this can induce a take as the pupa make their way to the surface..I mostly use a float line as well... I live in West Virginia, USA. There's a river called the Elk. They'll use size 32 hooks for midge our nymph patterns. I have tried tying on 28s and I have 21 years of experience. I can't figure out how to tie so small. Could you maybe try to tie a 28 soft hackle or midge? I'll either snap the thread or I'll completely ruin the fly. I could tie you a few #10 Doc Oliverio green drakes in exchange. They were designed for West Virginia streams and I was taught by Oliverio's son and also Joe Messenger Jr.

Look up a Davie's "Stewart's Black Spider". Starling neck hackle on a 28 and you are good to go. Drop it 24" behind a small dry.

@@possumkingproductionsmike8089 I'm still baffled at the detail people put into tiny things. It was really funny when I took my dad on the Elk to teach him to fly fish. There were maybe a dozen rich guys using these plastic bobbers and specs for flies. I refuse to use a bobber fly fishing. We got a few looks from folks and a guide was fishing between clients and commented that my dad and I needed to try a spec. We were using a #10 dry and I was literally teaching my dad how to cast and wade in the stream. I wanted him to be able to see the fly to get a feel for everything. A 24 inch rainbow rose from a stillwater hole and demolished the fly. The others fishing the same still area were taken aback. I gave my dad my 6wt since its easier to cast and it was doubled over. The fish nose dived into the boulders and shredded the line. Long story short, we didn't catch as many as the guys with the bobbers and tiny flies but we got into the big ones. great tutorial again..question ...I have aquired a few reels with line but I dont know what weight the lines are..any way of telling ??.. would be a shame to strip them ..thanks..

Hi Bob, Is there a sticker on the spool? when you buy a line it comes with one and it says the weight which most would stick to the reel or the spool. Another way to tell is the size of the reel the line is on as you'll have to buy a reel to suit the line you are using as it will need this so that it fits...If you are still not sure just give them a go with the rod you use and if they are too light or heavy you will know...I'm glad you enjoyed the video... You can weigh the first 30' of line excluding the level tip then compare with the AFTM scale

@@DavieMcPhail hi davie no stickers just different coloured lines..I think colour coding would be good for fly lines..but there are so many brands out there..what damage if I used say a 7 weight line on a 4 weight rod ..??..still pretty new to this ..lifetime of sitting on a box ..or creell..lol..keep safe ..thanx for the reply...

Hi Domingo Rodrigez, I'm sorry I struggled to find any as it's been a while since I bought these hooks which came through a friend in Ireland...I also use the Fulling Mill Super Grub as a light wire buzzer but it's in bronze which is ok and a very strong hook.. All the very best Davie...
