I say we ask her majesty to knight this man. Davie does it again. breaks it down and simplifies even the most complex looking patterns. thanks Davie..

A beautiful piece of work, Davie. I notice some comments refer to smaller flies, so this seems a good opportunity to draw attention to the video in which you wing a teal, blue and silver using a single teal feather cut to a V-shape. Useful for Peter Ross too. When tying smaller flies with bronze mallard wings such as the Connemara Black or the Dunkeld, I sometimes use a piece from a single feather, rolled. I sometimes do the same with Medicines too.

Davie, I love this fly. I will be tying a few of these and swinging them this spring for Steelhead here in the Michigan in the US. Thank you very much!

I have always been amazed by these salmon flies! They are elegant, refined. What also surprises me is that in fact these classic flies all have a stylized silhouette of shrimp. I wonder if, originally, it was on purpose or if it was a coincidence! In any case, well done for these delicate assemblies.

I dress all my wets on a fulling mill size 12 comp\heavy. I also wrap short on the shank and it works. My wets look size 14 on a 12 hook. This is a great style off tying for all game fish patterns. 👏👏👏. Respect from Co. Down N.I.

Hi Davie,I've been meaning to drop you a line for some time, to thank you for your videos. I now consider myself a pretty good fly tyer - every fly in my box right now came from my own vice, but you taught me how to do it. I've been watching for years, and it was frustrating at the start. Early on I decided to never put a fly in my box that I wasn't 100% happy to fish with. In the beginning I'll admit that I'd often sit down for a couple of hours and put nothing in the box at the end, but in time, with your guidance and some persistence on my part, more and more flies went into the box. People often praise me on what they see in my fly-box these days and ask where I bought them. I always tell them the following, I made them myself, but I had a good teacher - Davie McPhail. Several of these people now follow you as I do, and learn from you as I have, because you were kind enough to share your expertise on line. I just thought it was time I told you what a positive influence you've been and thanked you for the countless hours and hours of satisfying, engrossing(and yes, sometimes frustrating) creative pleasure you've allowed me to enjoy. So, Davie, thank you, you're a Legend.

Hi Ron Holmes, It's very kind of you to let me know how much I have helped you with your fly tying. Slowly filling your box and learning all the patterns is a great way to learn but it's all down to you as I can only help in a small way so well done to you.. Getting priase from your friends is great but when you catch fish on your own flies and patterns is alsso a great feeling..Thank you again for your kind words as they do mean a lot.. All the very best Davie...

Another great fly Davie! I appreciate seeing you tie a fly using readily available materials. I've dabbled with a few Spey and Atlantic Salmon flies, but have found the biggest problem I have is selecting the right materials for the fly. Many are difficult to find and/or very expensive to purchase. In fact, I've blogged about my experience with this on my RiverKeeper Flies website. I didn't think about using the pheasant rump feathers for hackle. It will be a good way to practice my technique. I'll be sure to give it a try.

Now I know why I have such a hard time with the bronze mallard. First I am taking the good wing too low on the feather and secondly I never tie a fly this big. You realize I only tie and most of the guys I give them to have never asked for a spey. I will try and see if it is easier on a big hook. All the best, Sorry for the two postings. All the best to you and your family. Sean

Davie, I've seen some wildly spectacular flies that you (and others) have tied and I've often wondered what, if any, insect are you trying to imitate? If you are not trying to imitate anything in nature, then how and why does it attract a fish? Also, is it possible for you to demonstrate what these flies are supposed to look like in water, and compare them with their real life counterparts? Thanks, and keep up the good work. I really enjoy your vids.

Hi DeskAgent, When i'm tying a fly especially for trout it's to give an impression of the fly in it's different stages in size, colour, shape, movement and presentation..Most large flies like one in the video swim very much like a small fish as it has a teardrop shape giving it a lot of movement..I have to be honest you could write a few books on this subject so this is a very small insight on this..I'm glad you enjoy the videos and I hope this is of some help to you... All the very best Davie..

I remember than a jungle coq is a good feather for the salmons flys,like eyes of littles fishs but in reality it is feathers ( very interesting ).

Fantastic fly Davie, I was disappointed to find the fulling mill superglue is not available on the U.S. Fulling Mill site. Perhaps it is not worth importing since there are so many brands. I just wanted to tell you in case you didn't know. I wouldn't want you to have a U.Sl fan ask and be disappointed. My tying has improved immensely since I started watching you and others tie. Thanks so much for sharing your talent. All the best to you and yours. Sean

Hi Colbee, No it was natural though I have dyed the lighter feathers fiery brown as they are the most common, they also dye black really well...I have attached a link to some for you to see.... www.caddisflyshop.com/natural-ringneck-rump-patch.html All the very best Davie

Nice one Davie, toward the end when finishing head region you mentioned zig-zagging thread, was that for shape or strength? Thanks!!
@DavieMcPhail

Hi Larry, If I felt the thread was going to slip I would do this but it will also shape and strengthen the head as long as you don't over do it...I'm glad you liked the fly... All the very best Davie..

Hi Nicholai, Hen or cock hackles work fine for the smaller flies but you will find a few feathers from pheasants, duck, coot and most game birds are very good for smaller flies.. All the very best Davie..
