This week we finally finish the metal roofing. Having the metal completed across the whole house really ties it all together! However, seeing the finished product has us second guessing a design choice and considering taking the hard route to get the look we want.

We are a couple who are building our own home from the ground up in the mountains of West Virginia. After living near the city our entire lives we finally decided to sell it all, pack up our 3 kids and live in an RV on our 73 acres while building our own debt free, off-grid house and learning to live a more self-reliant life.
Our house build is documented entirely on our main channel "Wild Wonderful Off-Grid" and our family life vlogs can be found on our secondary channel "Wild Wonderful After Show"

Josh, it may not be perfect, but you guys FREAKING BUILT A HOUSE and not just any house, but essentially your dream house and you did it together while building love and strengthening your family. That lightning visible from the great room window is unreal. Love all you guys!

Just a suggestion from a former trim carpenter: it’s going to be hard to keep consistent gaps on each plank between the rafters. Over time the wood will expand/contract and it won’t be as clean as you’d like. You also won’t be able to match that design in the eaves because the sheeting runs outside the rafter tails. A good compromise would be to install the planks over everything and then add faux rafters on top of the planks. I’d just rip some 2x4s and apply them to match the spacing on the eaves. Love your work, btw. Best homesteading channel on YT

Josh you should watch the part of the video where you're asking the boys to choose hard or easy. The boys are a mirror image of you with your arms crossed and swinging. It looks so cool. You guys are doing so great, keep it up.

Bad days always get better after watching your videos. With the exception of the fire. When I was in 2nd grade I came home on school bus and our house was on fire. That was in 1970. Something I will never forget.

Josh and Erin, don't sweat the small imperfections. I use the the 30 day rule. After 30 days you won't even notice them anymore. The house looks awesome.

Change orders are what makes the lowest bidder profitable.....you can always count on change orders. Fun fact, went to a billfish tournament recently and one of the sport-fishing boat names was Change-Order!

I can't wait until the decking has a nice rail around it and a few outdoor chairs and table and you can sit in the evening outside and enjoy the sunset, or maybe have some outdoor diners.

Josh depending on your materials be sure to keep the board seams in line from one rafter bay to the next and so on. If they are off by 1/8" each board, from bottom to top it will get way off. If the materials are spot on, exact width, you should be fine. If the board widths are slightly off, use a single board for each of the bays, good luck!

Love this family! Love this build! Love these videos (seen them all!) But, as a Maintenance Supervisor, I have two things. 1. Gloves when handling that sheet metal! Kevlar ones are still light enough, but won't cut through. 2. Fall arrest harness when on the lift. No one ever "expects" to fall off a lift. Stay safe!!

I laughed so hard when Josh looked at his wrist, like it had a watch on it but didn't, and said; "In about three hours, we've got about three hours until it rains to get this job done.
