Well many of you said you wanted me to try and tie and video while watching my kids. You asked for it! HAHA. This is definitely not my normal tying video, but I find it gives a unique perspective on how I film my tying videos. If this is something you like, please give a thumbs up. If its not, let me know please what you would like me to change. Trying something new, there is always a learning curve to how to do these new types of videos.
For those of you just showing. up to my channel for the first time, please know that my fly tying videos are usually much better quality. I work very hard to release high quality videos with voice overs and highly edited. They usually run 3-10 minutes and are great for learning to tie a specific pattern. This is a different type of video I am trying out during this quarantine time. My wife is a Nurse and its just me right now at the house because I am not working in an essential field. She is rarely home, so I am doing my best to take care of the kids, do housework, and keep filming, which is tough. So this is my attempt at trying to film without doing a voice over. I will refine this process soon, and hopefully even sooner than that, get back to my regular filming style. Anyway, please check out my other videos.
As I stated, there were a few items I talked about in the video that I said I would post the links to them here.
Hackle pliers - amzn.to/2W0wr4A
Magnetic material clips - amzn.to/2xUaXyk
Ceramic tweezers- amzn.to/3cT2k5E

I am just preparing to make my first fly tying videos, and I set up my camera so that it is mounted with a c-clamp to a floating shelf about 36 inches above the table. The arm that holds the camera goes up and to the left at a 45 degree angle (I am right handed). I felt like this was going to be the best way to mount the camera in front of me without obstructing my vision or my hands. After setting it up, I really believe I have it set up in the best way possible. I don't have a super nice camera, but I picked up a macro lens for my gopro hero12 black, and it is very one-dimensional but shockingly good for close up shots at a 6-12 inch distance. It's also very small and doesn't get in the way. Getting pumped now to start producing videos like yours - I've been watching a lot of your stuff!

Awesome man, good luck! Yeah it’s an enjoyable process that when you make a good video it’s almost as good of a feeling as nailing that fly you have been trying to tie for months! Haha! I wish you the best in your endeavor

I want to start doing tying videos again. loved making them and want to start actually doing voice overs in them, but haven't made them since having my daughter years ago. This is exactly how I would expect my filming process would go. Great videos. I love your work always

Glad the video helped, and good luck with the new videos! Kids for sure can make it difficult to film, that’s why I did voice overs for so long. I can film and then at night when they sleep do the voice over. Otherwise there would be too much screaming in the day. Haha!

Coming back to your video again as I am trying to configure my setup and got a nicer microphone. Any tips on how you go about doing your voice overs and still managing to sound as if you are speaking in real time?@@McFlyAngler

Late to the party, but wanted to comment: Thank you for the video! I'm just getting into tying videos, as opposed to still photography step-by-step, with one under my belt. Took three tries to get the live audio while I'm shooting/tying due to my OCD about my (bad) speech habits. Since I'm a portrait photographer I already had DSLRs capable of video/audio and access to Adobe software, so decided to use two cameras from viewer's POV and spliced wide & close views as needed. But more to my point. I have photographed School Portraits for over 30 years, mostly elementary and younger. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this Live video with you at home with your kids. I laughed and chuckled through most of the 20+ minutes. Thanks for sharing your "real" life as a tyer and instructor. BTW: Next stop is one of your "better" tying videos. All the best Rich

Thanks Rich! Yeah give it a go, I’m sure you will do great. I have ocd also but had to learn to just go with it. Sometimes mistakes are made and I find people learn from the mistakes more than the actual well tied portions of the videos. Lol! Good luck and hope it goes well. God bless!

I prefer filming with the camera facing me. It just makes life a lot easier and it never gets in the way. Love the real life video.
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 4 года назад
Yeah I do as well, but it makes for a reverse with someone watching. I’m one of the few that does it the “correct” way. Haha! Sorry had to say that. Anyway. Yeah it Definitely makes it easier. However my camera doesn’t have a flip screen so I can’t see what I’m filming if I do that.
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 4 года назад
I move the angles around about 15-20 times per video. Watch my tying videos. I try to get the best angle with most my shots.

@@McFlyAngler Lol, It's only reverse for a righty and since I tie lefty it's correct for a righty, lol. A flip screen is a must for filming from the front, though. I've seen most of your videos and you do a great job. Looking forward to seeing more.

Oh yeah, awesome! I wish I was left handed. Sorry if what I said sounded rude I didn’t mean it that way. Dude man, life would be easier if I was lefty. Dang! Hahaha!

Great addition to your video's man! Although I only have 1 kid, I know what it's like trying to do your hobbies while managing a zoo. Keep it up man and keep pumping the videos out, with or without the kids in the background. Either way, we're still learning.

Years ago, prior to the digital age, I shot a fly tying series for Public Television. We used studio lights and High 8 video. I had two camera people one on each shoulder, they took care of close ups and the whole setup. I chose shirts that provided a good background for the flies I tied. Having the main camera pointed straight at and angled slightly down, was a good position for working. We didn't have LED lights so the heat was crazy. It melted my dubbing wax and required me to use SPF 60 sunscreen, to stop burning. Crazy times! Editing a 45 minute show took about five hours, but at the time it didn't matter, I was young, I healed quick! LOL! My kids were very young but they really enjoyed seeing Dad on television, life was fun!

@McFlyAngler 4 года назад
Yeah for sure! Things have changed. It actually takes me more than that long for my videos cause I do the editing also. If I was going to do it all at once, it would be about 8-13 hours per fly tying video. Lots and lots of work. This one here only took 3-4 hours cause I didn’t do much editing or voice over.

Your parenting style is similar to mine. Kids are great. How does it turn out if you drop your ISO by a few clicks?
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 16 дней назад
@@ntherrington I mean when you drop iso, it gets darker. Depends on how much light is hitting the sensor. I would recommend for people just starting out to put it on auto.

Can you share a link to the floor stand that your camera is mounted to? Enjoyed seeing your setup and the results that you are getting.

What kind of camera are u using and you mentioned a spacer? Can you add some detail? Are you using a macro lens as well. So many questions i know
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 4 года назад
Lol! Here I’ll send links to all the items. The spacer is called a macro extension tube. Turns basic lenses into macro lense. I just use the kit lense with my camera. Here you can see ur here... amzn.to/2YqnyDV. The spacer... amzn.to/2yhrLPN
