This moody and contemplative piece is the second movement of Tyler Mire's 'Shades' clarinet quartet. Here's how I introduced it from the stage when we performed it recently:
"The next work on our program is from the American trumpeter Tyler Mire. He specialises in writing and arranging works for jazz big-bands, but he's also worked extensively as a studio musician and composer for video games. Velvet Melancholy was one of the works he wrote for his Doctoral recital last year, and to me, it feels like this piece would be right at home accompanying a modern noir film. It's the sound of walking alone with your thoughts through drizzly urban streets. That's my take on it, anyway!"
You can follow Tyler's work on twitter ( x.com/mire_tyler ), or his RU-vid channel ( / @tylermire ).
Recorded in room 3047 at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, on the 24th of May, 2024. Many thanks to Georgia Webb for helping to facilitate this recording.
