It was once dubbed the most dangerous book in England and anyone found with a copy could well have been executed. There are now just three copies the Tyndale Bible in the world. One of them is at St Paul's Cathedral and will go on display for the first time ever. Anna O'Neill has been to take a look.

John Foxe wrote that William Tyndale was not afraid in the least on the day of his execution. He was ready to meet the Lord. He knew his purpose in life had been fulfilled.

They're not Roman Catholic. St Paul's is Anglican - church of England. Anglicanism is protestant. Good grief.

William Tyndale translated from the Greek for his 1526 New Testament, not the Latin.

That's what we've been told, but in part he took from Erasmus. Erasmus was using Hebrew and Greek to correct what he thought was errors in the Latin vulgate, not to do away with it.

"We do not intend to tear up the old and commonly accepted edition (the Latin vulgate), but amend it where it is corrupt, and make it clear where it is obscure". *John Alfred Faulkner, Erasmus the Scholar (Eaton and Mains, New York, 1907), 135.

This bible is one of the New Testament printings that Tyndale published early on, and it was translated directly from the original Greek, not from Latin. He only occasionally consulted the Latin Vulgate and Erasmus's Latin version for guidance on sentance structure, but he didn't translate directly from them. The Latin (and some German translations of the Latin) was used entirely by Myles Coverdale for his own bible (The Coverdale Bible published in 1535) and also to finish the Tyndale bible in 1537 (now known historically as The Matthews Bible because it had to be printed under the pseudonym Thomas Matthews). John Rodgers used Coverdale's Latin-to-English work to finish Tyndale's bible because neither he nor Coverdale could read or write Greek and Hebrew like Tyndale could. Coverdale's work was only used to help finish the last chapters of the Old Testament after 2nd Chronicles. The Old Testament books from Genesis to 2nd Chronicles were translated from the original Hebrew by Tyndale, and were given to John Rodgers just before Tyndale's execution in 1536. John Rodgers himself would also be executed later as a heretic by Queen "bloody" Mary I in 1555, only four years after the last printing of The Matthews Bible. To this day, in Belgium, there is a huge stone memorial to William Tyndale on the very spot he was executed.

Tyndale translated directly from the Greek & Hebrew and used the word Congregation ( and NOT "church" ) UNLIKE Wiclif that earlier translated from the Latin that used the word "church" the word "church" was CREATED BY THE RCC. the word "church" was NEVER USED BY THE APOSTLES, they understood the congregation of Born Again believers as a BODY, that it's HEAD (Jesus) was in Heaven directing each individual part of the body, each part of the body was considered equal.

Tyndale translated from Greek into English, not Latin. He used Erasmus' Greek NT as the basis for his translation into English. I'm very glad to see alot of comments correcting this video!

Hello! Did you read Septuagint? The Greek translation of the ORIGINAL Old Testemant made by faithful godly Jews in III century BC. The Hebrew Masoretic text of the Old Testament was made in X century AD... It is recommended to read classical trustworthy translations of Septuagint (in English it is Brenton's translation 1851).
