Wow this is quite helpful Andrea! some new tips and tricks to try. Although for me my sugars fluctuate a lot when i exercise. So if i'm doing cardio/ burning calories and keeping the heart rate up i mostly always remove my pump because my sugars go low irrespective of anything. But for stuff like yoga, etc where my heart rate is relatively relaxed I never take my pump off because once i did and trust me my BG was above the roof haha!

You're so welcome! It sounds like you've got plenty of tips and tricks up your sleeve too! I'm practically the same as you - cardio pump turned down or off (on the whole) and less strenuous exercises that pump is on like donkey kong!! Hehe!! :)

hello, I was reading your comment and I find that to be so strange. I don’t do yoga, but I can relate to the BG spiking. I’m into bodybuilding so my workouts are more intense which have my sugars go high due to overstressing the body and adrenaline.. when you go high, do you stay at that number or do you drop? And how long does it typically take you to see a GOOD/ BALANCED sugar number? Or do you sometimes have to correct for that high your running due to your workout??? pls give me advice 🥹

Hi Andrea, I really enjoy your videos and it was really nice to see that I am not the only one having issues with my diabetes. I recently started using the Minimed 670 G pump with CGM which has made a big difference. I am however still struggling in managing my diabetes in combination with the sport I love which is road running. My BG levels are fairly stable with little or no exercise, but as soon as I start running, my readings start to go crazy and quite often end up with a hypo. I usually plan on running 16 km per day, but sometimes are not able to do so due to hypo's. I always have glucose tablets with me which normally stabilizes my BG, but they do not always give me enough energy to complete my daily millage target. It is very frustrating.

Thankyou for sharing Andrea. I didn't understand how coffee could affect levels. I would have thought it wouldn't count at all? I went for exercise on my bike , thought I had plenty of supplies, 2 popper's 2 bananas , no glucose tabs, ( would have been useful ) Stopped for break , and was dropping fast, had all my goodies went to 3.1 bit scary, until slowly began to rise so I could ride home. This was the afternoon, and as you say , more insulin sensitive then in the morning. As you say every day is unique with type 1 , can do this same ride another day , and no problem. Have baked those cookies today, yummy, my wife and I had 2 each straight away. Went from 4.1 to 6.1 , perfect. 😊

@ShesDiabetic 4 года назад
Oh thank you so so much Rex!! I got so excited reading that you had actually made and enjoyed the cookies and that they were kind to your blood sugars!!! THE DREAM!!! :) I don't know why exactly, but for me coffee will bring me up one or two points. I drink decaf coffee with only a splash of unsweetened almond milk and yet...a rise! I don't know why (I do know that it's worse with caffeinated, thus why I drink decaf) but it just seems to be the way things go so thus I factor this into my calculations. I'm so sorry to hear of your scary low on the bike ride...gah, those are never fun!!! I'm glad you got back safe and sound though!! Sending you and your wife so much joy, safety and love in this tricky time! Enjoy those cookies!!

Hello, I really love the content you create i’m not on a pump, but i’ve noticed during my body building workouts my #s been spiking due to intense workouts but to help prevent a hi sugar spike would it be best to maybe inject a few more more insulin units when eating my post snack meal? I typically eat about an hour or and a half prior to a session that consumes protein and a few carbs.

There are times were my blood sugar rises during a workout.. i researched and found nothing. I do believe that it rises a bit because one of the places the body stores gluecose is in the muscles.. sooo maybe it some of that gets released into my system when I really move those muscles..it will eventualy burn away but it will need some more work then normal

41 years old. Houston Texas. TYPE 1 for 37 years. Avid runner.... Ok with that outta the way😊 , yes for many, blood sugar will spike w certain types of exercise. Often w "spikers", you'll have a rebound low several hours port workout (6 to 10 hours later). For me, spikes come from weight training, or exercising with a 270 or higher blood sugar. While everyone is different, you have to experiment amd see the patterns. What was eaten prior, when was the last bolus before the exercise, and what type of exercise? Once you see a pattern, you can tweak accordingly. I'm not gon lie, it's super aggy, but you'll see your pattern and be better able to attack workout highs/lows. ❤

I took my 9-year old T1D daughter out biking Saturday after breakfast. I thought not bolusing for protein would be enough to not have to give her sugar during the ride. I should have given her 1/2 the insulin for her breakfast. Normally we go before breakfast to avoid a meal before exercise (with lots of insulin on board) but it was chilly out. It still wasn't too bad though. Maybe even a 3/4 bolus without a bolus for protein would have worked out too. We'll have to keep experimenting.

It sounds like you're brain is in the best place - thinking of solutions and other options! Good for you!! A lot of it is trial and error and reflecting on when things actually go wrong. Sometimes it's the mistakes that can teach you the most, I think! Also - bike riding tends to really lower my BG (just personally) because it's using those big muscular groups in the legs that can pull the BG right down (at least in my experience!). Sending you and your daughter all the very best and thank you so much for sharing this with us here!

Great video Andrea!! Reducing insulin before workouts is a great call :) ! I find that morning workouts with little insulin on board is the easiest for blood sugars, but then I quite often feel nauseous when I exercise in the morning so I end up just exercising in the evening anyways haha. I completely agree with you that every single workout is unique! There is a lot of troubleshooting involved and we are constantly learning. Take care Andrea 😘💖

Hi Andrea! It is very interesting to see how you manage basal and food before and during work outs. Thank you for sharing! I realized I reduce my basal rate approx 40 mins prior to work out or run to 20-50% of my basal rate depending on the type of activity. I also need to eat some quick carbs right before I start working out. I also do a small bolus right after I am done with the work out to avoid any blood suger spikes and to allow for a nice shower without the pump:) Have a nice weekend!

Even after almost 35 years it never ceases to amaze at how time and effort goes into insulin adjustments. If I turned off my basal I'd be well over 300 even with pure cardio. I usually try for fasted exercise as that seems the simplest to figure out. And usually with any type of strength training I need to have a bolus beforehand.

In the mornings it might not been insulin resistance, not sure if you’ve heard about Dawn Phenomenon? Also, because your exercising in a fasting state, and being on a pump (hope that’s right re the pump) the insulin is only acting as a basal and dealing with the normal sugar production from the liver. When you exercise the liver will produce more sugar as demanded by the muscles. If you don’t have enough insulin in your system to counteract that sugar then the glucose can’t get into the muscle cells. They send a message to the liver (glucagon) to produce even more sugar. This is why a small amount of rapid acting insulin before exercise especially if you’re in a fasted state can stop blood sugars spiraling up really high. That being said, a pump with cgm and in auto mode usually takes care of that, but diabetics like myself on mdi (multiple daily injections) have to learn from experience and calculate these things, esp when there’s no rapid acting insulin in the system, ie in the morning and only basal insulin like lantus working. It can be complicated to understand and it’s quite an in-depth discussion. Type 1 diabetes hey, nightmare 🤦🏻‍♂️

just a question why do you do Mg when in the UK :-) great video Id like to do one on cycling as I'm not housebound and the roads are empty and safer even in these Crono times, but I'm not a good presenter like yourself! I'm just keeping more local to the area! The only exercise really I do and the odd situps and pushups but never change insulin for them as they are not as active and as long as yours! . Thanks for your tips mine on cycling is no quick-acting at all and only 5u to 8u long-acting but when I had the 3 days on a pump I turned it off and managed off no background at all and bolused fast-acting 20min before a cafe stop If over 40m I use TorQ (www.torqfitness.co.uk/product/1-5kg-blackcurrant-energy)in one bottle of water and nothing in the other! works and helps a lot when you don't want to be eating. I also bolus after exercise to stop spikes and eat very low carb foods to fill me after exercise - things like Greek yoghurt with added nuts (Almond flakes Walnuts) in it and little bits of fruits like Blueberries, Strawberries, Blackberries sometimes I also add Alpro with coconut the yoghurt type to it! works great! just mix it all together. www.alpro.com/uk/ I have also used nakd once on a ride but find them to not have enough carbs for a cycle ride for me. I use if I can possiby, as they are expensive to use Jordans Frusli 21g or CranBerry & Pumpkin Seeds Bars from Tescos which are 20.3g t but you have to remember they can take 20mins to get into your system so if you know a hill is due you need to be ready for them :-) but you also have to remember to find snack bars that are easy to get into them as when cycling it can be hard trying to open them Thank you for your tips and time again, nice your are educating us all with your tips! Happy Diaversary Day too! I wish I know when mine was but no clue at all! :-( I think Diabetes UK are giving medals for T1s who have had it over 50 years but No PCS in them days with me or your dad and the paperwork on me is over 4 big folders full you need a trolly to carry just mine! :-) I don't think they can find when I got T1 as I keep asking them all I know is I was around 2 when I got it. Not sure if this might help you too on Coffee but I never get a raise from it but I have ground Coffee so not sure if that will help on the matter. Great news too on Dexcom for the back of the arm I tried it first time the other week and I was too :-) And 2 Gluco tabs now called (Lift) do it for me too also for low night hypos. www.liftglucose.com/lift-chewable-tablets/ With me and your tips it's Backward and Beyond :-) (I'm the backward one!) lol
