A type 1 sky crane helicopter is dropping water over the Cedar Creek Fire. This helicopter has an internal tank that can carry up to 2300 gallons of water but is currently carrying approximately 1800 gallons to maintain a two-hour turn around for fuel. Helicopters can hover and deliver water to specific points. When used in combination with firefighting on the ground, helicopters are a helpful tool because water drops can slow fire growth, while firefighters work on suppression tactics. Firefighters on the ground guide helicopters where water is needed and maintain constant communication to ensure water is delivered safely.
