The “Jesus Christ looks like me” line is an inside joke. Someone said to Peter in the street “you look like Jesus Christ” so he said to them “Jesus Christ looks like me”.
Yes! I want to tell that story every time I see someone get bent out of shape over that lyric. Very similar to the Beatles misunderstanding over a Jesus quote.
@@MainelyW212 90's Ironic comedy at its best. Like the song My Girfriends Girlfriend 25 years later still makes me laugh my ass off everytime I hear it.
Peter's entire musical career was sarcastically taking the piss. Like, Carnivore had songs on the same album that politically, philosophically, morality etc. wise took completely different stances. Even in the same songs he'd switch up the entire meaning of everything that came before it. He loved to rock everyone's boat in more ways than one, I guess is what I'm saying.
@5 stringin Yeah, but I don't think he actually did (not care). That was just an imae. He had deep rooted stage fright and would have preferred just writing songs in his cellar. And not because he didn't care.
"Don't mistake lack of talent for genius" was from Bloody Kisses, but the lesser known quote from the album is a lot longer: "This entire opus is respectfully dedicated to all those who have loved unconditionally only to have their hearts unaesthetically ripped out: Base not your joy on the deeds of others, for what is given can be taken away. No hope = no fear."
One of my favorite bands. They definitely grow on you. Silly, dark, heavy. I saw them live in Cincinnati. Before one song, Peter said, "This next song sounds like sh*t, because I was on the toilet when I wrote it." LOL.
@@typeonegative8726 I can't remember, no :) It was a Jagermeister event where a bunch of bands played in Cincinnati (Bogart's). Can't remember the song though. It was funny.
When did they do Love You To Death ? I missed that, thought they only did Black No. 1.. They should do Unsuccessfully Coping with the Natural Beauty of Infidelity
The whole point of this band was making music that would help get into the pants of hot goth chicks. By most accounts, the band succeeded in this lofty goal.
The whole point of the band was for Peter to finish his way too big of a contract he signed with Roadrunner that carried over from Carnivore, otherwise Peter would have kept working for the Park's Department.
In fairness to the late Peter Steele, he had a really deep voice naturally, so he probably wasn't trying to be campy or over the top gothy. It was just the way he sounded.
@@billsmith7642 both bands use electric piano/organ. Both encompass in their lyrics, their mystique and brand the subject of pain, death , love, sex. My two favorites! Peter was a foot taller. Both as big of rock sex gods as musician. Both got their kicks before the whole shit house goes up in flames. Burned out quickly and bright than as a lamb without a fight.💚🔥
"For her lust, she'll burn in hell, her soul done medium well" Best line in the song 🤘- I love this band so much, and it's awesome watching your reactions to them ❤️
I have to say, I absolutely love how completely open-minded and honest (without being insulting) you guys are when you are listening to something for the first time. I've noticed a lot of people comment on how it reminds them of watching a friend listen to something for the first time back in the 90's and they're right. Love it. Gonna keep right on watching you guys.
Peter Steele has an amazing voice. The way he sings is completely his stage persona. He was in life hilarious and self depreciating. As a woman I have always found him to be super sexy on stage and off. I can listen to him all day. Rolling Stone magazine once described Type O as the Beatles meets Black Sabbath. They are amazing! R.I.P. Peter.
My first show was Prong, Sepultura w/Max, and PanterA. Second show was Type, Sepultura/Max and Ozzy. Saw PanterA 3 times. Seen Max 7 times. Love Type O cuz it makes the girls wet 😛
@@mangala666 It wasn't a huge leap considering how much they were influenced by Black Sabbath and the Beatles. It was kinda like Goth Doom. They didn't go all Fields of the Nephilim or anything
I haven't even watched the first half, and I am cracking up at how uncomfortable this makes you guys! It might not be your cup of tea, but Type O Negative makes chicks hot.
Peter knew their music was cheesy and that was their schtick. I got to meet the band after a concert one night and they were not acting like Vamps just real people who laughed and joked. But as a little goth girl in her 20's Jeeyaysus! I am short so I came just up to his elbow! Their stage show was completely dark and sexy. Yes it was Vampire themed and so very gothic. While they took the performance seriously, they didn't take Goth lifestyle like something real. They just catered to masochism and the whole Vampire fetish. Not to mention that their music was original and literally imposed an emotion of just... Darkness. The videos were part of the flavor of the genre though that is how we saw them first and learned who they were and what their performance was about. It is VERY important to note they were doing a JOB that catered to horney little goths and they poked fun at that in every interview they did. And I was okay with that. *laugh* cause DAyum. He was so haWt.
they don't have a big doom boner. Think they should do anaesthesia, it's a great catchy tune to get into, will be an instant hit. also different from their more goofy stuff
Peter Steele's voice is large like everything else about him. He stood 6'8" WITHOUT HIS BOOTS, he was almost 7 feet tall with shoes lol! He would bring a bottle of red wine to the stage , he had stage fright, the wine helped him too chill, also you always knew when it was the last song , at the end of it Peter would pull all of his bass strings out because he didn't believe in Encores.
The band was tuned in what's called BEAD which as as low as the bass guitar will go without sounding like punching mud, while not throwing off musicians timing...
Type O Negative’s Red Water (Christmas mourning) is IMO one of the most heartfelt holiday songs (lyrically) I’ve heard in a minute. Please consider giving it a listen. It’s fitting, especially now.
The loss theme is always so present in their music, they can make heart wrenching songs like Red Water something you want to listen to over and over. Loss and pain hidden behind all that theatricality, it's really worth digging into.
Same. I seen them in 1996, Ybor City, Florida when they were promoting October Rust. It was an outside venue. GREAT concert. Pete was massive on stage even from a distance.
Watching you guys is like in the old days taking a new album to a friends house and playing it for them and just watching them loose their mind over it. You guys are great!!
"Everything Dies" - A very underrated Type-O song that may not get a lot of votes, but trust me, it slays. Also when are you going to give Porcupine Tree another chance? Have you even done "Trains" yet?
Everything Dies is one of my favorite Type O songs definitely underrated. It has a more commercial sound but the lyrics and the emotion Peter puts into them are deep.
Not to be a downer, but that album came out when my mother was terminally ill. I listened to it over and over in my car going to and from the hospital because it just felt like he was saying everything I needed to and didn't have the words for. And if that's not the definition of great song writing, I don't know what is.
As a Type O Negative fan, I totally understand why they're not everyone's cup of tea. They're very much a niche thing with a theatrical, carnival style aesthetic. The style is a nice change of pace in a genre that can often take itself too seriously and tends towards anger.
Also, as a fan of prog and technical stuff for decades, you guys aren't wrong about some of the fans in the scene. some people only care about technique as if it were a competition with no regard to composition of a song you can listen to. difficulty is a shibboleth to the fandom at times.
The Benson Hoist Lesbian Choir is just a joke...it's credit for themselves on backing vocals. Its a play on word of Bensonhurst is a place in Brooklyn but spelt as though how they'd pronounce it. Funniest shit.
Thank you all so much for the Type O love. One of my favorite bands of all time. PLEASE consider doing a video for Wolf Moon. One of my favorite transitions of ALL TIME. Keep up the great work. 🤘🏻😎
I was fortunate enough to spend a little time with Peter. He was one of the funniest dudes, and he talks very much like his singing voice(deep with a thick BK/ accent)
They used to play in Philly on Halloween. I got to see one of those shows. So damn good. At the end of one of the songs a friend of mine screamed out "Peter Steele's my Dad!"... Peter replied, "The hell I am."
Definetly cool band and singer. Verry smart funny and talented dude. HE never gave a shit and did what he loved and he did it well. One of the most recognisable sounds ever
This album was such a massive influence in my teens. Guess it must be quite difficult to fully get into this but in a period when goth clubbing was a thing we did it was epic
T-O-N is one of the most genuine, original and creative bands on this planet! Christian woman and october rust (full album) are true masterpieces on this planet! R.i.p. Peter 🙌🏻
Was thinking the same thing!!!! Be my druidess was a great song coming right after love you to death on the October rust album. First time hearing that bass line then the band kicking in I was in awe!!!!! Good choice!!!!
@@Torchbearer666 There was some overlap between the bands, I think it was a Type O drummer who went to join LoA, or maybe it was the other way around. Didn't know LoA were contributing to the choir, though.
@@thossi09 You're not wrong man. Sal, whose last record with TYpe O was BK, left after Peter broke up the band during this era. Once the record started flying off the shelves and getting great opening slots, Peter had no choice but to leave his job at the Parks Department and focus on the band full-on. At this point, Sal had already left and joined LOA and played on 5 of their 7 records. They contributed to the choir on this album and possibly others. The choir was usually miscellaneous friends that we're around at the time.
@@thossi09 My pleasure man! Another fun fact...the Christian Woman low budget video version that Type O made, the monks running in a circle in the vid are the guys from LOA hehe
Saw them in concert in 1993 or 1994 in a smaller arena in Montreal. For the whole show, the room was dark, with only green spot lights coming from behind them, moving slowly. They were never lighted from the front. Made for an eerie atmosphere during the show, and it was amazing.
Type o negative is one of those bands that sometimes I giggle at too, just because it’s campy at some parts. But usually 2 mins into the song I’m jamming. Really have to be in a certain mood to put it on.
It's a song like this that I swear the secret of time travel is hidden in songs like this because when I hear it, it literally takes me back to places and times in my life... like automatically...I can close my eyes and just be there
Type O Negative is a band I have come to appreciate more and more as I've grown older, they're theater kids who picked up instruments and they are acting and playing characters, and it's all wonderful. If I can make a suggestion from Machine Head: -Locust -Darkness Within
I love that you guys are giving Type O some love lately!! Peter Steele is so underrated, truly one of the greatest musicians and songwriters of our time, and the band as a whole is amazing!!
It's hard to listen to the song and watch the video for "Everything Dies" since Peter Steele died, but that's still one of my favorite Type O songs. RIP Peter
Josh Silver deserves a ton of credit for this song. He essentially creates that entire chorus and atmosphere therein on the keys. And I normally talk shit on keyboardists, but he’s an exception.
The heaviness with the melodic sound makes Type O Negative very unique. Peter's lyrics were awesome. Kenny's guitar work is great. Josh was great with mixing the songs. #TheDrabFour
Along those lines, if you haven't seen it - check out "Dark Horse in the style of Type O Negative". When I first saw it, it felt just a little bit like the guy who made it was channelling Pete.
@@goose5462 Of course Isis have better songs but Ghost Key is a great introduction song to Isis. Plus it has Adam Jones on guitar so it's the perfect bridge from a familiar sound (Tool) to a new sound.
Zeal & Ardor have dropped so much amazing music at this point. Try ‘Ship on Fire’ or maybe ‘Row row’. Or if you’re feeling up to it ‘Vigil’ is just emotionally so heavy.
This was the song that got me into Type O. Still remember exactly where I was when I heard that opening riff kick in. Still gives me goosebumps to this day. You guys should try something like "Embers Fire" or "Enchantment" by Paradise Lost sometime. Bet you'd love it!
They did a fake live album. It included people telling them they suck, sound issues, and a drunken rambling/ singing the wrong song. They got more serious in the last few albums. Songs like tod's ship gods, september sun and world coming down dealing with sadness and depression and even reflection on child hood. I really enjoy your approach to giving it all a chance!
I really love what you guys said in the middle of this video. I am a prog nerd and I love the crazy complex stuff that comes from that style of music. I also appreciate a lot of other styles of music and I also understand that things like music are a subjective thing. Something that I enjoy may not be for everyone else. I love your channel because no matter what you give your honest opinion about the songs you listen to. You always give every song and or band a fair chance. .
Such a joy watching you having great time with TON! And yes, the band used to implement dark humor and make fun, especially in their first 3 albums (this one's from the third). And I would really love to see you react on Life of Agony's "Through and Through" - same year, again Brooklyn, NY, same drummer as in TON and the guys from LoA are actually adding backing vocals in this very album of ToN. Salute!
I doubt they'd vibe with that song at all as it's very long and takes a good while to get going. One of their older tracks like Leave Me Here would be a better choice as in intro to CoL. Remember that you're a fan already, and the stuff you love about them may well be a big turn off for completely fresh ears.
Peter Steele had the most sex appeal of any singer. His voice is naturally melodic and entrancing. He played on that at times but he was one of the most gifted song writers and singers that ever lived. If you can't tell, this was, is, and always will be my favorite band of all time.
