When it comes to camping hammocks there are a lot of choices. But there are a few different types of hammocks to choose from as well.
The most common and basic is the gathered end hammock. search.yahoo.c...
Or some call it a channel end hammock depending on how it is whipped.
This video just takes a look at some of the ones I own and a bit of talk about them.

I love my gathered end hammock- a 12ft Green Bean Clone. Been using it for car camping, but, after I recuperate from knee replacement (6 weeks post op ) I'm gonna try my first solo, hopefully this year before winter ( my DIY quilt is only rated to about 30-- 40 degrees- not used it yet). Used the hammock on one trip this spring, was best sleep *ever*. Would pitch my bed if I could hang the hammock in my house. Please keep making videos, we'll keep watching! ATB!

Thank you so much for this video!! I have fought that ridge down the center for sometime. I just use the Equip single person hammock...I know it is a budget hammock, but, well it was my "first love" LOL. I have always laid in it straight and have found if I did not get the hang just right I had that ridge that KILLED my legs. I just went to the 2 person Equip about 2 weeks ago. Half the night I fought the ridge, finally got my first diagonal lay...LOVED it, slept great!! Thanks for the info on how to fight the ridge.

So the cool thing about Hammocks (and I still don't own one, but I will I swear!) is that the actual hammock is from what I have seen the cheapest part of the setup. Not a huge investment to find a hammock that you can be comfortable in. I see different sites all the time with Hammocks under 60 dollars, and from what I see, (and please correct me if I'm wrong so people don't go with bad information) the suspension (Hope i'm using the write term) that goes from the tree to click onto the hammock is pretty universal, so once you have that it's not like you have to keep spending money on that to change through hammocks. At least that's the way it appears. These videos are awesome, It's nice to see someone passionate about something they enjoy and willing to help inform people based on their own experience. Shug you're my hero. Btw, just out of curiosity, do you use a specific brand of Clubs? I used to use radical fish, but I've since changed to a more traditional style of club. (Sorry, off topic)
@shugemery
@shugemery 8 лет назад
True...you can get a fairly inexpensive hammock. The suspensions vary as some use just rope and heavy metal biners. Easy to upgrade suspension and look good doing it. Tree straps et al.

Loving my XLC but ordered a full length quilt from hammock gear since the yeti didn't keep them pesky skeeters off my legs. Got chewed up pretty good. Only thing I dislike so far is the zip is one way. I'd like to add another zip so I can place it in the center more for quickly grabbing things under me or re-arranging my underquilt. I think I could do it without losing the ability to unzip it all the way off.

I'm early! Yay! So, hopefully you'll see my question. big fan of your videos, this one is very informative, and I really liked the angle from above. It gives clear visual when you're explaining something. Anyway, here's my question: how long is your ridgeline in your green bean 2.0? I made a 345 cm hammock and I'm kind of worried that the sag will be too much for the upcoming fronkey bucket and the tarp. what's your experience with a dog bugnet
@shugemery
@shugemery 8 лет назад
It is 99 inches. Basic rule is 83% of length of hammock as a place to start. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xrfBrIEH2-U.html

Hello shug sir now i know you've done a ton of videos on underquilts and then there's the video top quilts vs sleeping bags and I know you usually mention what particular top quilt you're using at that given point in time in fact in one video I've watched more than once you mention the warbonnet mamba i think that's the name there is not a lot out there on that particular top quilt one that I've come across besides your video were it's mentioned so since you are the bench mark in which all others try to achieve when it comes to any and all things hammock backpacking would you consider making a video maybe a short series on top quilts if not I will continue to watch and enjoy the videos you do make "that's a purdy boil"

Hey, I have a guestion, White Noise! In really wet weather, do you stuff your hammock in a waterproof dry sack? I know to keep my down dry, but I've always wondered this about hammocks, inner tents and sleeping pads.

Hi there Shug, thanks for another great vid. Just curious what you think of a blue poly tarp gathered end hammock? I saw one in another vid, replicated it using stuff around the house (10x12 tarp, paracord, cam lock tensioners) and hung it using my vertical porch support beams and it seemed to be fine. I got in it(gently), the "hammock" and cordage seemed to support me pretty solidly, and I'm around 6'/280 lbs. Just curious about your thoughts since I'm considering using this setup, plus foam camp pad under me, TQ, and cover tarp on an overnighter in a wet, chilly (+7 degree Celcius) Canadian night this weekend and really hope I don't end up on the ground. Btw, finding suitable trees isn't a problem here lol.

Hi Shug! I have recently acquired a hammock for free and want to use it on a backpacking trip. It's only about 8'10" long and 4'7" wife. I'm worried it might be a bit short after seeing how big most hammocks are. I'm a average size guy about 6'. Do you think it will work if I give it a lot of sag to max out my diagonal lay?

Would something like the greylock 3 or 4 from jacksrbetter work ok on the blackbird xlc double layer 1.7? My situation is that I have a cheap single layer hammock now and would like an UQ to use with it this fall/winter, but I know eventually I want to get the xlc. Way down the road I would probably get the wooki UQ for it, but I just can't afford what I want right now. So, in long, again, would the greylock work on the xlc till I can afford the wooki?

with a gathered end hammock, what is the difference between an asym lay: left versus an asym lay: right? I have a HH Expedition Asym Zip that appears like it would be a asym lay: right by the position of the side pullouts. I'm an old geezer but new to modern hammock camping & have seen videos with different diagonal alignment positions. Is there a "correct" way to align oneself on the diagonal in reference to the pullout points with this hammock? thanks for reading this.

Not heard from them. Reviews take some thought and time and often the one sending product has stipulations. I turn down many of them as I am advertising for them and don't always want to take it on. There is some pressure and expectation on that end.

Unlike most educational videos, which are serious, your videos are very enjoyable to watch. So, thanks for creating this video series. I now have two questions. 1. What about using a sleeping bag in a hammock when it's cooler out? I've been told you can do it. 2. What about the ENO hammock systems, especially those that have the mosquito netting and tarp? I'm considering getting one. Maybe ENO will send you one for free that you could demo and educate viewers with.
@shugemery
@shugemery 8 лет назад
You can use a sleeping bag but some insulation under you is needed for most folks. The down gets compressed and losses a lot of its heat holding abilities. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yFWs6UH7C74.html Enos are just fine.

thanx for the Vid Shug; I use the 'Tenth Wonder' Hammock over here in the UK - Mosquito net and double layer built-in.Been using it for for years. *uses two small bars at each end to spread the net.

You could use that 2QZQ UQ protector on my that single layer if the bugs are biting through. Keeps from using a UQ or getting a double layer. Another option. See Shug, we do listen and learn. Great video.

Just think...for that 3 night Hilton stay, you could have acquired a quality hammock, suspension system, and 0:degree top and Under Quilts. That’s why they make chocolate and vanilla, I guess. HYOH.

Oh, and since I probably never said it before, I and hundreds (or maybe dozens.....) of hammockers, campers, hikers, and wanna-be all the priviouslies, owe you a big round of thanks for all the effort, enthusiasm, spam, break-fasts in the hammocks you have filmed for us over the years. You are humble, funny, and always so full of cheer one can't help but be infected (and probably die from) and it is one fine infection if I may say! THANKS Shug for all the laughs. Be well my friend!
