The three most common types of spillway gates are:
1️⃣Crest gates, which are designed to regulate the water level by being lifted up or lowered down. This is done by sliding the gate vertically on a set of guides to either increase or decrease the flow rate.
2️⃣Tainter gates, which are hinged at the top and swing open like a door to let water flow through. These gates can be operated remotely and can also be used to divert water to different areas.
3️⃣Bear trap gates, which are used to control the flow of water and protect downstream areas during floods. They work by using the force of the water to close a large gate and trap the water behind it, preventing further flooding.
🛠️When it comes to maintenance, spillway gates are typically repaired using stoplogs. These are large wooden or steel beams that can be inserted into slots in the gate structure to create a temporary barrier. Once the stoplogs are in place, water can be drained from behind the gate for inspection, repair or replacement.
Spillway gates are critical infrastructure that help protect our communities and infrastructure from flooding. Understanding their design and maintenance is important for anyone working in water management or civil engineering.
