I really appreciate you taking the time to explain how this works. I bought an Erika Number 5 a couple weeks ago and fixed the draw band with your video. It works like a charm. Thank you from Argentina!

Great video, thanks for sharing. I was unsure how long to make the new draw band so I went with about 4 inches longer than the width of the typewriter. The length worked fine. I used clear 30 lb monofilament leader line.

Thanks so much for this video. I just picked up a vintage Model 5 Remington with a broken draw band. I understand the repair. (Thanks to you). I'm just hoping my Remington typewriter has the same drawband system.

Really great video Thanks for taking the time to make sure camera was focused and in view when working from different angles. Audio was also excellent. I had fixed a drawband before but didn't know that the spring retracts and makes room for the knot...very interesting. Just picked up a QWERTY Erika and it's cosmetically great, mechanically in need of just a few things. Excited to get it running 100%

Watching this I thought draw band might be my prob but now I don't think so. Tension on spring and I can feel the band. 1917 lc smith - carriage returns and stays in place but won't ratchet forward with space bar or keys. Have to release carriage for it to move. Ideas?

Thank you thank you!! I was searching for some hours before finally finding this video. My Adler Tippa 2 has the spring rotating horizontally, but otherwise this seems to be the same mechanism idea. Can't wait to get in there now and try this. The things unclear from the video are how the magic string length is determined (but mine is unbroken so I'm good), how many rotations to start with on the spring (I assume I'll know if the string doesn't reach it was too tight, and I suppose too loose is fixed through trial and error?), and can it be adjusted after assembly without starting over? Now I must order or fashion a spring hook!
@phoenixtypewriter2136
@phoenixtypewriter2136 4 года назад
Glad you have made progress, I don't recall how the Tippa mainspring is set up, I don't have one to reference either. Amount of winds is unknown, like you said, trial/error - fabricating parts is sometimes only way

I have sometimes wondered if I would ever ask that age old question "how long is a bit of string ?" for all these years no one really knew so my typewriter has sat collecting dust along with the pens that have no ink. Now I discovered Phoenixtypewriter to hopefully solve the problem but after watching, the answer seems to be just a bit more than you think.

Thank you for your really generously informative and helpful videos. With your help I just got an old Halda 6k from 1956 up and running. The carriage strap was broken when I got it, but I found a ribbon among my things that worked as a replacement. Tightening the main spring and then putting on the strap almost gave me a nervous breakdown, but boy was I happy when I managed to get the thing working again.

@phoenixtypewriter2136
@phoenixtypewriter2136 7 лет назад
I don't have a video because the SCM escapement is so reliable & I can't remember the last time I have seen one broken. What's not working ? did it get damaged in shipping ? Picture or video would help. Could also post it on the FB Typewriter maintenance group site for worldwide help. They also have repair books & parts layout diagrams.

@phoenixtypewriter2136
@phoenixtypewriter2136 7 лет назад
Yes
@phoenixtypewriter2136
@phoenixtypewriter2136 7 лет назад
Yes, tighten spring, adjusted hammers (lever) contact point on bell, make sure hammer does not touch bell in rest position. Trial & error but usually with some time, tools & patience you can make these ring louder.

Thanks for posting this..I left my antique Remington Noiseless with a repair guy for a year and it came back worse....the draw band had broken ..it's a slightly different set up (I just hook one end round a "spike" on the spring) but it seems to work perfectly..thank you again...made my day.
@johnyoung4747

Is the knot required to be inside the spring drum to fix the spring end in position? My 1939 QDL's spring seems to be sliding inside the drum after two turns or so, and it only build up enough tension to move the carriage about halfway.
@phoenixtypewriter2136
@phoenixtypewriter2136 6 лет назад
Sounds like the actual spring inside has broken, you most likely will have to find one from another Royal.
@Musique3579
@Musique3579 4 года назад
Wow, are you ever lucky. I must have an older one than yours and it is hardly as easy to do as this..........as if this was not hard enough. Mine has a different kind of set-up and is very *fixer unfriendly.* Trouble is, wind the string to strong tension and attach over a pulley and get the string to the screw that un-tightens via a different diabolical way then you have. And then, it unwinds all by itself! Maddening!!! One more try and it hits the trash!
@phoenixtypewriter2136
@phoenixtypewriter2136 4 года назад
Wonder if your mainspring is broken internally, if so, it will wind tight , then suddenly slip loose in tension

@@phoenixtypewriter2136 Thanks so much for the reply. Appreciated! The spring is fine, and, I am also a clock repair person who knows springs well. Think I found it. I was using a 25lb Fish Line. (Must not grab. Too slick.) Now to locate string like the old one that was in it that does not slip as the pulley goes back. Supplies in my area are just so darn limited. Even Ace. Maddening. Thanks ever so much again. :-)

I had the old one seen here @ 9:03 , but you could just do a rough estimate, you can always go a little longer, plenty of room on this particular mainspring.

I tried doing this on a 1930s zephyr but failed. I tried about 8 times, rotating the coil an additional rotation every time hoping the hole would open up to slip the knot it... but it never did... could it be that the coil is broken?

Anyone know what would cause the carriage to seize up completely? literally hold down the release lever and whack it to move.
@phoenixtypewriter2136
@phoenixtypewriter2136 7 лет назад
The quick answer is No, I don't know, don't have enough information. Did it ever work ? Did you acquire it like this ? Was it shipped ? does carriage wiggle at all ? does it bind evenly all the way across ? is there sign of rust or corrosion ? Does the escapement work ?
@dosvaskosfarms2985
@dosvaskosfarms2985 7 лет назад
She is a 1935 L.C. Smith and the Escapement does not work. If I hold the cartridge release and whack it with the palm of my hand I can get it to move. I see no rust and zero wiggle. I did purchase in this condition as it was in fantastic condition and a good price and figured I could part out for another project if I could not get her up and running. I just hate to do that because of the overall pristine condition and would like to restore and use it.
