Typhoon Noru: Five dead in Philippines - BBC News 

I've been living in the Philippines for nearly 15-years. This super-typhoon passed north of us. Winds were high by 12am local time, with powerful lashing rain. By 3.30am my house was flooded ankle deep with muddy water. The whole community had a sleepless night. Thankfully this typhoon was fast-moving, which limited the amount of rain it had time to dump upon the province. Slow moving typhoons cause the most profound flooding. Whilst the Philippines is very familiar with extreme weather - many here, especially the elderly, remark upon how the frequency of truly devastating storms is accelerating in frequency. The predictable patterns of monsoon and dry season also seem to be becoming more irregular. With less than two decades living here, even I can witness changing weather patterns; including the sea temperatures (I'm a professional diver).

The Philippine sea effect is definitely a thing ,warm water causes Tropical depressions to blow up into Typhoons & super typhoons very quickly. The same thing happened with ST Odette when it hit here in Cebu last December that blew up within 12 hrs and hit the island and took a good 6 months to get back to some sort of normalcy. Thoughts and prayers to our friends in Luzon .

Condolences to those who lost their lives during that day; what's worse is that in Nueva Ecija, other than flooding as well, my Tito (or Uncle) Leslie was stranded there all alone without power in my Lolo's old house (since that's his province), the lights there went out, and the wind literally ripped off the roof of that house with a lot of water gushing in all night long! The next day, a lot of debris was found everywhere, and it was pure destruction in the whole of Nueva Ecija with a lot of power lines toppled over. I can say Philippines are pretty well equipped with only 5 deaths (the rescuers) even though the super typhoon is 500 km/h. In the calamities of every year Philippines may it be super typhoon or earthquakes- they have 0 to few deaths. Every year Philippines encounter 40 typhoons and 3-5 super typhoons. Only few come out in the news. Every month there is an earthquake. But these people were able to manage.
