Jonathan Schrantz continues his new series of lessons primarily for beginner chess players focused on teaching all of the fundamental checkmating patterns and beginner chess tactics.
The forth part of the series covers Boden's Mate (a two bishop checkmate in which the bishops crisscross to cover all of the flight squares of the opposing king) and contains progressively more difficult tactical puzzles.

Zolpi, your instructive videos on this RU-vid channel are absolutely lovely. Never change. You are 100% one of the absolute nicest chess teachers. The last example was fantastic. And your expression made me laugh with joy. Thank you so much.

I like that you don't just show the basic mating pattern, but explain how to achieve it and then go into sample games where we see it implemented and you challenge us to find our way to it. Beginners often don't understand Queen sacrifices in games they study moves of...even in this case where it leads to mate...so it's good to remind them they can part with their Queen if the opponent leaves their King in mate. I also like that you emphasize the Queen sacrifice doesn't need to be a capture. Beginners often don't understand the idea of "key squares". They're looking for captures on, and defenses of, occupied squares. I love your content and always look forward to viewing more.

16:11 The nice thing about takes on b4 is that the black Queen got no square on the a file, so mate is inevitable XD

I've had a Boden's mate in a game and it feels NICE being able to pull it off. This video made a few things clearer for me. Now I'm heading to chess.com live games to seek out some Boden's mates! Thanks! :)

I did win with a Boden’s Mate against my father-in-law, following a sacrifice (I can’t remember what piece). It was so exciting that I lost my ability to be a humble winner.

14:32 what if black plays Ne7 instead of Be7 at first. Then the bishop defends the f6 square (after Rxe7 Bxe7) . What is shown is mate in 4. Can someone show the mate in 6?
@benextinction__144
@benextinction__144 4 года назад
If Ne7, you can just take the bishop with yours (Bxg7) and you're threatening M1. Only defence seems to then be Qd8. You then play Bxe7, queen is forced to recapture, then Qxd7 as rook supports and that is mate I believe. So 1.Ne7, Bxg5 2. Qd1, Bxe7 3. Qxe7, Qxe7# I may be wrong but this was the calculation in my head and hopefully it helps

For the last game, what if black queen doesn't take the 2nd rook but moves back to help with defense? Oh Osama Sabasoub answered my question, the black queen has no safe squares to retreat too.

@8:00 how black gets checkmated from f6?
@benextinction__144
@benextinction__144 4 года назад
The threat of F6 is that after gxf6, Bh6 would me checkmate, so the pawn cannot be captured, which puts you in a very dangerous position. I hope this helps
