I’m Japanese and was one of those who were told to say I’M FINE THANK YOU, but still have no idea why they let us to do that... (and I have no idea if my English is okay...)
Wow. Fantastic video! You seem like such a seasoned teacher and your enthusiasm and passion seems very genuine. I'll be moving to Japan this summer to look for work and I hope to have a fraction of your skills. Instant subscribe.
Thanks for sharing this. Very helpful to know what other teachers do. Teaching elementary students English is tough. You seem to be doing a good job sensai !
thank you for this! i currently work with early learners and am applying for the 2020 jet program. apps are opening soon! your video makes me so excited!
Hey, this video is so helpful! :) It's great to have the visuals of the classroom and you walked through the lesson plan so clearly. I'm a new ALT in 4 elementary schools but I'm a little nervous because I've never taught kids before. This video makes me feel more prepared, so thank you!
I am glad you found this helpful, it was so hard for me to start this job with no real visual idea of what I was gonna be doing. So I am glad this video was able to help other people
+Philosoflix it's going good, thanks :) The fact that we do the same games over and over (eg. keyword game, missing game) made it easy to get into the swing of things. Now I'm just waiting for my kids to stop running away in a panic if I say anything in English other than hello/see you to them hahaha They're already getting used to me though :)
+Christie-Anne Dear thats great news! good to hear it! it gets really fun when you become more comfortable with the basics. you can eventually add and experiment with new ideas
I love this! I just started teaching at a nursery and I'm still feeling nervous since the children don't understand english yet. I'm currently starting on colors and it's so difficult. ♡
I worked for a few months at an afterschool English daycare type place in Japan and all of this is basically the same, except we would end up spending the first hour ant the part and the second hour actually try to do some worksheet or something haha. I'm a bit relieved to know that it is the same Q&A format. Thanks for the video!
+JuiceMyRandomness Thanks dude! This is 1 out of the 3 schools I teach at, it is pretty normal to teach at more than one school. If there is anything you want me to talk about related to teaching, I would totally do that. I can also show you more insightful differences between American and Japanese schools in general which I was already planning to do hahahahahaha
Hello Mick I saw this video today. It is really happy to see this video because It reminds me our good old days in Hajika. Hope to see you again in Japan 👋
@@MeryKeit Hey, thanks for your question! The short answer is that it's.....ok. It was pretty naive to assume that I could be happy in such a job. My comment says more of how crappy my situation was when I wrote it than how appealing doing the work in the video looks.
Dear Mars, Nothing worth fighting for if it wasn't for your Kids. Give your child a BRIGHT future by teaching him/her to read in early age in a very efficient scientific way using one of those guaranteed exclusive reading programs because Kids Channels on RU-vid since 2007 are only presenting sight words. You won't loose anything. This video is much help, thank you! Some questions, how long do you have to stay at school for the day? When do you have to arrive at school and when do you get to leave?
Hello, I am currently researching schools and teaching positions in Japan...I was curious about the ALT vs Teacher positions.. have you held both and what is your view of them? Thank you for posting! Hope all is well!
It was very nice, I have a request, I,m working for residential boarders. How to keep them engaged in their study at a time 6 to 7 section s in one room.
+T. Naka Thanks for your interest in my work! I am glad you watch my broadcasts haha, yea this is 1 of 3 schools I work at. I might make a video for each school.
You mentioned some students would be able to read the question on the board and some wouldn't unless they were older. Do you repeat the same lesson plan multiple times a day for each class that comes in? Or does the lesson change depending on the class grade? For example if you did this exact lesson for the day, would you do it pretty much exactly the same way 6-7 times during the day regardless of if the current class is 1st grader or 6th grade? Also thanks for the video!
Volaju16 hey, great question. To clarify, each grade level(1st to 6th grade) will.have their own different lesson each week, seperate from the other grades. Also even if you teach at more than one school, all 4th graders will learn that weeks lesson for 4th grade and etc. example: this week all 4th graders in all the schools learn "i like apples" 5th graders across all schools are doing "do you play soccer?" and so on. (HOWEVER) teaching the same lesson isnt a problem I do it all the time. When you get a lesson plan I guarantee you will find a lesson that makes no sense to teach. I make up lessons or teach a lesson from a different grade. no problem. just make your games fun and make sure kids have fun. lol
Also some kids went to international kindergartens or take supplemental classes after school so they'll be able to read more so than those who can't. Currently an English teacher so an international kindergarten in kansai.
Thank you for the wonderful video! I did my TESOL so I understand how a lesson is structured, but I have no teaching experience at all. I'm very nervous at how to go about it because I'm not sure if I really know how to "teach". I'm quite scared that I will get the impromptu lesson question during my JET interview in a bit over a week.... I don't really know how to go about it.
Vivian Lam usually the impromtu lesson will be a short demo of how you would introduce the new words. They will most likely look for energy, clarity and loudness in your voice, how well and simple you introduce new words and sentences, as well as maybe what kinda game you would use but most likely not
Where do you get all of the resources for the lesson? Do you personally use the computer at the school and print them out? Or do you have to use your own computer and printer? Or are these resources already provided?
I'm 13 when I finish college I'm gonna get my bachelor's degree and go work for aeon where you teach Japananese kids english when you said 40 kids I freaked out like
I have so many questions. Does the school provide you with the materials such as chalk, printer, paper, lamination? I see you have the dates and days of the week up? You also have some cute pictures. Did you print those? Where did you find them? The CD for the songs -- did you purchase this? If so, where?
Hi! this video is absolutely helpful! Did you print and laminate the cards at school? Were the rest of the visual aids in the video provided by the school or did you make them all yourself? :O
Hey Ellie thanks for commenting! The stuff here was made at school before I started working but is easily something you can make at school. Generally you should be allowed to laninate and print using school resources.
Hi Mike sensei! Your video was really helpful and I really loved it. By the way, what is your nationality? Your English is perfect. I too wanted to be an ALT teacher in Japan because I wanted to live there. LOL. I've been there twice as a tourist, and I just love everything there. I will be coming back this Autumn of 2017 for another vacation. What I really wanted to know is, if it was indeed true that the pre-requisite for ALT teachers for hire in Japan is that English should be the native language. I am an Asian, English is my second language, but I can speak fluently. If my case is possible, then I would really want to shift careers. Hahaha. Best of luck to you all the time. Have a great day!
Carlvin Ganados The requirements are to be a native level speaker, though you dont need to necessarily be a native. Also, an ALT is usually a stepoing stone position thqt helps you get further and onto better jobs. However the wage is really low, and not consistent, except with the Altia company. Hope this helped
It’s same method like in china I taught English in china for 5 years! Kids are so cute especially kindergarten but tiring 😁 God blessed teachers in the world 🌎

A MG budget issues. Schools have like no funding for anythinggg its why you see such old equipment. An ALT is usually shared to many schools for that reason. Some ALTs can be sent to over 10 schools
I personally prefer chalk over whiteboard. The dark green background with bright script is far less irritating to look at after a long day than the shiny bright background with the dark script. Also, whiteboard markers kind of stink.
i wonder if they go over grammar at all for explanation. like, you can drill as many vocab words into a kid as you want "sunny" and "cold" are easy ones. if you dont explain what "and" is then they will never learn that kneesandtoes is not a body part. ppl need to give children more credit to understanding grammar ya know? like "英語で、「と」は「and」です。" most kids would get something basic like that, and then even if its harder and they dont get the explanation the first time then drilling that every time would help too. vocab and grammar are both necessary to understand a language. i assume you do that too though! just sharing my thoughts about teaching
I like you dude!! You are so funny " You said you were fine you lying piece of '....'' LOL!! So funny!!!! Definately would like to know some of your other ideas. My I request your help as I will be teaching kindergarten. Thank You
