@@thedave7760 I doubt if your 138 was a fluke. I did a number of tests 15 years or so ago, to find out if it was worth taking the Mensa exam, and my results, over a period of several months, came out in a narrowish band between 138 and 142.

How about this for a hypothesis, Dominic? There has always been a midwit class, but apart from continually increasing in numbers, they were pretty much unable to have much of an influence on developments in the social framework. Then along came technology. Over a fairly short space of time, the midwit became able to influence the social world at 10 times the level that he'd been able to at the start of his career. And so, from being just something to be evaded and by-passed, the midwits came to the attention of the Dark Triad class as a threat that they could no longer easily or cheaply neutralise. So the Predatory Class coalesced around the solution of quietly, subliminally and unobtrusively enticing in the midwit class to be the Dark Triads' allies - a sort of Secret Army, so to speak, only with the secrecy comprising not only the hoodwinking of the general public, but also the hoodwinking of the midwit class itself.
Thomas Sowell talks of The Anointed. These are actually self anointed and often are good in one sphere but assume this endorses their ability to decide what those they consider less intelligent should think. These are not even the mid wits but the mid wits love them. Personally I think creativity is under appreciated and subordinated to so call intelligence. The creative person is actually less certain, more experimental and more open minded. Neither the anointed nor the mid wits realize that for all their intelligence given enough time, almost all thinking will be proven to lack nuance or simply be later proven wrong by new evidence. They are simply fixated on their own narcissistic self image.
I would argue that creativity is a property of intellectant in of itself though there are many forms of intelligence. However for overall general intelligence creativity is very useful and being deeply creative is often a very rare trait perhaps even more so than analytical intelligence. I would go as far to argue that the main thing that allowed society to evolve is those who were creative enough to conceptualize the technology and strategize to bend the natural world around them above all else.
tbf that study was all abt testing how proficient people thought they were at a task. There was another study that acc did what people thought dunning-kruger did, but i forgot the name. Saw it on some veritasium video lol

"Tyranny of the Midwits" -- perfect phrase! Incidentally, the IQ spectrum can be split very neatly into three equal parts, thus: 1: below 90, 2: between 90 & 110, and 3: above 110, though I think midwittery starts when IQ falls below 120, IMHO.
@@abatesnz You might think so, but IQ scores usually go up to 160 points, so even though 120 is respectable, in certain professions and academic settings, it's unimpressive.
@@73elephants I think you missed my point, that the OP was focused on the 90 and 110 thresholds, so the cut off for midwitery ought to align. I think there are higher IQs than 160 BTW. Just look how quickly Saddam's sons completed their PhDs in engineering, endorsed by 99% of those on the University's Court of Convocation. May I ask where you got those thresholds from? They seem to imply 1 SD of IQ is about 23.25.
Killer term "midwits". I first encountered midwits in the 70s after graduating in English Lit in the mid 60s. The 'new thing' was postmodernism and the material I encountered coming out of US academia was shockingly bad. I could read a sentence or two and know exactly what the author's conclusions were. Yet everyone was praising their intellectual prowess. That's when I began to dawn on me that I probably had a quite good second rate mind. Because it was unavoidable that these people had fourth or fifth rate minds. I've learned to recognize third rate minds - agree with them or not I can take them seriously. They have some nous. Midwts have little or none - to be kind. And to be unkind , a good dog or horse has nous. For example, a good dog will bite the burglar in the backside and not you. And a good horse will take you home if you let go the reins and stop being a midwit. Thanks - great post.

At time 4.16 I thought you were about to talk about me. Last night I ran out of tonic for my gin and couldnt be bothered to get ready to go out and buy replacements SO.... added a little regae regae sauce, then as it was too strong add more gin and some non alcoholic ginger beer. The WAIS, the most frequently used IQ test for adults in the western world uses: 80-90 low average. 90-110 average, 110-120 high average. So the ‘broad average’ range is between 80 and 120 (accounting for roughly 80% of the population).
I'm a mid wit but I have the good sense to hate bureaucracy know my intellectual limitations and doubt what I think I know and believe, and above all recognize the differences between morality and ethics
Fully agree with your view of society, BUT I just wish I could share your optimism with regard to the new monarch. He's as thick as theives with the new WEF "world order", he agrees to support their ongoing global takeover, and they agree to keep our failing monarchy in position, their useful idiot to keep the sleepwalkers deluded that its "business as usual". A midwit does not have an IQ score of 85-115. It's a term reserved for people who are above average but unremarkable. That range is 105-120. Otherwise, a great summary!
On the normal IQ basis, the mean is 100 and the standard deviation 15, so 85 to 115 is the entire population within 1 SD of the mean. That means, if IQ is normally distributed (which it isn't .... quite, but near enough), that 68% of the whole population will be within this cohort. 136 is way up there. MENSA accepts people in the top 2%, and I think I'm right in saying that 132+ is required for this.
Whoops - should have watched it all the way through before commenting, but your first 2 minutes suggested that you didn't know anything about it, when you really knew that 85-115 was the 1 SD band either side of the mean, and that 136 was something pretty rare. Maybe I'd better not move on to something about Dunning-Kruger until I see whether you bring this up a bit later on.
I’m not sure this is an intelligence matter. How do the civil servants of today compare to those of 1939/40/41/42 ? Those folks turned a peacetime economy into a war economy of huge scale, more planes, ships, aircraft in very short time. We’re civil servants then brighter than today? I don’t know, but the comparison is worth making.
