Tyseley Locomotive Works is the home to Vintage Trains who run express steam trains across the UK rail network.
It is one of the original top 50 rail depots in U.K. and the only one left still working. It opened in 1908 and has had a working steam loco on site every day since then.
In 1956 they started preserving locomotives and in 1964 they purchased their own locos. It has an award winning workshop preserving the skills associated with the steam rail industry and includes 5-6 people under 40 working there.
Over the years they have rebuilt:
Rood Aston Hall (2 cylinder)
Earl of Mount Edgcumbe
Clun Castle £950k restoration
3 GWR 460s
Twin panniers
They also laid the frames of Tornado before it went up North to be finished.

I'm always amazed by how great builders they where back when they used rivets and plates. I gives character. Machines and engines lack that nowadays. It's a shame. Thank you for the footage and love your channel.

Great tour of Tyseley. I've visited there on and off for over 40 years and volunteered there for a number of years before moving away. Many many hours spent cleaning muck off items before priming them ready for final painting. One fond memory is of spending an evening sat on top of 7029 Clun Castle's boiler with a tin of Brasso and a cloth, polishing the copper chimney cap! Much has changed over those years from when it was known as Birmingham Railway Museum, but what hasn't changed is the dedication of everyone involved, with first class engineering work going on (6229 Duchess of Hamilton's streamline casing, for example) and a fleet of brilliant, reliable locks.

Nothing compares with live steam. I have very fond memories of the Golden Arrow roaring past my house, when I was a boy. Stations like Charing Cross and Paddington were magic. In addition to rail, some traction engines were still in use, the local brewery - Fremlins - had both a steam lorry and horse and dray, and the winding room at a local colliery was awe-inspiring. These days I am relegated to a Mamod model steam car and a Hornby model rail layout. Thanks for the video.

Gerry, it's great to relive those days in model form but nothing beats the real thing! I was brought up visiting steam railways but unfortunately my mainline memories are blue and white slam door DMUs!

Indeed. Nothing beats the real thing, but opportunities are rare these days. I was lucky to grow up when I did - 1940s-50s. Cheers.

Smashing wee video really enjoyed that, great pics, good pace, half decent music and well worth the watch. Not long discovered your channel after taking an interest in returning to a bit of railway modelling, I've mostly been doing 1/35 armour for years, but I'm enjoying your stuff 🙂

WOW Kathy, that model of a rail yard looks so realistic and some of the figures even move, well done...... LOL. Looks like you had a really great day out, so much to see and do. It's a great opportunity to get some great close ups of so many things that you could use in your layout. Many thanks for sharing your time spent at the Tyseley Locomotive Works. Hope you had lots of fun, Joe

This is beautiful. I personally like American trains, but nothing can beat the UK’s sense of beauty and color choices. Here in the US, most locomotives nowadays are big dark and usually not kept in good shape. I really need to visit the UK.

Wow,now there's a real challenge to model. And you know that it's a real repair depot, because the even clean the back of the wheels for the pickups! 😀 They have a few lifetime's renovation there, and must have to pull themselves away at the end of the day. Did I see a sleeping bag in the loco at the beginning? Too literally "come home to a real fire" or even "an Englishman's home is his castle"? 🤣 Seriously, project planning the resources for that lot must be a nightmare. And everything is valuable (or useful, like that self-draining wheelbarrow) I'm lucky enough to live near Buckfastleigh, so wheelsets are common enough there, and most preservation railways have something being refurbished, so modelling a rebuild such as these expands the scope of what can be run, even without using Rule 1. Excellent visit, and a good day for the weather. Nice one!
@KathyMillatt
@KathyMillatt 7 лет назад
+Tom Lawton Thanks Tom. Yes, it's an expensive business. They were quoting £90,000 just to redo a tender. I do love the wheel sets on the side, in fact, I do love most junk on the side!

Cool historical railfanning, Kathy! I'm curious, how did you get bitten by the railroad bug? In other words, to what do you trace the origins of your love for all things trains? As a fellow model railroader, I fully and intimately understand this passion. Some may even call it an obsession. We call it our hobby or pastime. But it's much more than this. No matter what we call it, it remains steadfast in our hearts, ever ready to motivate us in the pursuit of its perfection and appreciation. It holds the power to captivate, fascinate and inspire us. We have been bitten by the railroad bug--no question about it. -from Tom Pilling

Tom, I blame my Dad as he was and is into trains. We went on steam railways etc as a family for trips out. I had his old Hornby Dublo set as a child. Even though I dropped modelling for a few years, we still went to preserved railways for days out plus I regularly catch normal trains still.
@ATSFVentaSpurNscaler
@ATSFVentaSpurNscaler 7 лет назад
Yes, Kathy, I relate well to your story. I enjoyed watching real trains as a young lad. But it was my dad who got me hooked on model trains when he gave me a Bachmann N scale trainset for Christmas 1969. I was 9 years old then. Dad died 7 days later. But the seed he planted inside me sprouted and flourished into a lifelong love of trains and N scale model railroading.

+John Carr I don't disagree. There's always a problem on a windy day with loads of hiss and there's a lot of photos with no sound. Ultimately, disjointed conversations and then silence just sounded odd.

John Carr I'd have to respectfully disagree with John. I like the music. It ties the mix of still photos and videos together well.
