Lyrics:
Tzena, Tzena, Tzena, Tzena
Can't you hear the music playing
In the city square
Tzena, Tzena, Tzena, Tzena
Come where all our friends will find us
With the dancers there
Tzena, Tzena join the celebration
There'll be people there from every nation
Dawn will find us laughing in the sunlight
Dancing in the city square
Tzena, Tzena, come and dance the Hora
One, two, three, four
All the boys will envy me for
Tzena, Tzena, when the band is playing
My heart's saying
Tzena, Tzena, Tzena
(translitteration)
Tzena, tzena, tzena, tzena ha-banot u-rena ħayalim ba-mosheva
Al na, Al na, Al na, al na titħabena Mi ben ħayil, ish tzava.
(translation:Go out, go out, go out girls and see Soldiers in the moshava (a settlement).
Do not, do not, do not hide yourself away from a virtuous man (a soldier), an army man.)
Tzena, Tzena join the celebration
There'll be people there from every nation
Dawn will find us laughing in the sunlight
Dancing in the city square
Tzena, Tzena...

I was born in 1948. I am not Jewish but I learned this tune from the radio, I used to sing myself to sleep with it. My parents said , I would announce each song that I would sing and sing until I fell asleep. This song was my favorite. My mother said that she would laugh to herself as it got more faint, at each singing, until I nodded off. Thank you for bringing back a wonderful piece of music and a part of my personal heritage. "Now...I am going to sing.. Tzena, Tzena, again. Thank you!!!

Using the same tune we sing in church, "I will sing unto the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously", based on Exodus 15:1-2.

As a Jew, it gladdens me to no end that they included the original Hebrew lyrics in this performance.

@@barbaramalkowicz2466 Original Hebrew: Tzena, tzena, tzena, tzena ha-banot u-r’ena chayalim ba-mosheva/ Al na, Al na, Al na, Al na, al na titchab’ena Mi-ben chayil, ish tzava English translation: Go out, go out, go out girls and see soldiers in the moshava (farming community). this was in 1950's, when the Jewish population was recovering and the USA was helping the Jewish population get back on their feet.... to steal this from the Jewish right after a horrible war would be a crime in itself, so yes they included it in the song out of respect because back in 1950's it was still in their minds of what wrongs have happened to the people.

My late, beloved parents, both of whom were survivors of the Holocaust atrocities met each other in the Weilheim DP camp after liberation. They fell in love, traveled extensively throughout Europe en route to the British mandated and controlled region most people today know as the Palestinian region. My father became affiliated with the Israeli Irgun, a Zionist paramilitary organization, eventually served in the Israeli Army and fought for the State of Israel's Independence in 1948, just three-years after being liberated from Buchenwald. Fast-forward, in 1960 my parents immigrated to the USA and I was born in late 1961. I still remember my parents playing and dancing to "Tzena, Tzena, Tzena" from my very early childhood. GREAT, WONDERFUL Memories.

It was 1948. My parents got me a third birthday present. A little, red Arvin radio. They plugged it in, turned it on and set the dial. The first thing I heard was "Tzena," being sung by the Weavers. A celebration of the birth of Israel. I didn't understand much about it but I could tell it was a time to remember. And I still do.

That group of singers assembled at the end of 1948 as "the No-Name Quartet," later becoming "The Weavers" and recording Tzena Tzena in 1950.

I grew up listening to this wonderful group as my parents were fond of folk music. I was introduced to so many kinds of songs, all sung with spirit and fervor by these four, with Ronnie and Pete throwing their heads back to sing out in full voice. How wonderful to see them together here - brings back good memories of childhood.

We used to sing this tune in our Christian Fellowship during the 1970s. The song was called, 'I Will Sing Unto The Lord' I Will Sing Unto The Lord/For He has triumphed gloriously/The horse and rider thrown into the sea, etc... It is taken from Exodus 14. I had no idea that this tune had such an "old root" to it.

This was not from any specific "program", 'ledder'. This was produced in 1951 as a "Snader Telescription": short filmed musical performances, produced by Louis D. Snader on the West Coast, for use on local TV stations, to be used in any way they wanted. In Philadelphia, Bob Horn combined those musical shorts, and live studio dancing, to create "BANDSTAND" on WFIL-TV in 1952 (later hosted by Dick Clark, and nationally as "AMERICAN BANDSTAND").

@drummerstevedixon I'm watching his documentary now. With the release of this song and the b side they shot up and became huge commercial hits. They were all of the sudden playing in ritzy hotels and clubs all across the nation. He doesn't drink or smoke and doesn't like nightclubs either and when they played in the fine hotels he always found somewhere else to stay instead of the ritz carlton, etc.

According to my friend, the Hebrew lyrics translate pretty much to: "Go out (tzena) , young women, and see the soldiers in our village. Don't hide yourself from the brave young men of the army." Kind of a "welcome home the handsome young men who are back on leave" type thingie. I love this song.

1950. Amazing!! Before the blacklist. Before Pete Seeger, who couldn't get work, went public schools and influenced a generation of future folk fans and folk singers. Woody Guthrie was alive, and had a three year old son named Arlo, who would grow up to perform "Tzena Tzena" and make up stories about it's origins. It's so quaint to see them looking all "respectable" when you think of the pre-Weavers Seeger and Hayes (The Alamanac Singers) and the fact that they were all Communists. Pete Seeger is as close to an authentic national treasure as we could hope to have. Every fibre of his being screams how authentic he is. Look at some of his more recent videos - 92 and still performing!
