@@MisterTsays0 sounds pretty standard lol. I was fortunate and didnt have any medical issues but know people who did. Study hard, lean into the training, and enjoy being in the 1% of enlisted aviators. Lackland has its bs, but i promise it gets better. go kill it out there!
I just got told I'll be shipping for Special Missions Aviator this upcoming November. I am so nervous and excited, I hope that this is going to be a good step towards a secure future for me.

I'm a DOD Aircraft Maintainer Crew Chief on a military base. This is by far one of the coolest jobs I've seen the USAF have. My biggest question, if anyone knows, these guys have Flight Engineer duties. How often do Special Mission Aviators do maintenance on the platform they're working? Do they learn all of the systems on the specific platform and if something goes wrong in the air, try and help keep it flying until they can land safely and brief maintenance or do they actually do aircraft maintenance as well as everything else they do? I know long question, but was wondering how much actual maintenance do they perform.
They are not maintainers, however SMA's can perform basic troubleshooting whenever a malfunction arises (I.E. pulling a circuit breaker or resetting a system). Apart from an emergency scenario, they aren't qualified to perform repairs. These guys are in charge of operating aircraft systems along side pilots, though, so they're very knowledgeable.
FactsMyGuy I could write a book about that. The 14 hr shifts, bad schedules, unnecessary stress, dozens of other things. I did get to drive a boat for almost 4 years so it wasn’t all bad lol.

I got a 72 on the ASVAB, score high in both General(80) and Electronics(76), but my Mechanical score is a 63, would I still qualify for this job by any chance??
Yes it only requires a 60 mechanical score, if I were you I’d study though. It’s a fairly technical job and imo the mechanical score requirement should be higher. Work hard and you’ll make it, good luck.
@@Miaow69 idk if you can answer this but, I know if you fail out of pj training you lose some opportunities, so would this be one of them? Or would I be able to try out multiple or just lose all opportunities if I failed? Thanks for talking too me

3rdgr2t, the person carry a rifle to the helicopter was probably a PJ, and they have their own personal weapons because they leave the aircraft for missions and must be able to defend themselves. If an SMA doesn't get the aircraft they want on their wishlist, can they eventually retrain and transfer? For example if they get assigned to an ac130 but want to be on a hh60, are they permanently locked into being an ac130 aviator or can they eventually get onto an hh60?

For any pilot career in the Air Force, First step, applicants must be qualified to join the Air Force and apply for Officer Training School. OTS applicant must have any baccalaureate degree or be a senior at a college or university to apply. You must have earned a minimum GPA of 2.5 or better to be eligible to apply. OTS applicants will contact an Air Force Line recruiter to schedule an appointment. During the initial appointment qualifications are confirmed to include education, height & weight, medical history, law violations, etc. Second step, the recruiter will schedule the OTS applicant to take the Air Force Officer Qualification Test (AFOQT). Third step, after taking the Air Force Officer Qualification Test (AFOQT) and receiving the results (may take 2-3 weeks). You and the Line Officer recruiter will work together on putting your OTS package together and submitting it to the OTS selection board. OTS is very competitive. Last step, IF selected you will receive one of the careers that YOU requested, qualified for, and serve in. You will then take your physical exam to confirm that you are medically qualified to join the Air Force and for that career. You will then attend OTS when your class date comes up. Officer Training School (OTS) is 9.5 weeks in duration at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama. The entire process depending on which OTS selection board you apply for it may take anywhere from 6 months to over a year. Don Air Force and Space Force Recruiting Service
