This color educational/training film called SELL SAFETY is meant to teach supervisors or foremen in the mines the proper way to enforce/teach safety. This explains why those in charge have to sell safety and stress safe work habits. They must create the desire to be safe and consider the negative effects when people don't take care in what they are doing. This is a 1968 film.
Opening credits: US Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines - SELL SAFETY (:09-:27). A disclaimer acknowledging the cooperation of Mining Companies & Miners who made this film possible as a shot of mining cars go by (:28-:44). Men sit and listen to an instructor. A man buys a car, another a lawnmower, another a suit. Safety is most important in preserving life. Miners underground. Our narrator tells us that safety is very important (:49-2:34). A motorman on a mining locomotive back poles his loco, this is an infraction against the rules. By doing this the worker is injured (2:35-3:19). How do supervisors sell the necessity of safe work habits? Stress the importance of regular income. A home is shown with a family entering it. A nice middle class neighborhood. Workman compensation is a poor substitute for regular earnings. Another mining accident is shown. A miner cuts a corner and slices a hose causing an accident (3:20-4:53). Most workers work safely but some take chances. Most men want to do their work correctly but hazards should still be explained. No one wants to be injured. Lots of mining footage is shown with injuries occurring (4:54-6:16). Safety is a way of life and this must be conveyed by those on charge. A man is asked to make sure he wears his helmet (6:17-6:57). A guy dealer sells a man a rifle. A man sells his wife on the idea of buying a rifle. Something must be sold as tangible to be wanted (6:58-7:28). Safety requires selling. A man conducts a meeting in the mines. More mine footage. Your product is safety and you must believe in what you teach (7:29-8:21). Products are shown as to how they are sold. The biggest reward is being alive and uninjured (8:22-8:57). At 8:43 a woman with a bouffant hairdo is shown checking out at the grocery store. A meeting for new foremen is shown. These ideas are most important: dedication, perseverance, sincerity, and good example (8:58-9:23). Sell safety as a way of life (9:24-9:38). End credits (9:39-9:43).

I live next to the bureau of mines in South Park, PA It is the creepiest place.. I can't explain, but there's definitely something going on here. The security rivals the White House, and random nights (very rarely thee will be a handful of cars that fly up to one part (you'll see the lights.. like there's some sort of emergency or something going on. Just unbelievably creepy. Talk to anyone that has anything to do with the place, they clam up instantly.. one person at a bar literally got up and left when I asked them about what they do there and about what goes on there.

Thanks, Periscope! Having done quarry work and being under MSHA off and on for a long while I had to unlearn it all when I started back working for a private contractor. Getting the job done gets interesting. Thanks again!
