This film shows the USMC operating at the best of its abilities in conflict zones, with brave men struggling against enemies, and working hard to save the lives of their compatriots. In 1965 the U.S. Marines were deployed in two separate battles to stall communism -- in the Dominican Republic and Vietnam. New and advanced military strategy was deployed, like helicopter assaults (seen at 12:07) and Expeditionary Landing Fields also known as ELF (Seen at 12:40). An embedded journalist asking a soldiers what possessed him to run into the paddies, who replies "I'm a Marine."
:45 A pilot prepping for amputation, calmly speaking as he talks about carrying his leg, followed by bloodied up soldiers being placed on the back of a truck1:20 Narrator opens, “1965 was a year like no other in history, fleet Marines were committed to combat in both hemispheres at once.” Photos of Marine deployment in the Dominican Republic and Vietnam.2:45 The Caribbean in April, 1965 turns from friendly paradise to unrest and upheaval threatening the hemisphere. 3:10 President Lyndon Johnson addresses the nation about taking out a communist government in the western hemisphere.4:01 Units from the USS Boxer are able to react on a minute’s notice. Spearhead platoon sets up defense perimeter around the American embassy and of civilians in our hotel. U.S. citizens are evacuated immediately.6:36 return to the scene of the soldiers being carried in the back of the jeep. Four wandered outside on the International Line where two soldiers are sent back for medical attention but the two Americans are held as prisoners, the U.S. marines are hostile. The Dominicans apologize for the shooting via radio and ask the Americans to keep their line.8:14 We hear the voice of a soldier narrating about a sniper who couldn’t aim and they left him alone for the sake of safety. Didn’t want the enemy replacing him with someone who could shoot. 9:36 Soldiers are now in a very different much more hostile terrain in full camo and heated firefights. We watch as soldiers are belly down in the trenches shooting out enemy fire.11:05 The difficulty of the terrain is explained, from swamp to tropic jungles and desert. Helicopters are the lifeline of survival and transport through the difficult terrain.12:40 Navy CBs deploy the expeditionary landing field, ELF, everything is preformed and air transportable. They put down 8k feet of runway and everything that would be necessary to build a carrier deck ashore. 13:50 Skyhawk jets arrive and can begin action almost immediately. They deploy to support ground troops in the field. There is a pilot on the ground pin pointing targets for the jets and giving them locations by radio. The objective is to minimize delay between a call for air support and arrival. 15:57 Missiles, carriers and phantom jets are showcased as the New Breed to describe the 1960s Marines. Phantom can break the sound barrier and the armament they carry is highly flexible. A great deal of precaution is taken to minimize casualties. 17:49 We are returned to the footage of the soldier (now revealed to be a Colonel, apparently a USMC pilot) being prepped for amputation, he is calmly speaking as he is told that the medic will do all he can to save that leg. We see operating room footage. He explains how he was injured by asking to hold fire -- to not drop napalm -- while he asked the women and children to leave the area. He was still in the field when they caught a round. 19:20 Naval Missiles are shooting and the soldiers are shown doing large scale offenses. Marines are trained to seek out the enemy and apply a tactic called Virtual Elimination of Organized Combat Capability. 20:30 A helicopter comes near the ground in the middle of the jungle as troops jump out and then we see them engaged in short range rocket fire against the enemy.
21:15 The young soldiers are praised for their intelligence and capabilities. 21:50 A mix of footage and dialogue as the scenes cut in and out of real battle situations,22:25 Soldiers carrying a wounded brother and applying first aid as the others watch on. A radio call for a chopper is called in and the soldier is taken and brought in for help 23:42 “Marine casualties have been light in Vietnam.”. Soldiers locate Vietcong fighters as the VC soldiers are restrained and taken prisoner. They are described as formidable, hardened and cold. Tunnel systems are shown as well as Viet Cong prisoners.25:55 The soldiers enter the villages and try to communicate peace and kindness.27:10 American soldiers guard farmers as the harvest and the solders help bring the crops in.27:44 Navy doctors and Corpsmen are in a clinic helping children with wounds and sickness as the music turns from dire to uplifting. The kids are given Christmas presents from the soldiers, donated by American families. 28:55 Pictures of numerous soldiers faces are shown and we come to an abrupt end.

My Dad was 11 when the troops arrived. He would shine the boots of the Marines in exchange for canned food. He spoke kindly of 2 Marines named John and Scott who took a liking to him. Always wondered if they're still alive. My dad still tells me the story.

One tough Marine Colonel. Wasnt the first time he's wounded in combat, probably a Marine before WW2 in China, then combat in the Pacific, then combat again in Korea, then stationed both State side and overseas, wounded again in Viet Nam. My respects.

This is one of my FAVORITE black & white combat newsreel footage of a Marine and his fellow comrades running into the rice paddies under heavy enemy fire to save one of their OWN...That is the EPITOME of NEVER leaving a man behind....This is taught in ALL branches of the Armed Forces, ESPECIALLY in both the Army and Marines.......And I'm very PROUD to say I've EARNED the RIGHT to have WORN the uniform of the United States Army. Respectfully....... Eddie

My pop's was a Marine there in 1965. He had an agricultural deferment. That my grandfather got for him. My grandpa fought in world war two. He didn't want to see his son fight in a war. My dad's uncle was a marine in world war two. My dad went to him and told him. That my grandpa got him that deferment. My dad's uncle drove him to corpus christi texas. We're that boy from Premont Texas. Volunteer to be a United states Marine. My father passed away 9 months ago. Thank you to everyone that served our great Country

17:50 This Marine pilot most likely lost his leg. All because he didnt think the enemy would be in the same area as women and children. He held off an attack, and was hit obviously. He even says he could not bring himself to nap innocents. Such brutality from both sides.. I commend this guy very much for doing the what he thought was right.

Kind of reminds me of the old MASH episode where the North Korean pilot "5 o'clock Charlie" would buzz the 4077 and drop bombs that would never hit anything. When Major Burns brought in an anti-aircraft gun crew to shoot Charlie down, Hawkeye objected using similar reasoning that the North Koreans might start sending MIG fighters instead, so Charlie was left alone.

Amazing how the Corps has resurrected the concept of expeditionary airfields using aircraft carrier arrestor gear to handle fast movers. What they did in Nam in 1965 has been brought back for Marine Corps air operations in the East China and South China seas for a possible war with China where the Marines can seize an island and set up an ELF which can be taken apart and moved to another island. Marine Corps history is full of the Corps finding solutions by looking back at past wars instead of relearning the hard way.

It seems like we were winning in the beginning with Marines using M14s, Phantoms and the M60 Machine Gun-The Pig-but then the whole scene changed when we got that new black squirrel rifle, the M16 and the war went downhill from there. A rifle can change the whole scene-and even swords and who is using it. It’s a damn shame.

Charles Garvin, I don’t know about the M-16 being a reason for a change in fortunes for the USA military in Vietnam, but I do believe the constant meddling by LBJ and McNamara was a big reason for the boots to fair less than favourably in the war, and Westmorland was not much better, spending most of his time kissing LBJ and McNamaras asses and towing the line, living in a private protected compound, having a private pool built for him by Engineers who should have been supporting the boots. Westmorland spent the rest of his time doing photo opportunities and press conferences, attending social gatherings of south Vietnamese hierarchy (most of whom were corrupt) and a fraction of his oh so precious time making dumb assed decisions and blaming others for the failures. So the M-16 was not universally liked but I don’t think it was a serious reason for failure, well not after they sorted out the “teething problems”

That's right. Applied modern war strategy. Its mostly all logistics: "Don't kill em; but wound them. It requires more man power, and keeps the enemy busier looking after their casualties than shipping home the dead."

The Marines went in to help ensure that American citizens were kept out of harms way, and in the process stop the communists from getting a foot hold in the Western Hemisphere alongside Cuba, don’t forget this is the 60s when fear of the “reds” was a huge and real fear, not just for the USA but for Europe a well. It might seem OTT to us now, but then it only took small things to elicit a huge, sometimes overreaction, from western nations. It is all still happening today, but using much more sneaky tactics, cybercrime, spy satellites, and many other ways, but it still happens.

Professional? Wtf at 21:29 , never walk in the fireline of an Machine Gun , walk behind the gun, the way its only 2 or 3 feet longer, ive learned this during the base Training in fed. germanys "marines" called Green Navy ( 76er) in germany . What happens when just in this moment the VC begin to fire ? Your MG which is important for supress enemy fire cant fire because this Grunts moved in front of the MG Team. Our Drillinstructor would gave us a hard time and bad words when we behaved like this MARINES I also surprised how US combat Troops in Vietnam refused to camo itself, we spend much time to camo , when we are in open fields we took Grass when in Woods leafs, one time during the base tarining when we were fresh soldiers we encounterd a group of Grenadiers ( in the forrest) they were so heavy camoflaged, we were only a few meters away from them and we saw them at first when they stand up and moved away I always see Soldiers in VN smoking on Patrol, hey guys your enemy can smell that meters away in the thick jungle where you cant see a few feet , i remeber i saw a vid about the 1st Air Cav when they arrived in VN 65 or 66, an officier told them not to use aftershave or parfumed soap because in the jungle or at night Charly could smell it.

Most combat footage of US troops in Nam where those of large units such as whole battalions out in the field. You are not going to sneak up on anyone as a unit of that size crashing through the jungle. Special Forces, SEALs, Army LRRP/Ranger units, Marine Recon and Army Snipers Marine Scout Snipers, did use camo. So did the Australians and New Zealand troops who were US allies in that war. A big problem was US Army leadership that was made up mostly of officers who served in Europe as company level officers, and served in Korea as field grade ones, were used to fighting huge wars out in the open against an enemy they sought to destroy with artillary. Marine Corps leaders had lots of jungle and island fighting experience, but in Vietnam they ultimately had to answer to Army leaders. A lot of that has to be laid at the feet of higher ups in both the Army and the Corps who were always looking for a large set piece battle where they could draw the VC/NVA out into the open and destroy them. This was a response to demads for progress from the political leadership. Since Vietnam wasn't a war where US troops could capture major cities such as Rome,Paris, Manila, Seoul,or Tokyo to show progress to the public, the only way the government could show progress in Vietnam was in enemy killed. That means forcing major engagements.

I really don’t think we should take any advice from anyone serving in the German Army. You have a military that has become a joke. Reluctant recruits, old equipment and a couple of hundred tanks. Lack of spare parts for your equipment. And more importantly a lack of will to fight. Your country is going the tubes before your eyes. Radical environmentalism, old industries, bureaucratic paralysis and a most importantly a declining birthrate. But don’t worry your Muslim brothers will soon be taking over Germany and all will be fine.

Incorrect sir. It was the 3rd Battalion, Sixth Marines. They landed the entire battalion in the outskirts of Santo Domingo. Later an Army Airborne unit landed to take the place of 3/6. I was attached to 3/6 a couple of months after they came back to Camp Lejuene. The entire 2nd Marine Division was there to greet them, along with bands and a huge crowd.
