U S Military M 1961 plastic canteens

I’ve got one of these. It is a black canteen from 1993. This thing is older than me, and still works remarkably well. The seal on this particular one is better than some 21st century bottles. It does smell of plastic when you open it, though. Fortunately, the water doesn’t taste like liquid plastic.

In 1970 we were issued the 1966 OD green plastics with aluminum cups. During hot day manuevers we had to sign for a 2nd canteen for extra water. At the end of manuevers we had to sign back in the 2nd canteen. I managed to find one at a garage sale, with canvas cover. Unfortunately I lost the aluminum cup. Thanks for the informative video.

I have to look at mine to see what year it was made. I do prefer the plastic over the metal. Mine is the olive green model. By the way, I use mine frequently.

Never used the 2 quart collapseable canteen, didn't trust it. Did some cross training with British SBS, they carried a 2 quart hard plastic canteen I bought 10 of them. They work well and never had an issue with them even on Jumps and or water insertions. Good video thank you have a nice day.

Lots of good info!! I wished I still had mine from back when I was in the Marines. I did not know though that the were dated on the bottom. I do have one dated 1994 now though, it does have the NBC -3rd version lid on it. YuP the corner is broken LOL

1. This canteen was designed & built in Canada with first issue to the troops in 1960. The US Army evaluated & trialed it, then adopted it as designed in 1961 with first issue late 1962.

Just ordered 2 tan ones 1 black and 1 green to put 2 inside my f150 full. 1 in my car full. And 1 empty in my truck. Wanted something to be kinda rugged for the road

Hoping to be corrected, but I was led to understand that the plastic cap retaining strap was a separate piece of plastic and not part of a direct mold to cap and canteens having that are in fact copies. Still work as a canteen of course but not original piece of US kit.

Do you have one that has plastic hook on back, to attach to pack without using a pouch or cover for it?

I have a 1983 canteen is it safe to drink out of? Or is it bpa free?
