This 1958 unclassified U.S. Navy training film by De Frenes Co. is about relative motion and the maneuvering board, which are used to help set a ship’s course. Multiple destroyers move through the water close to each other. Drawings of relative plots and vector triangles on paper with multiple tolls needed are shown (:35-1:23). A maneuvering board is explained in detail, including the plotting circle and azimuth circle lines. How to use the printed scales is diagramed. Time, distance, and speed can be determined in relation to each other using the printed numbers and a compass (1:24-4:52). Plotting. Drawing instructions include how to determine a vector triangle and relative plot (4:53-7:29). Vector Triangle. How to use a vector triangle to make decisions regarding the maneuvering ship, the reference ship, and the direction of relative motion are detailed (7:30-8:44). Solving Own Ship’s Course. How to determine the relative plot is shown by drawing a vector triangle and using a compass (8:45-12:34). Solving for Direction of Relative Motion. The radar tower is in motion on a destroyer. The bearings and time are marked on the maneuvering board to determine a relative plot for when the other vessel will pass and to avoid a collision (12:35-16:58). Determining Relative Speed. An officer works on a maneuvering board with pipes and equipment behind him. How to determine relative speed is shown (16:59-18:35). Maneuvering Ships True Course and Speed. A vector triangle is plotted (18:36-20:14). Previous images are flashed by as the benefits of using a maneuvering board are stated (20:15-21:50).

I love this stuff. Fascinating. Couldn’t imagine computing this stuff under fire.

I remember helping the Chief grade maneuvering board exercises. We would take each guy's paper and line it up with a correctly done one and hold it up to the light from the window. It was either exact or Wrong. There really wasn't a grade, just 100% or wrong. Oh the memories... Yall Take Care, John

I remember these well from my days as an OS in the Navy. I was pretty good with it, but it could be a nightmare having to keep up with a lot of traffic and getting the info out fast.

Ahhh, MoBoard! Thanks from a crusty old retired LCDR! Everybody hated this class and Celestial Navigation the most!

Apparently even the Navy hates it nowadays, as evidenced by U.S.S Fitzgerald (DDG-62).

Fascinating to compare the paper-and-pencil era with what computers do nowadays. This must have been challenging during heavy seas or other pressures. As an aviator we have a similar system using the 6B Dead Reckoning Computer. Likewise it is challenging to use in a cockpit bouncing in turbulence. GPS navigation is infinitely easier. Still, one has to know how to use manual systems when the electronics goes bad.

No it's second nature to an experienced CIC, we had the answer before the bridge asked for it,

@@Johnnycdrums It might have been stressful when your ship was being attacked by Kamikazes and submarines during WWII :-)

The sad thing is that a lot of navigation systems AREN'T taught or practiced now. I was disturbed by the number of young service members that have No knowledge of celestial navigation. Thankfully basic compass skills are still taught to some (I believe, but that may have been discontinued also). Good luck to an inexperienced individual with a compass if they get very close to the north pole... Yall Take Care, John

This was the most basic task for an operations specialist. I was doing those in the Navy.

Same here, a good CIC has the station keeping answers ready to go before the Bridge asks for it. Nowadays, if it's a DDG, they just crash.

@raybin6873: I know they weren't allowed to be used during math tests in school. And yes jamin, when you say "slide rule" to someone these days, they look at you like you just dropped in from the moon!
