Authors Ingunn Røysland and Charles Ivan Armstrong discuss their new book, U2’s Songs of Trauma and Hope: “Between the Midnight and the Dawning," with the U2 Conference. In their exploration of light and dark, and of hope and trauma within the U2 catalogue, Røysland and Armstrong acknowledge the complexity of the songs, addressing different layers, including romantic as well as divine allegory. Their contribution to U2 studies draws upon theories from trauma and memory studies to examine song lyrics and performances by U2, spanning from the early days of the band to more recent times.
Ingunn Røysland is teacher of English and German and currently teaches German at Skigymnaset, Hovden, Norway. She completed her Master's thesis in English at the University of Agder, Kristiansand, Norway. She has been a U2 fan for more than four decades and has always taken a deep interest in the song lyrics of the band.
Charles I. Armstrong is professor of English literature at the University of Agder. With Martina Domines Veliki, he is also the co-editor of Suffering in Anglophone Literatures, forthcoming from Lexington Press in 2024. In addition to being the current president of the International Yeats Society and a Visiting Scholar at Wolfson College, Cambridge, he is a member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters.
