At least phil has embraced being bald, he hasn't been wearing a hat for the past 30 years to hide his slap head , and imagine being called " the edge" when you're in your sixties lol.
No this is U2 thinking they are superior to Phil and that he’s not trendy enough to be associated with. Wouldn’t have behaved that for a second if it was Peter Gabriel.
Phil Collins handled it with grace like the professional he was. U2 on the other hand acted like multi millionaire, self conscious, pretentious immature twats!
People who weren't fans of U2 probably don't realize that this entire album and tour was an act, a reaction to all of the criticism they previously received for being what some perceived as overly earnest and sincere, that they took themselves too seriously and needed to loosen up and just be rock stars. This particular bit didn't go over well but it really was just them facetiously pretending to be what people expected from rock stars, and poking fun of themselves for acting so serious all of the time.
I have nothing to add to this, I'm just replying so more people see this comment, I see so many people in these comments who are absolutely clueless about his U2's 90s personas
But now they've actually morphed into that grotesque act. They're are the caricatures they used to poke fun at. Even Larry didn't want to be involved in the hi-tech Vegas thingy.
😂😂😂I don't know if I believe that but sober phil.... can we not see that as genius? Mini me called the show... to be fair both singers are midges... but point is phil sober is more shocking 😅😅😅
This is obviously very insulting!! Phil Collins is one of thee greatest drummers, most successful songwriters and musicians of all time! Jealousy and ignorance ain't charming or clever
I'm sure U2 guys regret this behaviour! They were totally drunk and tried to be funny or something.. They really respect Phil. Phil is amazing musician, drummer and singer for god sake. U2 had some wild moments in back then but afterwards they have been very polite and great excample how band can be together so many decades with same members. We are going to miss all of these bands and artists who maked the popular music good.. Nowadays we have only shit.
It wasn’t staged or a joke. They apparently apologised later. U2 saw themselves as counter culture infiltrating the mainstream (Bono’s words) - Phil Collins was some sort of enemy back then to young teenagers. U2 themselves were just in their late 20s/early 80’s. Things changed. People relaxed. Music doesn’t have the same weight socially anymore. But back then this was real. They fired similar stabs at others they saw as “entertainers” as opposed to “artists” such as Cliff Richard during an interview in 1988. Random fact, this was filmed in U2’s local pub called The Dockers. Paddy the barman was a legend and it was just next to their studio and management were they’re still based to this day.
That's the old Dockers Bar on Sir John Rogerson Quay just around the corner from Windmill Lane studios. The band used to drink in there all the time , as did I after work back in the day. Think it was demolished about 10 years ago. And this is all a bit of banter which clearly has gone over the heads of many who are neither Irish or English....the title of the video needs changing.
@standard_jay. Unless I'm missing something I didn't hear what you could call insults, it just seems to be a bit of banter. They know that Phill Collins is a great artist in his own right.
zdunas23 Right, Genesis early stuff I listen to more today than anything by U2. Songs like Stagnation to me are better than anything U2 have ever made.
Absolutely, wonder why people don't get it here, you can even tell by the way Phil is smirking and asking his questions the entire conversation is led with the wink of an eye. Plus, I've looked it up, the 1992 Billboards were held in Los Angeles and both parties have travelled California - Britain/Ireland more than enough in their careers, and Phil is supposed to not know what time it is there when he's having a downlink to Dublin? Not to mention it doesn't add up it's "1 am in the morning" with U2. Award ceremonies usually don't start before 6pm PST in LA, that would make 2 am Irish time (8 hrs time shift). Ergo....all a hoax.
I find it hilarious people are getting upset at U2 . You ever stop to think they maybe know Phil Collins personally? It sounds like they were just giving him a hard time like friends do .
That was a bit awkward. Yeah Phil has only been making hits and winning Grammy's and Academy Awards for 50 years with over 250 million albums sold. Tossers.
u2 Has really diappointed Me AS A LONGTIME FAN SINCE THE BOY album ,,,AND THEY DISRESPECT A LEGENDARY SINGER AND ONE OF THE BEST OF ALL TIME SONG WRITERS ,,,THEY ARENT S&IT COMPARED TO PHIL COLLINS .....!!!!!!! WITHOUT GENESIS THEY WOULDNT HAVE A CAREER IN PROGRESSIVE ROCK GENESIS WAS DOING THAT SH8It WHEN THEY LEARNED HOW TO GET OUT OF DIAPERS........BONO YOU BETTER RECOGNIZE WHO YOUR DADDY IS and EDGE YOU AINT NOTHING WITHOUT YOUR PREDESSORS !!!!!!!!!
Simply by being a member of Genesis elevates Phil Collins to a level these champagne socialists could never even hope to attain. One with a hair transplant, the other wearing a woolen hat to hide his baldness....and they try to take the piss!
But now they've actually morphed into that grotesque act. They're are the caricatures they used to poke fun at. Even Larry didn't want to be involved in the hi-tech Vegas thingy.
There has been a lot of Nonsenses written about this clip.Non of you has understood that this was a make Clip.It is full of Ironic statements .If some of you would have seen the Zoo TV Tour in the early 90s you would understand what It is all about. The band didn‘t take themselves serious at that Time. The make up call from George Bush was used during the Zoo TV Tour as well by the way .
Phil Collins is actually an example of a fantastic musical talent and a man with a great sence of humour, driven to look like something else, because of jealousy and hate. Jealousy can destroy people. Think about it.
hey boomer you took yoga classes to become flexible enough to blow yourself because nobody else would do it 😂🤣😂🤣 triggered? You commented on 37 posts🤣😂🤣😂
Absolutely Irish to the core. If you hang out in Ireland you will see that this is typical pub humor, a little biting, a little real, but also all in good fun. It's great to see the lads just being real and unguarded. Phil Collins is an excellent musician with a brilliant career. They can take the piss out of him but it's just lads in a pub.
It's so funny to watch people acting so pissy watching this. Obviously having the guys be recorded in a pub is a gag by the show's producers and the band's just playing it up. Phil is playing along too stiffly but he still keeps going. Watching the clash of egos by everyone involved adds to the humor.
U2 is my most favourite rock band, but Genesis/Phil Collins are one my most favorite musicians as well. Both are two of the greatest rock acts of all times.
Absolutely they were drunk no doubt about it. They were trying... at least Edge was; but when you're that deep into an evening it's hard to pull off a TV interview.
I miss this U2. Poking fun, having a laugh. It was all sarcasm, irony and outright self-mockery. U2 fans know this, the entire 90's was deliberately insincere and arose from the fact that people in the 80's quite literally expected them to solve world hunger, and U2 decided that their image was too self-important, and it was time to cut it down. In fact, Bono stated at the time that "Achtung, Baby" was the sound of four men chopping down the Joshua Tree.
Laurence Dunne We irish call it The Craic and it has been lost over the years with all the serious in entertainment....jesus the last time I saw an Irish band be themselves was The pogues in 1999. I was 4 lol watched them while on my dads shoulders in galway and met Bono a couple days after
+Laurence Dunne as much as u say that and i agree to a degree - but it;s worth remembering they stiII supported causes heavily and said poIticaI things - starting your concert with george bush sir and nazi marching drums is not Iight fare but they had so much suss and humour working with them at the time - it's aIso worth remembering they were broadcasting form sarajevo by the pop tour! :-)
+scenecheck123MYJ You have to understand the relationship between the Irish and the British. The were just "taking the piss" Nothing malicious in it. If it was 2 US bands then it may be a different story.
I was 21 at the time and remember this event well. There was indeed a controversy that resulted from this exchange. To Bono's credit, he walked it back after a few days and might have even apologized for it. Anyway, I don't think there were any hard feelings going forward between the two
Yeah, that didn't seem light hearted to me. That seemed a bit mean spirited, honestly. And I'm not even a fan of Phil Collins. It would be one thing if they were jousting back and forth, but U2 were definitely being kinda dicky, and being drunk is a poor excuse.
right, if it were an intentional setup Phil would have had some comebacks ready. he just tried to be diplomatic - I mean even offering to be an opening act? that was gentlemanly of him and they kept being dicks.
@@glennpagemusic *It's pretty tough to mock a bunch of old, irrelevant rock stars and label them as "awful"... when they're raking in almost $4 MILLION/show at the Sphere in Las Vegas! Sh*tttttt... if only I could be that awful !!!*
Yeah, that's a bummer. And phil was so respectful, even humbling himself to say something such as, "If you need an opener, I'm here!". Bono and co. were always too full of themselves. They'll never leave behind the legend that Gabriel, Collins, and co. have.
U2 are lightweights musically compared to the rich years of 70's Genesis and their prog classics. And personality-wise, the Genesis guys leave them in the dust. Looks like they needed lots of alcohol to stay afloat. I guess the Irish background still had them on the defensive too. Phil ends up with more respect in the end.
U2's music from that era still holds up and Zoo TV is still rated as one of greatest tours of all time. Prog rock hasn't held up, and at no point in the last 30 odd years has it been reassessed in any positive way. The Irish comment must be one of the dumbest things I've ever read. Please tell me you're not British?
I've been a fan of U2's music since I was 10 but this made me angry and really sorry for Phil. Really disrespectful behavior. Even if it was a joke, it wasn't very funny.
why are all the comments shot at bono..he didnt even say anything till the end..he was polite .and im sure they are all friends...u2 is one of the greatest bands ever and always will be ..plus was probably staged
This does not sit comfortably with me being Irish who are generally friendly and welcoming on the whole, trying to tell myself that this was a just a joke that Phil Collins was in on but seriously it does not look good, U2 may be talented and their lives shows legendary but this looks in very bad taste and somewhat embarrassing.
KLR, I thought Achtung Baby was APPALLING, terrible commercial garbage. Even One is tedious shit to me now. GARBAGE. Laughable you'd think that shit better than Joshua Tree.
U2 lost my interest after about 2005, I met Bono around 2005, the whole experience made me think how pointless it is to lionize a person, I think stardom went to his head imo, sometimes it is better not to meet those you admire, everyone has different experiences but mine changed my perspective on famous "stars"
@@declanfitzpatrick8268 There is real therapy needed for those who lionize and obsess over complete strangers like Rock Stars.. maybe you're one of them?
@@paulmcgrath6118 They have actually reopened the place. The pints looked great to be fair.Grogans is a great spot and the background looks really similar
I prefer Phil over U2, just Phil worked with Brian Eno, Robert Fripp, and other artists, being a great drummer and percussionist in Genesis. Ah, and also a good singer who in his best moments he could have a very decent range (tenor one). Not everyone can hit some notes Phil does. You can ask Steve Hackett about Phil's talents, even after he left Genesis. About U2 they are good but for me not in the level of Collins' career
U2 are an incredible act but Phil Collins is an easy target. He might not be rock n roll but his songs have brought many millions of people happiness. It might be middle of the road but you don't sell millions of records for nothing. Phil, You're alright!
Stuart listen to Phil’s drumming on Peter Gabriel era Genesis track ‘The Musical Box’ and you’ll understand Phil did more to move true progressive heavy dramatic hard rock and roll forward than you might have known from only listening to the hits from his solo career.
