@@yellowharley1 The Edge is the king of simple but efficient riffs. Are there loads of technically more proficient guitarists who would be able to reproduce his sounds? Yes. But would they come up with those sounds in the first place? Probably not.
@bighenry6633
@bighenry6633 Год назад
@@yellowharley1 A lot of people say that Edge isn't a technically brilliant guitarist, that he uses simple pedal effects that so many other can copy very well. Probably true (since so many are saying it there will be some truth to it), but no-one else comes up with these sounds in the first place. Sounds and effects that are perfect for the music they are placed in. A lot of critics claim that to be a good guitarist you have to shred at ridiculous speeds, but that's not true. There are some that are masters of the gaps between the notes, such as Gilmour or Knopfler, some are masters of bending notes (Gilmour, again), and some are masters of creating effects and sounds, such as Edge.

It's funny that this one has elicited way more of these types of reactions than many of her other videos. And it surprises me because U2 would definitely be one the least surprising of all the bands she's never heard before. They exist in a fairly narrow valley in pop music, something I don't think their fans realise. I love some of their songs, their early ones, but I also recognise that they have a kind of marmite quality. You can see that by the incredulity and shock of their fans in these comments.

This is rapidly becoming one of my favourite channels on youtube. It's fascinating to hear you bring your vast knowledge of music and an open mind to bear on some of my favourite songs. You've given me insights I could never have acquired otherwise and enhanced my enjoyment of music. In my opinion we could do with more female artists, though, here's a few suggestions: Kate Bush - Moments of Pleasure. Kate reminiscing on the friends she's lost over the years and one she was losing, her mother who was dying at the time the song was written. All set to Michael Kamen's wonderful orchestration. Fairport Convention - Who Knows Where The Time Goes? Sandy Denny wrote this song at 19, and this melancholy masterpiece features Sandy's crystal-clear soprano and Richard Thompson's wonderfully understated guitar accompaniment. Bjork - All Is Full Of Love. Bjork's singing starts off quietly with her charming breathy Icelandic inflections before suddenly exploding into her full power. Ella Fitzgerald - Strange Fruit. Heartbreaking classic. Etta James - I'd Rather Go Blind. Another classic built on the power of Etta's voice. Anyway, whatever you bring to us I'll look forward to it. Your students are very lucky to have such an inspirational teacher as you.

I feel as if the music beautifully and tragically portrays the flow of many a long relationship. We can just go along, be carried by it, with all of the deep emotion (often negative) accumulating underneath that we barely notice. The pain and human suffering in Bono’s voice and in the lyrics is so present. This song, like many others in U2’s collection, is *felt* as much as heard.
@AndTheRoadGoesEverOn

ONE has a beautiful melody & forward-flowing energy, as you picked up on, but it is *mostly lauded for its sophisticated lyrics & message* - which give it its anthemic quality. There are other U2 hits that are more musically complex & have an even greater build from a barely-there start-and where the music is the star of the show. Here the focus is mainly on Bono’s expressive singing & lyrics. Would love to see you react to other U2 songs.

When Bono first begins singing, her comment was "nice voice". Bono's stage name is a short form of his gang nickname from his childhood, which was Bono Vox of O'Connell Street. The other gang members just called him Bono to shorten it and it stuck to the point that his family calls him that too. The gang member who gave him the nickname got it from Bonavox, the name of a hearing aid company in Dublin. The company took their name from the Latin phrase vox bona, which means good voice. His birth name is Paul David Hewson. So I had to laugh when she immediately said what his stage name might translate to in English.

I listened again. Absolutely loved this. "Nothing Extra, Nothing missing". That is the essence of U2. There are two videos on RU-vid concerning the edge demonstrating his guitar rig. Let The Edge demonstrate echo, delay and some other effects, and Amy will have the basic U2 sound down. After that, much like the Beatles, U2 explored many different musical styles, especially when they made it to the top of the profession and decided to "chop down the Joshua Tree". Finally, of course there is that prevailing theme found throughout U2's songs. I won't be a spoiler. Amy will pick up on that as well with a few more song selections along the way, or she will find it in her research. The hint: U2 came of age in an era when the motto was "sex, drugs and rock and roll". Against that backdrop, what message might be the most subversive?

New subscriber here, I'm really enjoying hearing your breakdowns because I don't know any music theory to speak of (I tried to take a music theory class in college and failed it, it's the only class I've ever feel that in my life), and in fact didn't even hear certain notes at all when I was younger, it took me years to build my ear to the point where I could hear half the notes in a run for instance. I only respond to music based on how it affects me emotionally, so it's really interesting to hear the techniques behind those emotional responses I experience with the music. Also it's interesting that you touched on a phenomenon with the way the Mississippi begins that directly links my brain to another song, this by the Indigo Girls, called "Ghost", wherein they sing: "Well the Mississippi's mighty, but it starts in Minnesota at a place that you can walk across with five steps down; and I guess that's how you started, like a pinprick to my heart; but at this point you rush right through me and I start to drown."

Finally, a true classic from the early 90s. Production values really are great, with headphones it's a absolute another experiencie than without. The guitar at the end probably it's rhytmically programmed by The Edge, who works a lot with the sound of his guitar. A lot of creativity there from a guitar's point of view, even if its not techinacally virtuoso, his sound and engineering it's proper of a master in his craft.

The sixties English group, Procol Harum, had a unique blend of classical melodies and poetry. Words and music by Keith Reid and Gary Brooker respectfully. Deep Purple's is the more complex composition and arraignment, but I think it's Bono's very personal lyrics and the building intensity of the accompaniment that makes One such a meaningful song for people. It's like in the world of guitar, people are sometimes characterized as being either Jeff Beck people or David Gilmore people (not that you can't like both). Beck is the virtuoso who incorporates a lot of musical ideas into his playing. Gilmore is not as virtuosic, but he seems to hit the notes and finds the tone that touches the heart. So yeah, its a matter of taste.

The band were at the perfect point, far along enough to have become great musicians and songwriters but no so far as to have become world famous, jaded and ironical. Bro she’s a classical musician😭and because of that, I’m pretty sure she’s gunna listen to the actual music first before paying attention to the songwriting. And imagine telling somebody how to make their video…just click off If u don’t like it instead of leaving a dumb comment

I heard the song first from Johnny Cash. Not sure if he is the songwriter. But years before U2!

Isn't Pachelbel's Canon considered to be the single most influential piece of music because of how often it is referenced in modern music of all genres? Regarding this song specifically, I can't wait for your in-depth look to see what you think of the lyrics.

The U2 guitarist spends a lot of time perfecting the sound for each song.

I used to like this song as much as Axl Rose. Then I heard the Johnny Cash cover. Cash brings a stately world weariness to the song that Bono could only dream of.

Bono and Edge never understood why this break-up song was played at weddings.

He could be talking about his voice and the guitar: “we’re one, but we’re not the same” 😁

She IS right. Edge's guitar tones are his voice. He said It. It IS not mine. And Sinccrhonia bettween Bono and Him IS theit Brotherhood. All the Banda. They are still a group of FRIENDS. That IS theit main success. And again, this IS not mine. Paul MC Guiness said It. Theit manager for more than 30 years. Thanks. LOVE BLESS ❤ ❤❤❤

Achtung babe is the last of the greatest U2 albums, along with Unforgettable Fire, Joshua Tree and Rattle and Hum, those are life-changing, sublime records; sadly nothing as beautiful has come after Achtung Babe, I don't blame them honestly, the bar was set too high! Hard to beat

AGREED! I was never able to get back on the U2 train after Achtung Baby and that was 32 years ago!!. If The Fly isn't one of their top 5 songs, then something is wrong.

All That You Can’t Leave Behind has some great songs (In a Little While, Walk On). Every Breaking Wave is beautiful. Otherwise, I agree.

@@randomperson-dy6kj - ‘Kite’ is classic U2. Even more so than ‘Walk On’. Up there with ‘Stay’ and ‘Miss Sarajevo’. The live piano version of ‘Every Breaking Wave’ is also up there (especially the 2014 European MTV Awards performance).

Every great group put out at least a few such songs which start simply and gradually build up to a complex and interweaving musical tapestry whose parts all flow together, as Amy put it, and complement each other. Examples are the Beatles' Hey Jude, the Rolling Stones' You Can't Always Get What You Want, Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven and Simon and Garfunkel's The Boxer, which Amy has already reacted to and liked.

It ain't "Bone-oh". Bahn-oh. Or 1/2 of a "bon-bon" w/ an "oh". She's not tellin' me anything new. Beautiful lyric. As pretty as his voice is, the raw emotion is released. Maybe his finest recorded moments. The sound's textured. Edge builds soundscapes. I hear old Stones filtered through decades of pain, from abuse & abandoned promises. Burned out psychedelic blues heard through the jagged edges of blown out brick row home windows. I don't think it's so much "about oneness" as it it is a lament about the differences that broke it apert.
