'One Tree Hill' was written in memory of Greg Carroll, a New Zealander who U2 first met in Auckland during The Unforgettable Fire tour in 1984. Greg became very close friends with lead singer Bono and later served as a roadie for the group.
Sadly Greg Carroll was killed in July 1986 in a motorcycle accident in Dublin.
After Greg's tangi (funeral) in New Zealand, Bono wrote the lyrics to "One Tree Hill" in his memory. The lyrics reflect Bono's thoughts at the tangi and during his first night in New Zealand when Greg took him up Auckland's One Tree Hill.

This song is perfection! Until today, I didn't know it was a tribute to a lost friend. It's a perfect example of the artistry and musical genius of U2. The greatest rock band of my generation (GenX).

The song was penned after Bono attended the tangi (Maori funeral) of his personal assistant ,Greg Carroll who was killed in a motorcycle accident overseas.

I remember seeing the original video clip back in 1988 with the dedication when I was back home in NZ...it's a beautiful song❤

Greg had a light that shone very brightly. A most affable personality. His ambition was to make music videos. We corresponded from '84 to '86 and then the letters stopped. It would be 10 yrs before I found out about the accident. At least then, I knew why the letters had stopped.

RIP Greg Carroll For those who didn’t know, if you watch the Live Aid performance of Bad, you can see him getting the mic cord for Bono Also, this is just one of the greatest songs from them. And I love the tribute to him during the Auckland show in the Joshua Tree 2019 tour

This track has aged remarkably well. For my money it has aged better than virtually any song they ever wrote with the possible exceptions of Bad, Streets, and One. I can’t think of higher praise than that.

As a fan of U2 since late 70s I thought with the Joshua tree release I wasn't impressed but this track in memory of their fallen comrade was and is sublime. Ps I have read the story how Greg got on the U2 bandwagon. Very impressive

i hadnt heard this particular opening before, great tune this albeit it written for a great friend of Bono and the band. On Live Aid during their perf of 'Bad' Greg Carroll is the lad clearly visible a number of times extending a microphone cord when Bono takes off during the song; and getting him a microphone when he returns after the walkabout.
