Gebre Menfes Kidus agree with you! I use to listen to October all the time, IMO one of their most intriguing and unique albums. How special is Tomorrow?
heard of them the first time from an algerian friend when i was in eastleigh in 1982, loved them so much, the energy of the first records is still there!!!
When they were hungry raw revolutionary and honest , they were kids you fucking idiots , talented kids who became men who took over the world , that’s how progression works , you talk some shit .
@@mickwallace9949 That's no way to talk to someone, learn some manners, and Gebre - you are right, they had something in those early days that no other band seemed to, perhaps a determination without compromising their style, that didn't last through their whole career unfortunately, its hard to imagine they produced crap like "No line on the horizon"
I was 18 and this was my first Rock Werchter, looked forward to it for months. My girlfriend would meet me at the festival. But when we met, she broke up with me. The girl I had a crush on since I was 15 , the future mother of my unborn children, just dumped me. I walked on the festival like a zombie, couldn't get why she did it and then this concert started. Wow, this was new, excited, full of energy, unseen, the future of rock music, it made me forget my sorrows en even to this day, I will mention it as the best gig I ever saw. And for the people who like happy endings. 3 years and a few failed relationships later, that girl finally realized that it would be a good idea to be the mother of our children. 34 years later, we still go each year to Rock Werchter and I ask her every time if she plans on breaking up with me, but so far, I have been lucky.
This is one of the most interesting comments I have ever seen on a RU-vid video. It's very cool of you to share such a personal memory, and that is just the 1st paragraph. When I clicked "Read More", I was pleasantly surprised by the happy ending. At 55 years old, I feel this kind of deep personal connection to live music has been lost in the "Tweets & Likes" culture in which we now live... so nice to know that there is still someone out there who can share a story that really connects their life to a concert so long ago. 34 years together. Wow, thank you for sharing such a wonderful story.
I saw U2 on this tour on March 13, 1982 in Louisville, KY. They were the warmup band for the J Geils Band. U2 stole the show and I have been a fan ever since that concert. It took me eight months to find their albums following this concert. They were Awesome with a Capital A.
I was there, along with Simple Minds, Peter Gabriel , Van Morrison and a load of others, great two days, can’t believe how long ago this was, U2 were great back in the day, not so much now………

@@jamesadcock5235 What’s your favorite album of those irish lads?👍👊🏼 I don’t really have one particular favorite. Beside Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience i like them all. But off course Boy all through Achtung Baby i play the most!👍😃👊🏼
@@jamesadcock5235 The first 3 albums are incredible. Unforgettable Fire was great with a few klunkers, Joshua Tree is overrated. Achtung Baby sounds like it is by a different band - but it might be their best from start to finish. After that it was all downhill.
yup, it's just so stellar, the guitar work, the drums, bass, the singing, the atmosphere of the songs... to me one of the great appeals to it is the faith that pours out of those songs. In a way it is U2 at their purest, having to rely entirely on faith and belief, and they grow wings from that place to fly so high.
i feel you homey1, but thats impossible, you can strip everything down to basics yes thats true, but U2 are elderly men now- its the "youth" that made early U2 do magical shows. Its gone. just accept it , and enjoy what they are today.
My favorite U2 time (Boy/October/War). Their creativity exploded with these albums. I can't get over how young and talented they were at this point, and to have this incredible level of complexity in their music compositions. I feel lucky to have been a junior in high school in 1982 and have had all these great tunes to listen to at a point before responsibilities took over.😁👍
You were and I was too. All the kids at my Catholic school knew I loved U2 as a kid. In 7th grade we did a project on Ireland and I put the New Years Day Red Rocks video in it for everyone to watch 😂
My teenage self was obsessed with U2 ,to see this footage is so great i saw them at wembley stadium 1987 supported by spear of destiny and the pretenders
What a euphoric sound, this is just incredible! Especially considering how old it is. A Day Without Me, brand new all over again, this performance just soars!!!
@@jeffreysmith594 , it was 40 years ago. Easy to get tickets as it was a festival. I was in front row on the left the whole afternoon and evening. Great line up with Eurythmics, Simple Minds, U2 and Peter Gabriel. And for one song, Bono invited Annie Lennox and Jim Kerr to join the band. Magic.
Probably the best early footage I’ve ever seen, the sound, the stage presence , the band is tight & of course the crowd make this a gem of a archive. I saw them for the first time the following year on the WAR TOUR in Upper Darby PA . I was 17 and can still close my eyes & remember!!!!! THANKS FOR THIS 🎵🎵❤️
I was 16. It was on late night tele. Blew me away. Fan to all this 80s sound. Not so much after first 4 albums. Such a sound they had. Still have it on a VHS tape. Nothing to play it on but just can’t throw it out
The way Bono won the audience over was so sincere and so brilliant. These early songs sung live and gigs like this should be treasured in your memory. Greatness♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️👌🏻
I’ve noticed in their more recent shows that “I Will Follow” pops up early in their concerts today. For some reason I thought they were a heavy metal band in my younger years. They were not a metal band, but something far more exciting, they are U2!!
This is how I’ll always remember The Edge… amazing tone, blistering playing, just amped and relying on a simple pedal board and not a computer bank. Top 10 all-time guitarist no question.
He got known for that sound though and it's still called "the edge sound" you can't blame him for wanting to extend his palette of colours. Shame he never found a sound as good. I loved it when I heard beautiful day and heard the edge sound again. That was a great moment for U2 fans and guitarists
My God!! their stage presence is incredible and there are people who think it's an overrated band bono climbing on stage structure the Edge playing keyboards and guitar, U2 for sure the biggest band in the world
At that time they were the best band in the world. That sound is so unique. I still find the Edge to have no equal in tone and delivery. Just masterful ❤️
when U2 started flying ....rising on waves of pure positive joyful emotional currents and strong bonds created between the music and their audience ...
U2 at their magnificent best - before the adulation and the decline into MOR rock. Saw them so many times in this period, truly amazing. Boy/October/War - very few bands can claim their first three albums as good as them. For those who don’t know the tracks: I Threw A Brick A Day Without Me An Cat Dubh/ Into The Heart Rejoice Cry/ The Electric Co I Fall Down I will Follow Out Of. Control Fire
When this show was made I still had 6 years to be born, and the other day September 21, 2018, about to turn 31, I was jumping and crying while listening to this song at the Wizink Center in Madrid. This band is the best in history.
Awesome music purpose ... One single man with 6 strings, & an electric piano some times, one with 4 strings, other with a single drum kit, and another one with an unstopable energy & great voice... U2 4ever❤️‼️
39.21. Larry looks over to the right and sees the guy in red trousers jumping on stage and begins to prepare for the ensuing chaos, which is the best U2 moment to ever be put on camera.
First time seeing this concert on RU-vid. Absolutely fantastic!!! Their early sound was already so formidable and tight. LMJ has such a joy in his expressions. All of their playing is incredible. All the elements of perfect chemistry are already fully realized in this early band. Thanks for sharing. For those that have not yet gotten Surrender on Audible you are missing out. I have read or listened to probably 50 autobiographies of musicians and this is the best yet with its comprehensive content and format. Its like having an intimate sbd honest discussion with Bono along with music used to tell his story. What could be better? Well maybe the entire band but perhaps the others Will Follow.
Great post! Such fire and passion, to this day, I've never see a band have this much fun playing together. They were made to play live, the original "garage band" as Bono said during the War Tour 1983. Saw I&E tour in Boston last year. Saw them 5 times, not as many as some but toughest ticket in the world as many know. Can't wait to see them again! Thanks for the great footage!
Definitely NOT the original garage band…but the most successful and long lasting, yes. Garage bands were spontaneously springing up throughout the mid-60s onward, helping to give these 4 guys a pattern to build from starting in the late 70s.
Most of this material I've never heard. Yet every single song is a killer. Where did this fottage come from. And also take note, whoever was responsible for the camera work, was a first class live act film maker. No one in England could ever do that during the eighties,. nineties or the two thousands. And we did some work for Ross Storey in 93. I think she worked with U2 in Melbourne early 90. Fantastic video. The best I've ever seen.
Poor Iris Hewson. When I see this I think a lot about Iris Hewson. Poor Iris and what she could not see with her early death at that fateful funeral in 1974 . She never knew that the son she had was the greatest frontman of all time, with the greatest rock voice of all time and in the greatest band of all time. Even when a fortune teller told her that she would have a son and that he would be famous, she never knew that it was much more than that: she had given birth to God. Poor Iris Hewson.
