Most people don't know this, but this song was written after Bono's visit with Pope John Paul II in 1999 after he traded a pair of his sunglasses for the pope's rosary. There's a funny picture of the Pope wearing Bono's sunglasses somewhere on the Internet. Just Google it. And, of course, Bono often wears that Rosary around his neck while he performs. Anyway, the last verse, "I'm in the waiting room, I can't see through the smoke," that's an obvious reference to purgatory. Bono struggles to see the world and feel it the way the JPII did.
V Interesting. The line is 'for' though, not through. I have read too that he was writing about his wife and how struggled the see the positive things in the world the way she did. Best wishes ....
@@donny2327 "For" or "through" means the same thing in this instance. But I swear when you actually listen to the album version, he is saying "through." Plus, "you don't even sleep now do you" is a reference to a person, not a divine being. Anyway, I can understand why people who aren't comfortable with religion wouldn't want this to be a song about the Pope. But I remember in the year 2000, U2 did an interview with a radio station in Toronto, 102.1 The Edge, and in the lead up to playing this song, they were discussing Bono's visit with the Pope the previous year.

@@donny2327 Think old English. "I can't advance for there is a road block stopping me." Or "I can't see for the smoke [is stopping me from seeing]." The latter is the same as, "I can't see through the smoke."
