Honestly ANY song that Bono sings will be a lesson in delivery & enunciation. He is one of the few lead singers that can sing every word crystal clear….people know U2 lyrics because they actually hear each word. How does he do that?? I could listen to U2 music all day 😊

The best thing about the song is it sounds even better live. See the version on the rattle and hum movie. Zoo tv in Sydney and slane castle 2001. There’s also a great version when Bono sings on his back holding onto a girl from the audience, that one is from Boston 2001. Even now Bono still does a great job with the song His voice has changed over the years, started off very raw and developed by the mid 80’s to a very powerful voice (pride , with or without you etc ) then by the early 90’s he developed one hell of a falsetto ( lemon, the fly,one etc ) for me this was when he was at his best. Had so much range to his voice. Late 90’s his voice struggled abit but he got that power back in the 2000’s . I recently saw Bono on a solo show and his voice was still incredible.

Come on... Bono's voice peaked at Achtung Baby/Zooropa, then it started to get worse, always. After 2000 he started to yell when trying to hit high notes, instead of singing. Besides that his singing had become less controled, less artistic, less expressive and his virtuosity has just disappeared since 1995. I don't know why. But that's what it is. Bono by the time of Achtung Baby, he has developed as crooner. In Joshua Tree he was raw. In Achtung Baby his voice is pure art. His last great vocal performance is Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill me. After that, its just downwards. And i'm not even going to talk about live shows. I mean... Boston 2001? Do you really think his voice is that good? We should have good reference points. If we agree in Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby was his best vocal performance, then there's no way we can classify his vocals in Boston 2001 as "good".

All great performances of WOWY. Id add the Sphere shows. Sure, the visuals really take the song to another level, but I went to the show 6 times and Bono delivers. The audio alone is probably not THE best performance. However, I would add that the visuals or performance act also aided the other top examples - the under lighting from R&H, singing on his back while embracing a female audience member. But at the Sphere shows I was at Bono really nailed the emotional power... I would add that the 1-2 punch of WOWY and Beautiful Day is breathtaking.

@@nelsonramos2955 Bono’s best years were 85-95 100% his voice was exceptional on the zoo tv tour. That was the peak. But that doesn’t mean to say his voice suddenly got bad after it. Not as good 100% but still very good. Especially when you seen some of the singers from that era now. I recently saw simple minds and Jim Kerr needed a lot of backing singers with him. Bono is still very very good and can still hit a lot of the high notes His recent solo tour to promote the book was outstanding. He still has it , not what it was but still better than most frontmen around

@@christianreynolds9252 85-95 was his best 10 years for his voice. I totally agree. Luckily we have video and audio footage of his magical voice.

@@LastlyMore- I would say 1984 (The Unforgettable Fire album) until 1995 (Passengers album) was his best “tone” as a singer. The lower to mid register in particular. He could still reach the high notes after that, but no longer with that timber and tone we’d all become so accustomed to.

I've a new-found appreciation for Bono and this song, which I've always heard only in the background and not something I had actively listened to until now. Thank you for going back to shine light on this classic! 🙂

Great video thank you. Bono of course really delivered a powerhouse vocal performance here; even after all these years, the song still smolders like a banked fire. Props to the band as well - not just for the simple yet memorable baseline but also for Edge's "Infinite Guitar"; custom built for his use in the studio which had a sustainer built into it to get this unique sound. There's a Shorts clip on RU-vid from just a few years ago where Bono was talking to a Canadian radio about With or Without you. I was shocked to hear him say that they were going for a completely different sound and became so dissatisfied with how it turned out that they threw the tune in the trash bin ! It was their friend Gavin Friday who literally fished it out of the garbage, rearranged & tweaked it on his own time and brought it back to the band to try it again. In doing so, we got the song as we know it now - one of the most recognizable songs out there and U2's very first #1 hit in the US. It's funny how fate works eh? Some things were just meant to be I guess. Cheers o7

GREAT Analysis. You hit on many of the reasons I prefer Bono to other singers, some may be more technically sound, but Bono understands that emotive performance is more impactful than clean pristine hitting of notes. He naturally leans into nuance and dynamic. There is always characterization is his use fry, breathiness, gavel etc. There is dynamic even in the most somber softer verses. Many singers are clearing aiming for a clean perfect note as their primary goal. In the broader Rock n Roll world, this often comes off a clean, flat and pretty - all superficial. In fact I think the entire band plays this more from a philosophical/[ersonal approach of emotive delivery over technical prowess, not only in sound but in feel and the place they are coming from and what they want to achieve. At their start, this was probably in large part due to them not having much technical skill. However, as they grew they turned into their strength and identity, while developing their technical skill, but never placing it as a priority. For example Edge would never play a solo packed shredding or where you come away more impressed with skill, versus how good the playing enhances the song. He will go into awesome solos live, yet they always serve the song, and never approach the typical "look how great I am at guitar" musical masterbation that MANY other players go to.

U2 is more about serving the music in general, than trying to show off. Bono vocals and The Edge guitar playing speaks of it. I agree with everything you said.

Hey this was great! Can you please react to U2 “Miss Sarajevo - LIVE in Milan”.. Bono does Pavarotti’s part and it’s quite amazing. I’ve never seen anyone react to it, and it’s possibly his most powerful vocal performance ever!

YES!!! Ive viewed a handful of the Miss Sarajevo performances and Bono does a fantastic job. I was personally at a couple of shows where they performed it, and Bono and the band soared! It was a bit of a surprise, as they had not played it a the two previous shows I attended for 360

Another amazingly emotive Bono vocal is A Sort of Homecoming from the Wide Awake in America EP. I haven’t seen any other reactions to it yet, which is surprising because it has a ton of vocal technique and a beautiful uplifting ending.

👏👏👏Yes! Now that's what I'm talking about! Some good old 80's rock 'n' roll - U2 style. As you said, a great song which will stand the test of time. Juliet, this reaction wins my most enthusiastic, most enjoyed by the reactor, and best analysis award of all the YOSC reactions I have seen.🏆🥇 As for further U2 suggestions, you could try 'One' featuring Mary J. Blithe which is a 2 for 1 in terms of analysing vocals. - A Beautiful Day - just because it's an upbeat song :-) - Where the Streets Have No Name - another classic. - Early, raw Bono from 1981 - 'Fire' - Later, Zoo period, 'Mysterious Ways' Other classics that deserve a review - Queen, 'Somebody to Love', live at Montreal 1981 - a master class in vocals from Freddie and Roger -> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aA2IRoPFIn0.htmlsi=tLtZ2PoynlxdPTrc - Dire Straits - 'Brothers in Arms' - restrained vocals accompanied by an emotional guitar lead - the two combining as one 'voice'. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jhdFe3evXpk.htmlsi=uycGl_aKcHagjr75 - Kate Bush - 'Running up that Hill' - the unique Kate Bush is definitely worth analysing ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wp43OdtAAkM.htmlsi=Oq4XdILzdeGNxKBL There are plenty more... 🙂
