Wow....Christian - this is SO well done. UAD should explain this as effectively as you did. I have an x8 and a Twin X and was wondering why I kept running into issues. I thought since Luna "takes over from Console" when starting it, that I didn't have to worry what was loaded in Console. I feel like a DSP managing pro now because of your help!. Awesome content!
Thank you! On my Apollo Solo I was running channel 1 and 2 ( 2 which I almost never use) with my Avalon plugin and I was running at 98.8% I removed the Avalon on my second channel and it dropped my DSP down to 55%! I use Audition and you have saved my life! I didn't know that I hit my limit because of running my plug on both channels in while recording my audio. Thank you !
Thanks Travis! This video isn’t specifically about virtual channels but it does show how to create and use them. Check it out: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-y-Blzb1K8AA.html
Seriously this is the best!!! I’ve had my Apollo twin for over 3 years and hated everything about it because I didn’t understand this. Quick question..would you suggest running Apollo with Luna over protools to track?
Thanks Matt! Absolutely I recommend using LUNA with your Apollo for tracking as well as mixing! As a matter of fact we have a whole class on it. Check it out at Udemy: www.udemy.com/course/lunamasterclass Thanks for subscribing to our RU-vid channel and best of luck to you!
Does that explain why in my MacBook set up I hear distortion. It’s really taking the fun out of working. I tried different computers, microphones, different Apollo interfaces, even went and set up at other peoples homes and it doesn’t work. Idk why I have these issues, the distortion not heavy but it’s there compared to someone listening to my boys and we are totally confused any of your expertise.
Could you do a video on the Apollo Solo I have one just to record vocals however I can only run 2 plugins before I get DSP is there anyway around that other then buying a twin x or etc
Will console plugins use dsp from my octo card in the pc or will console only use dsp in the hardware interface? I run Apollo twin duo and an Octo card
Great video! I’m a little confused about saving console projects though. For example to load different songs with different plug-ins For live streaming purposes etc. Are you saying that every project that I save in console even though I’m not using those plug-ins at the moment they’re still taking up DSP whether they’re opened or closed? That’s what seems so great about console let’s say I’m doing a eight song Setlist live I can recall all their settings, but obviously I wouldn’t be able to do that if they’re using up DSP.
My quad does not work with my new motherboard. Any way it can be resolved? UAD said"what do you expect you have had it for 8 years. Not happy with that, or cost me a lot of money
I’m curious to know what DAW do you use? I ask because im puzzled why so many are using UA’s hardware instead of the Pro Tools Carbon. Although the Carbon won’t load up UA’s plug ins, it begs the question if those UA plug ins are really that good. I have the Apollo Twin Quad Core, it’s a masterpiece, but I had to get the Carbon because I do techno which widens the stereo field, the reverb is there, so is the delay among other effects. By the way, if I can download a similar sheet for plug ins that come with Pro Tools that’d be an early Christmas for me 😁
Hey Rey, thanks for the comment! I use UAD LUNA mostly now with my Apollo Hardware. I haven't had experience with Carbon so I can't really say which is better. I don't see any reason why LUNA wouldn't also be suitable for techno. No Windows version of LUNA as of yet though if that is what you are using.
Great video! Thanks! Maybe you can make also a video related to Luna Error Messages(?). For example, for whatever reason … I get many times the Luna Error Code -38 (which means that Universal Audio Hardware or UAD PlugIns stopped responding). I already checked all available material online … but … so far … I was not able to resolve this issue …
Greetings. I having a similar issue. I have an Apollo Twin X and A Satellite but it only using the dsp on the Apollo while satellite remain untouched then It saying not enough dsp. i'm using it in Studio one.
I don’t even use Console honestly. I keep loading these plugins (aka channel strip) in my DAW on multiple channels like an idiot. I should just be using it in Console (pre DAW) right?
Kind of depends. If you're doing a bunch of vocal takes and you want the same pre-amp sound on all of them, it would make sense to do each take through a single channel in Console that has the same plugin effecting each vocal take the same way. That way, when you start mixing things in the DAW you already have the starting point you want for each track w/o having to load a UAD plugin on to every track. That's going to be CPU intensive. However, if you don't know exactly what the end goal is sonically or you want to preserve the take exactly as it was recorded, you'd leave the plugins off Console and start adding them in on your DAW. At this point, you have to start being more mindful of the DSP usage again because even though it's not happening real-time through a line into Console, UAD is trying to process it in real time in your DAW and you'll still have DSP limitations. So, if you're putting the same Channel Strip on multiple tracks with identical settings, it would probably make more sense to add that to Console and do each take through that channel. If you want a variety of plugins running or altered parameters between tracks, you may want to use a combination of Console plugins & DAW plugins. Comes down to the desired sound and the best workflow to achieve it!
If I want to use a pair of headphones that doesn’t have the traditional, plug, Which adapter would I use Also which pair of headphones that run at $100 that comes stock with the Apollo plug I don’t want to sacrifice any audio quality when monitoring due to the adapter please let me know of any suggestions
You should be able to use any of the plugins but you may have to be mindful of what plugin combinations you try running. Any single plugin will be fine (reference the spreadsheet - none of them would overwhelm a single plugin), but chaining multiple CPU-hungry plugins may result in the 'Plugin Disabled' popup
What about when you load a UA plugin on a track in Protools? Doesn't the DAW run it on your computer power instead? Does loading a UA plugin on a track in your DAW use up your DSP on your UA interface?
Shah what mic are you using? I’m not sure which one I was using in this video I have a couple. Honestly they are quite cheap one is a Shure SM57 other is a condenser mic TZ Audio Stellar X2. I can get similar results from both though. The most important thing is room treatment and getting your room as quiet as possible. Get the mic the proper distance from the source. Make sure your gain is good and you aren’t recording too hot into your Apollo. Use a good UAD preamp and check the gain is at a healthy level and not in the red when you are speaking or singing. Finally I use RX8 or the new UAD C-Vox noise reduction plugin to remove room noise. Hope this helps!
Thanks for helping out with this really confusing stuff. UA should offer you a job. I have an Apollo Twin X Thunderbolt and I need more DSP. What's the most economical way to get more? Thanks!
Pip thanks so much! 😊 As for adding more DSP.. Do you have the Twin duo or quad? Probably the best bet would be to find a UAD satellite. You can add an additional 4 DSP chips with a quad satellite. You can buy one brand new or check Ebay and Reberb.com if you are looking for a used deal. Hope that helps!
And, I have one other question related to Luna: I noticed that the routing changes when I use ARM during recording. But, not only my input channel gets automatically routed to MAIN directly (when ARM is enabled there) … even the recorded music so far … sounds somehow little bit different (whenever ARM is active). But, that’s something I actually don’t like. I would prefer it to have everything sound as always - no matter if ARM is enabled or disabled. Any ideas / suggestions here? Thx
