It's incorrect that the speed is the same. EPON is only capable of a share capacity on a PON of 1Gb\1Gb speeds most likely why your OLT is like that. Gpon uses SDH\Sonet type framing for a 2.5Gb\1.25Gb on a PON Also GPON allows for other waves to ride on the same fiber like 1550-1650nm for example.
The maximum speed that we offer is 1GB up and 1GB down. Gpon or Epon share the bandwidth delivered by the PON. In an Epon you can't exceed 128 connection max per PON. As for Gpon you can reach 256 connections per PON. None of these numbers are realistic because of the sharing phenomena. Also OLT PON delivers a little more power C+++ than the Gpon PON C+. To me the end results are the same. And that's what matters. As far as I can see. I did a lab test that shows the results.
Did not try it. But I don't think the OLT will recognize other GPONs models. But you can use the fiber module if you have a SFP wan router. But again the module needs to be adopted first . @95% the answer is NO. Hope this helps.
