Ubisoft Issues An Apology For Assassin's Creed Shadows | Let's Discuss 

If in a scenario where Japan at large rejects this game - imagine how that negative PR can impact sales if the very country it's trying to "represent" says its an insult to them and their culture. This is why Ubi is scrambling to try and calm them down right now.

I think what most ppl fail to realize is that while there are a lot of us on the internet a lot of ppl aren’t. I wouldn’t be shocked if there is a large part of the fan base that doesn’t even know any of this is going on. Those are the sales that won’t be affected. Same thing happened with Hogwarts and last of us 2. Internet said one thing and numbers said something differently.

I don’t know if I should say this or not, but I don’t really care about this controversy. I never cared about “muh historical accuracy” in games and I never went to AC for that anyway. With that being said I’m just wondering if it’s going to be a good game or not. I mean Yasuke seems cool and Naoe’s gameplay seems like it’s going back to AC’s stealth roots and a lot of it gives me Splinter Cell vibes. I guess we’ll see when it comes out.

just remember that a lot of the non japanese people upset at this were very vocal during hogwarts legacy’s build up…funny. for any japanese individuals upset, I hope ubisoft does them justice. at the end of the day this is a video game, ubisoft has always jumbled history, more people live offline than fully online.

It's just an odd and ambiguous choice for a Japanese historical figure. It's like Elon Musk as an African American cultural hero.

I'm gonna be honest, I don't care about this game. LOL No matter what I do in this game I know I'll have to do it 500x to get anything that can be considered a tiny little reward and god forbit if I want a new outfit, that can only be earned through my credit card.

Ubisoft was so invested in accurately portraying Japan that they emblazened the crest of Toyotomi Hideyoshi on the armor that Yasuke supposedly got from Nobunaga Oda. This would be like celebrating Pride month by marching through the streets in pointy bed sheets and the Confederate Flag.

I think the game will sell well regardless of the controversy. Every other year an ac game releases I see a group of people saying AC is dead or it’s going to flop and it literally never does lmao. Hell countless people said Valhalla was terrible but it had 20 million plus players and sold very well. The people on Twitter and RU-vid are only a small fraction compared to the rest of the world

This gives me the impression that Ubisoft truly is concerned about this game not doing well. If the pre-orders and positive feedback were greatly outpacing the negative, i don't think they would have bothered to apologize. They're trying to save face to avoid another triple A flop IMO.

Yasuke doesnt have a family name, he didnt pay taxes to his lord, like all samurai did, and his name wasnt writen in the Daimyoki, in which ALL samurai names were writen. Yasuke was not a samurai. A retainer, maybe, like an ashigaru, but not a samurai

They essentially did the same thing to the english in 2020, with valhalla. Eivor is a historical invader and oppressor, and they go across England killing english people and being racist to them. Major english historical figures like Alefred the great are villains, yet invaders are good guys? Right... moreover, eivor even says at one point "I'll not rest until there is not one saxon left in England." That's racist and stealing someone's home. It's insulting to the modern english as well. And it didn't even make sense, as eivor has friends who are anglo saxons.

Ubisoft and Thomas Lockley picked the wrong country to try and defraud. Japan doesn't play around.

Whenever you launch an AC game it always says "Inspired by Historical events and characters. This work of Fiction was designed by a multicultural team of various religions and faith." Literally says Fiction. So if people are complaining about that are extremely dumb imo. AC is a Video Game with some Real characters most are Fake. This game has God's in it for ffs like it's an Imaginary universe. The people think it's a Race thing are just grasping at straws. I bought Every AC game including the Handhelds and Side Scrollers. I'm still getting it regardless of the haters.

All press is good press. With all the talk around this game, I planned gettin it also to see what it’s about gameplay wise.

Why are they even apologizing, it makes no sense lol. I think it was a weird direction to take the game but you can't judge it until it comes out.

If you want something historically watch a documentary instead of playing a video game. AC lore is literally science fiction based

I could imagine the game sells less at the start, but after a few months or a year the sales pick up a bit. Probably something like with HL when people were trying to stop people buying or streaming the game - some bought it early anyway and some bought it after a while and the heat went away. I have played all AC console games, and I am fully aware they are not true stories or actual events. I like the AC games because of the worlds/themes they drop you in to and the characters are interesting. They do put historical people in to their games, but usually as a npc. Without playing the game it's not possible to know how any of the characters are portrayed

I agree with some of what you said Alex, but I just want to clarify some things from my perspective, which might help other people inform their opinions. First, yes, people should be allowed creative liberties, and yes Assassin's Creed has always been historical fiction. Part of the problem with this game though, is that Ubisoft previously tried to market the historical accuracy and said in interviews that they wanted people to learn about the history of this time period in Japan while playing the game. But now that the Japanese community (and also a lot of westerners, true) called them out for poor research and literally stealing stuff from other countries as well as other existing IPs (Chinese buildings and language, Sekigahara rifle corps flag, and the One Piece sword) now they choose to market it as purely historical fiction. That's scummy. Also, I realize not everyone is as up-to-date on all this stuff or just don't care, but that is also kind of an issue. People who don't look at this stuff prior to buying the game are going to either: a) take it as historical fiction which is awesome b) find it interesting enough to research the real history of the time period c) take it at face value and believe Yasuke was a Samurai Sure, while the first two are more common, the last one creates a big problem for Japan, especially when it comes to children who are more easily influenced by popular culture and media. Sure, if it pushes people to learn about the story thats great, but then we can't keep having people claim that the version in the game is based on truth, when a lot of Japanese and Japanese historians find it disrespectful to elevate Yasuke to the rank of Samurai. Whether "Samurai" just meant skilled warrior of a higher rank, or was something more akin to a feudal lord, the (unaffiliated) historians of the culture that the story is from are telling us that neither was true, rather he was most likely a skilled mercenary retainer who Nobunaga valued very highly. And since I know it will come up, yes I am one of the white guys, but no I'm not mad about the game, actually it just depresses me. I have waited for so long for an AC game in feudal Japan, and I don't mind Yasuke and Naoe as characters, but I do understand where the Japanese gamers are coming from, and Ubisoft as a French, predominantly white, game developer, hurts white and black people more overall because it is racist to push this false narrative and then get upset at the asian fanbase for not accepting a rewriting of their history. It hurts my credibility as a regular human being because it just lends credence to the stereotype that all white people are racist, bigoted assholes.

This is exactly why I HATE modern gaming people want games that are different but you can't use someone who is not Japanese litterally laughable

Imagine if AC3 came out today, with it criticizing the Founding Fathers the way it does, Shaun's speeches and emails and the DLC. Shadows looks like a baby compared to the storm that would have been.

Japanese gamers nowadays don't buy games that are not on switch so. I mean, the games sales will be like less than 10 percent from Japan

I hope that game fails and consequently its publisher. Imagine getting the Fleur de Lis wrong and inverting it. That's what Ubi did with the clan symbols on AC Shadows. What a scum company.

Ppl need better time management if they get this angry at a game Similar to bayek, any records of yasukes time could’ve been erased as an in lore reason y we don’t know anything about him. He could be the type that wants to disappear from history. Even Vidic from the FIRST game challenges the history we learned in a “text book” we see history how it “actually happened” thru the animus. This "apologie" is complete BS. The CEO of ubisoft and developers of the game have already shown and caught talking down on the people and fans who don't like what they're doing with the game. So yeah in some cases, I agree with some people saying that they shouldn't came out with this apology. Because it makes them look desperate. And not actually being genuine about it.

To be honest, a black main character in Assassin's Creed is the reason why I'm interested in buying and playing an Assassin's Creed game. All the other games weren't that appealing or fun to me like that. So, they made a very good move with this new game.

Gotta say this year 2024 is a BIG year for Ubisoft because there's 6 awesome Ubisoft games Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, Battle Core Arena, Beyond Good & Evil 20th Anniiversary Edition, Star Wars Outlaws and Assassin's Creed Shadows defienitily Prince of Persia The Lost Crown and Beyond Good & Evil are 2 my favourite and the best Ubisoft games of 2024 it's so good to be Ubisoft fan! For me it dosen't matter is one of the main character in AC Shadows black or white, I don't care about that because I'll allow every kind of people and LOVE how video games tries to bring black people in games too that is risky, but brave plan from Ubisoft I'll give sorry for they, but feel bad for some peopoe. About of Ubisoft's other games there's one game what I really hope it's comeback and that is Rayman, it would be so nice to get a new Rayman game defienitily new 3D Rayman would be awesome to see pls Ubisoft don't forget Rayman after Mario and Rabbits Sparks of Hope, it's so good to be Ubisoft fan today! 😊❤

Recorded history is never always completely factual in itself anyway plus people take every book and article and assume it’s fact because it’s “historical literature “ ghost of Tsushima is not even historically accurate. Plus countries like Japan that are homogeneous have colorism ideology (due to early western influence) people with lighter skin are seen as perfect and rich and dark skin is seen as less than and poor so would they be mad at a yt protagonists?.
