The fresh food hanging about the ship as it leaves is historical. I had a Nazi Uboat navigator as a landlord while stationed in Germany in 80's. He said the boat was packed full with meat, eggs, whatever but, towards the end of the cruise... they were down to powdered milk, eggs and salted beef. Lets check it out a bit more, I'm watching it closely myself for purchase.
Hilbert Kohler later retired from the kriegsmarine before the end of the war and put his valve-turning experience to good use, opening up a plumbing repair shop and eventually manufactured faucets. 😜
You sound like a professional announcer calling a game. You are careful, articulate and very clear with your words. I enjoyed every minute of this and mostly because of your ability to state the facts, your honest inpressions all while leaving any personal gripes at the door. Great job.
@@thegeneralissimo470 Thats just a nice side effect. Blue indicates for every sailor on the boat to be as quiet as they can be or they will be targeted and die. Less talking, less oxygen cinsumption. Red is night view not battle stations. You can use red light without raising an alarm.
That is by far the best Submarine movie ever. Red October is a close second, but Cold War era Sub movies are a different animal than the nail biting fear laden WW2 sub genre. Both are interesting for different reasons. On the other end of the spectrum is Crimson Tide. All very different films.
some of the Kickstarter backers have in the last weeks been steaming the game and its been a running joke that the cook always get shot on every patrol :D
This was very fun to watch. All the mechanical challenges, optimal use of cramped space, you could imagine smelling the sweat, seawater, grease, and the ham hanging in the control room. As realistic as can be for today's games.
Illustrious and other carriers in her class had some pretty mean secondary, be fun to fight her in a gun deul, tho the submarine would lose. I tried in atlantic fleet and its really interesting.
Correct: The smiling sawfish was the famous insignia of Heinrich Lehmann-Willembrock’s U-96. But after her 4th patrol, it was ordered to clean the turret and repanting it with Prien’s snorting bull. As the sawfish was painted in February 1941 and deleted after the Summer 1941, I bet the patrol you are playing is the 4th one of the U-96 under Lehmann-W’s command, between April the 12th and May 22nd, 1941. That’s why your crew are still wearing coats while waiting you staring in the Dock
People often though of a uboat as a submarine vessel, but originally it was designed as a surface ship with abillity to get submerged and stay underwater for about 12 to 14 hours. Design and shape of the hull is much more appreciated for the surface cruise use than for underwater propelling. Nevertheless, at the crack of the atomic dawn, US techicians and engeneers invented the Albacore like hull shape. The shape was intended mostly for underwater cruise, rather than the surface cruising. Awsome video, by the way.
Well maybe not exactly like Master as it's fiction and there was no French ship like that in real life but definitely something where you're either a crewman or the captain on board a tall ship and have to fight in battles, such as the Battle of Trafalgar or the Battle of the Nile.
After you fire torpedos at a task force always go to persicope depth and run silent so your ready to avoid any destroyers in the group, had to learn that one the hard way playing silent hunter, also use steam torps at night and electric during the day the steam ones give off bubbles and theyll see the trail and try to evade em
"NO to *BACON??? FLOG HIM* Now cook up half kilo BACON and EGGS...OE... *8 TUBES FORWARD?? (8 TUBES?? MY BAD) HOLY MOLY GLOCKAMOLEY!!! **24:40** 4 FISH 4 HITS!! CONGRATS SKIPPER!!*
Ive been inside a U-boat and it looks exactly like it did. The U-boat was a real one stolen by the US Navy during WWII, it was put in a Museum in Chicago, you can see it yourself if youre interested in subs/WWII, it was crazy!
Re the bacon, at Jutland the Seydlitz was almost lost so the captain ordered fresh bread be baked. The ship was in a parlous state. Wafting fresh bread aromas inspired the crew to work harder to save their ship and it worked! Never underestimate morale (or bacon).
The sinking feeling in your stomach when the officer says "torpedo missed"... then the huge adrenaline and excitement going up inside your chest as you hear an explosion chained after other.
The U-505 exhibit in Chicago is really neat. I thought I knew my U-Boats until I saw the glowing pipes in the dark. I guess they painted them in some sort of light soaking material that would glow when the lights were switched off during ultra quiet.
At [4:55]. The •speeds/▪options on the Wählscheibe (the green thing with the lever below the menu button) are from left to right: {Voraus} ({Forward}) • Äußerste Kraft (emergency speed) • Große Fahrt/Volle Kraft (ahead full) • Halbe Fahrt/Kraft (ahead half) • Langsame Fahrt (ahead slow) ^^used at [4:55]^^ • Kleine/Langsamste Fahrt (ahead slowest) ▪Dieselmotor (diesel engine) ▪Achtung (attention) • Stopp/Maschinen halt (engines stop) ▪Elektro-Maschinen (electric motors) ▪Beide Maschinen 10 weniger (both engines 10(%, I guess) less) ▪Laden (charge (the electric motors)) {Zurück} ({reverse}) • Kleine/Langsamste Fahrt (reverse slowest) • Langsame Fahrt (reverse slow) • Halbe Fahrt/Kraft (reverse half) • Äußerste Kraft (emergency reverse) And both • Kleine/Langsamste Fahrt voraus (ahead slowest) and • Kleine/Langsamste Fahrt zurück (reverse slowest) can be called ''Schleichfahrt'' (stealth mode), I believe, since ''Schleichfahrt'' itself isn't listed on the Wählscheibe. Hopefully I could help some people with this little translation and explanation. But if you have some corrections or something to add, just reply to this comment. Sincerely, a friendly PzKw. IV Ausf. Nop, red light is used for combat patrol or kodak mode patrol. Blue lights show you that it's night time outside in a vessel with no windows. The red light is also used when may have to vacate the vessel in night time to not disturb your night sight.
they should use this engine keep it first person view scrap all the pointless tasks like sweeping etc.. it would be a great game playing just a captain and not a god
@raptor potentially a bit late. But about the reported misses: the game is somewhat realistic in the longer you "target" your victim, the more accurate you get with it's position, bearing and speed. When firing a torpedo, the countdown is based on the assumed distance to target and the officer correctly calls misses if the torpedo does not hit in the time it would need to cover it. If the assumed distance is less then the real distance to the target, then the torpedo(s) will hit after the time passed ... and therefor after the officer called them misses. That's why all 4 torpedo's hit dispite the officer calling 3 or 4 misses shortly before.
Much as this is a very nice looking game, I do kind of miss the variety offered by older U boat games like SH3 that let you choose different types of U boat. The epic odesy length voyages you could run in Type IXs, or the stealthy harbour raids you could pull off in the little type II were fun alternate play styles from the classic Type VII C
A short note. Submarines are referred to as boats. Blue lights were used on ships and boats (submarines) during WW2 to preserve night vision. Red lights did not come into use until much later.
Serious question here, would they actually cut the rope of a diver in that situation during ww2??, that seems like something only crazy person would sign up for, imagine being that diver though, just being left at the bottom of the ocean floor while your boys drive off
The telegraph at 04:43 says "Langs. Fahrt", but "Langs." is an abbreviation. It says "Langsam Fahrt" which litterally translates to "slow speed". The marker above it says "Halbe Fahrt" ("half speed") and the one below says "Kleine Fahrt" (litterally translates to "small speed" - in English subs you would probably have it labelled "dead slow"). The greyed out markings at the top left says "Grosse Fahrt" (litterally translates to "big speed" = "top (marching) speed") and "Äusserste Fahrt" means "Outmost speed" ("Full power") or just "Let's haul ass out of here...". I can't read the greyed out markings on the right side of the telegraph, but the red markers refer to maneuvering in reverse ("Zurück" means "Reverse"). "Laden" means "charge" as in "charge the batteries".
sehr gut gemacht. Ich habe U995 mehrfach besichtigt und Führungen gemacht. Ich muss sagen das Spiel hat eine ausgezeichnete Grafik. toll gemacht Bravo Charli
I would suspect three crew to one bunk if properly hot bunking, six four hour watches per day. Not sure how anyone can survive that, but apparently they did.4 hours on station, 4 hours "free time" (ie physical training, taking care of personal equipment, general cleaning and reading for promotions).
It said heating the torpedo's lowered the risk of a dud. it gave an option to heat them I think it would have been better if firing any torpedo. I've got to buy this game it's awesome. I don't like having to be on deck to get a shooting solution but still awesome game.
"The only drawback is you have to wait for people to move around..." Um, yeah, didn't you want realistic? Silly thing to say in the middle of a tight submarine.
Other ranks slept on the floor of the torpedo room at the bow. That's most of the men. The bunks you show were for the officers and non-comms. When going out of port, obviously the floor of the torpedo room and all the racks up the sides were full of torpedos, obviously with the fuses out they were not that dangerous, but the men had to sleep on top of them. It's all in books like Das Boot or online articles. No one ever thinks of those poor bastards having to do that. They were also coastal submarines pressed into deepwater service. You should've had the sleeping guy arrested, this is the Kriegsmarine, not a holiday camp, men's lives depend on him.
I have never used the AA guns. But when you get the snorkel then you basically stay under water when you feel aircraft may find you or you pick up propeller noise.
I can not imagine anything more scary than being at war and being in or on a boat in the ocean never knowing which moment could be your last and worse when the boat sinks you have sharks and drowning to contend with.
I'm glad your taking a look at this I was a big Silent Hunter fan had and played a lot of the games but could not stand the idea of forced multiplayer when those came out prefer single player games to avoid the attitudes most have now a days. So thanks for the preview and helping me deiced if I would enjoy getting into this new U-boat game! But you like speeding up things a lot more than I do I enjoy taking my time and being thorough in my exploration of things in a game and experiencing all it has to offer once I'm in an area of operation. I know your trying to keep people interested and might play differently when not doing a video but I wouldn't mind seeing all it has to offer personally.
i like the blue light tbh it's a bit of a change of aesthetics from the boring red light. not everything has to be 100% historically accurate, artistic license trumps over realism
Despite all the bugs I’m loving this game, it’s a real challenge, got saves in port only, just experienced my first aircraft carrier, spent 2 whole real hours going the long way around Britain and Ireland to get to a port in Germany for a mission, 700km from my final destination suddenly I ran into a carrier and then dozens of planes above me, I came under fire as I dived, don’t know weather it was from ships or the planes but definitely was not depth charges, seemed like it was shells from ships or ordinary bombs from the planes if such things exist in the game, got hit as I dived, damaged to contain the damage away from any vital systems and began repairing my ship, some dumb ass AI sailor opened a door while I wasn’t looking and caused my entire crew to die. Totally preventable deaths but since I wasn’t paying enough attention to the “safe” parts of the ship I failed. Now to restart from last save 😂
Killer Fish Studios' Atlantic Fleet has Allied destroyers armed with Hedgehog bomb launchers. If you score a hit on an Axis sub with it, at any depth, it's instakill.
The Germans sent all the parts to restore her to original condition free of charge along with a letters "We are sorry that you have our U-boat, but since she's going to be there for many years, we want her to be a credit to German technology." I went and saw it years ago asked tons of questions, she's still Seaworthy to run above water and 1 of the 3 fully intact U-Boats you can visit
This looks a lot like it would have been "Silent Hunter 6" which previous versions of the game "Silent Hunter" were all excellent! Can't wait to get this game thanks for the view...
Oh boi i thought this game looks fun but it wasn't going to be the Silent hunter spiritual successor i was hoping for, but now that i know that it can be played in FPP in its entirety i'm over the moon
i agree, always wanted Silent hunter to include Destroyers and Battleships. Perhaps these developers will one day expand the game to include at least Destroyer crew management?...
I agree. For me, modded SH5 is significantly better than uboat (but that's because of my realism boner I guess). But all this crew management might be very suitable for larger ships.
I already would recommend this game, bought it early on and it is really fun! There is a little polishing that the devs need to sort but I'm already enjoying it a lot!
