Ubon RTAFB Flightline

This is a film of the dedicated USAF members of the famed 8th Tactical Fighter Wing (TFW) keeping the F-4 Phantoms flying their missions during the Vietnam War.
Then 25yr old Crew Chief SSgt Lani Duquette took his Kodak Super 8mm film camera along one day and made a remarkable Day In The Life, Behind The Scenes film of what these flight line men do to "keep 'em flying"
All who served at Ubon from 1965-1974 are a special "Band of Brothers."

The full name of this location is Ubon Rachathani. There are many Americans still living in this ring-road structured city not far from the Mekong River. There are many nice people that live in this Lao-Thai area. There is an excellent bakery on the south side of town, and there is a lot of young people owning businesses there and they have an amazing wax carving event every where where they build huge wax structures and have a parade in the streets. Shopping mall is adjacent to the Sunny Grand Hotel and British Walmart (Big C) has invaded to push all the farmers back to their farms...i joke, but its true. Oh, also, very very ironically there is ONE mexican restaurant there and its very very excellent, their echillada with moie sauce was amazing, very unexpected! Seriously, when you have been in asia for months and months and you are dying for anything else that doesnt taste like asian food....omg...there are very many surprising things like this in Thailand.

Was at Ubon from August 12th, 1969, to August 28 1970, spent many a night pulling security duties around the flight line, worse post was sitting in guard tower at the bomb dump, always something going at night, didn't get to sit around much. except for the tower or sitting in a bunker. Many lonely nights, just waiting for something to happen.

The opening scene showing F4E's with an SA tail designator is of the arrival of the 334th TFS Fighting Eagles from the 4th TFW out of Seymour Johnson AFB, N. Carolina. The 334th is the descendant squadron from the Eagle Squadron of American pilots that volunteered to fly for England before the US entered WWII. Along with the 335th TFS "the Chiefs" we deployed as part of Operation Linebacker that resulted from N. Vietnam coming south across the DMZ in spring of 1972. As Flightline Maintenace Officer I arrived a day later because I wac OIC of an enroute support team for the F4's..

I was stationed at Ubon, first F-4C Squd. on the new base Oct. 1965, 431st TFS, Red Deviles. I was an E-5 and Crew Chief. Had the privelage of a back seat ride, FCF, clean Acft, for flight controls repair, pilot really put the plane through every thing it would have to do in aerial combat, my head was in my lap many times, went so high the sky was turning dark blue as was my face, someon should have warned me not eat lunch, my oxygen mask wasn't a good barf bag.Total embarrassment. I have many pictures and memories from this tour. USAF, 1961-1969, J43171C, E-6

Intel E-4 at Udorn 70 -72. At the time, any filming on the flight line was strictly forbidden. This piece would have been classified at least confidential. I knew guys who were hauled off by the SPs for having cameras even close to the flight line. Much of this material was later (10 -15 yrs) declassified. I'm still amazed at seeing this so many years later.

I was at Ubon In Feb of 1969 TDY from Korat while our runway was being repaved. I was a 462 with the 469th TFS. We brought the F4-E's from Eglin. At that time our weapon teams were not integrated with MMS. There was no preload either 15 500 pounders one at a time. When we first got to Korat in November we put on 18 750's. That didn't last very long. Then it became 18 500 pounders and finally 15 with 10 on outboards and 3 on right inboard TER and 2 on the left to make room for the ECM pod. I think I see a few F4-D's that came from the 25TFS from Eglin as they were the group that tested the smart bombs.

they are so many F-4 Phantom ll, in all different variants that has been station in the former U.S Clark Air Base in the Philippines until the base has finally deactivated in 1992. still just wondering why the Philippine government administration during that time, didnt comprehend nor even tried, to possibly make an agreement to transfer those remaining number of units of those Phantoms, to the Philippines as a token of friendship between the two countries, at least for this reason. my point is, those said Phantoms are no longer useful to the U.S service anymore after its last tour of duty, during the 1991 Gulf War in Kuwait, against the Iraqi invasion of the said country. since then, the successor of the Phantom, such as the F-16, F/A-18, the F-14, the F-15, and even the A-10, are all fully operational in the U.S service. and the F-4 was no longer needed, except turning them into a unmanned target drone.

Nice video, I have some B/W pics and a few slides, no movies. I was in the MMS at this time. I remember 794 coming back from that mission. The day the Phantom blew a tire on takeoff and burnt on the runway. A day when another load crew blew the centerline tank and 2 AIM 7's off in the revetment just across and over one from our crew. (Which WE got to cleanup after.) Aim 7 guidance motor activated during taxi out to EOR. Sapper caught heading for Specter area. Greeting a Very Pissed Off Marine Col in the transit area with hung ordinance. (expended ejector carts on TER and the whole left wing. Said it flew like a pig all the way back.) Working 7 12's for the 1st 2 months on base then back at it for Linebacker and during the Bien Hoa "turnarounds". Spent lots of sweaty wet and rainy wet hours on that flightline. Bob Hope Show. I was the Admin Officer for the 8Th TFW Field Maint Sq the whole year of 1970, and the Orderly Rm area where my office was, is in a Bldg just a bit away from where that whole line of revetments were. I had to laugh at some of the airmen with their hand over their ears, and all those big ole J-79 engines were doing at that point were "idling". They were pretty much unbearable when four of them would take off, and their after-burners would kick in. On the 4th day I got there, we got hit with a sapper attack; they were after the AC-130 Gunships...if that all surprises anyone, Google it.
