Ubuntu 24.04 vs Fedora 40: Side by Side Showdown! 

this was more of a comparison between the two gnome versions of each distro, not the distro itself. it still was interesting though. i'm neither an ubuntu nor a fedora user and i don't use gnome at all, so i'm happy to not need to decide between these two options :) but if i had to i would nowadays clearly go with fedora

I would pick Fedora because Ubuntu has to many bugs. You should compare them again after the Ubuntu point release when the bugs are squatted, but by then Fedora has changed too.

Yeah...I tried both Ubuntu 24.04 and Fedora 40 on my laptop and snaps has ruined Ubuntu. I've had no issues with Fedora. Updates work, all of my extensions work, etc.

Fedora 40 Gnome on desktop- beautiful. Ubuntu 24.04 on laptop awesome on 240hz -runs better. Both incredible. No Ai scans. I'm back!

Fedora is the better choice.

You missed the change in the default Ubuntu install, now the default install is the old minimal install, while extended install is the old default install with all the applications pre-installed. A comparison based on real hardware in only fair, if you use the same hardware. The OS running on the newest HW will have a disadvantage with respect to HW related bugs. With the modern hypervisors it is more fair to use a VM, unless you want to test gaming performance and in that case you surely need to test on the same HW. The Ubuntu "Software Updater" does not really update snaps, despite that it promises it, so afterwards I always run "snap refresh" in the terminal to get all snaps updated. That avoided the stupid problem with the App Center, it is faster, it works on my other distros with snaps and it shows the progress of the snap updates.

I used to use Ubuntu, but always found I was always applying fixes all the time. Fedora has been solid been using not for the past 3 years and never had an issue. Solid and more refined

I'd go with Ubuntu because technically they do Gnome the best with their accent color choices, sane defaults, extra features and their exclusive triple buffering vsync support that makes it a buttery smooth vsynced experience. Gnome without triple buffering can be a stuttery and low framerate mess, especially on low-end hardware, not so on Ubuntu though. Ubuntu is also easier when installing proprietary drivers, because it gets done automatically during the installation - or - post installation via two or three clicks. Ubuntu has more options enabled within Gnome too, whether that's app indicators or an actual taskbar that can be configured to your desire. I could go on and on - it's the small details that make it superior. In addition, I don't like how Red Hat has spoken about open source and how they actually feel about it in the past.

I am running both on my desktop on their own ssd's and both work nicely. However I agree with your comments about Fedora being better out of the box.The one problem I have with Ubuntu is the cog wheel on login for switching between X11 and Wayland is missing. The cog wheel is there if I run Ubuntu on my old laptop though but then the app-store will not boot on that one. Definitely a few bugs with Ubuntu's new release.

Interesting comparison. I'm learning development, and searching which distro to switch from Windows. I think I'll go for Fedora, since I want a simple work out of the box. There's always a future opportunity to try out other distros, ofc.. Thanks!

install gnome tweaks & you get better look than ubuntu some bing wallpapers or other dynamic one thing in PROS for Ubuntu -- it`s unique installer. Fedora uses standart "anaconda" wich is same in a lot of other distribution, not bad (have some issues with locales & timezones in some other distros & mine prefer is Fedora`s installer, cause i`m from Ukraine and don`t want russian locales or bellarussian timezones)

Can you check that Android Studio works on Fedora including emulators? Emulators is my major pain, since bring CPU to 100%.

Tried fedora many times and never enjoyed it. Things didnt work, graphical glitches and lots of errors.

I have a Dell Precision creator's laptop which I started out using Fedora so I would have the latest Plasma. When 6 plasma came out Fedora chose to focus on Wayland. A couple of my apps just don't play well with Wayland. As human desire would have it I really wanted to keep plasma 6 which Ubuntu/Kubuntu do not have. So the next best thing I found was Tuxedo OS 3. Love it because it has plasma 6, still has X11 and Ubuntu stability. Ubuntu collaborates with Dell so I find it keeps up with Fedora in every way for drivers, BIOS updates, install etc. It excels beyond many distros in this same regards. Personally I find the Ubuntu community more congenial than Fedora which is deeply appreciated when I so something embarrassing. However that said Fedora community is much better place than ARCH community. Burrr, chills my spine just to type that name.

No meu pc ambos rodam bem, mas no Fedora tenho pequenos bugs de áudio as vezes atrasos no Chrome por exemplo, no Ubuntu tudo funciona perfeitamente então acabo optando por ele, o dnf também é meio lento oque me incomoda as vezes.

I was enjoying Fedora 39 since the start of the year, when I tried upgrading to 40, it blew up in my face. My install became unusable. Fortunately I had everything backed up. Now I'm on Zorin, it's ok.

Major difference between the two is Ubuntu is for newbies while Fedora requires some Linux knowledge and the only common thing between them is the Gnome Desktop.

Tried Fedora. Even with default partition install as recommended for dual boot, Fedora nuked Windows in grub and uefi. Could not recover Windows at all. Ubuntu did dual boot with no problem. Going back to Ubuntu with vanilla Gnome, basically same look as Fedora.

Does Fedora still require a separate /boot partition when I dual boot windows? First time I tried to manually set up partitions it does not allow me to use just a /boot/efi partition

Neither can do fractional scaling properly. Multiple monitors - don't bother. The Fedora KDE 6 version is perfect.
