The quality of this tutorial is absolutely incredible. It deals with absolutely all the doubts that arise to me and not only that, in addition, it draws attention to things in which I had not even proposed. The truth is that at this very moment, I am setting up an Ubuntu server and suffering from the lack of knowledge and its consequences and in view of this tutorial, I think that the best thing is going to be, starting from scratch with a better base and avoiding constant missteps that I am experiencing. Thank you very much for sharing your valuable experience and your excellent organization of the topics and, above all, the empathy that you show towards users who, like me, face the arduous task of configuring a system of these characteristics and that Gordian knot that makes us learn. and understand painfully, that in Unix, it is easier to solve things with a key stroke than with mouse clicks.
Hi Byte My Pi, just wanted to show my appreciation for this awesome Ubuntu Server installation video. You covered everything with such care and clarity. Love the pace and the supporting annotations. You clearly put a lot of work into this and it’s one of the best videos I’ve used. Been wanting to build my own server for a few years now and after settling on Ubuntu Server and then finding this video, I’m totally sold. Great work my good man 👍🏾
Dude, no joke...your video has helped me to understand more about Linux than I've been able to pick up googling and experimenting the last 20 years. You are an excellent teacher. Good pace, good explanations, good attention to detail and explaining those details. ALL tutorial videos should be like this one. Great work.
I want to express my appreciation for the effort, knowledge and skill you shared through this video. The pacing was perfect. I'm extremely grateful to have come away having learned something I'd been putting off for years. Thank you!
Thanks, this is by far the best tutorial I have watched in terms of clarity, completeness and accuracy with all the technical jargon simplified. Greatly appreciate your time effort and patience👍👋
I've watched many tutors on RU-vid about many subjects but this is really one of the bests i've seen. All details are explained why one should do something and why not etc etc . If youre about to start Ubuntu server this is the Tutor to watch and help you get started!!!
Wow! If I had found your channel 10 months ago I could have saved so much time. This is by far the most productive and valuable Ubuntu Server video I have ever seen. I have consumed 100’s of hours on RU-vid learning how to setup servers. This 1 hour video just covered every topic I have been trying to implement. Cheers brother…I owe you a coffee. 😊
So easy to follow and covers everything I needed! You explain everything clearly, and are not cutting the video so often like other youtubers sometimes do which makes it hard to understand. Thanks!

Such a clear video, this should be a template for how all instructional videos are made. Nothing is missed out or skipped over. The commands are explained. The video stays on track without getting drawn into long discussions about different topics. Everything follows a natural logical order. Thanks for making. Subscribed
This was just great, I've been wanting to setup an at home server for some time, and have been struggling with which system to use, I had been going back and forth between Ubuntu and Debian, this extensive tutorial sealed the deal, especially setting up Samba & going through adding users, the firewall, mounting drives, it was exactly what I was looking for. Thank you! This vid will be a valuable tool going forward as I have successfully setup my first server, a Test for now, until I get my storage situated.
Really beautiful work here. I’m fairly adept at Linux, but I’m constantly frustrated with what documentation takes for granted…you are not afflicted with this malady.
I recently found your channel and I am very impressed with how you walk your viewers through the whole process. I'm new to Raspberry Pi but going through your videos I feel I am ready to jump in. Thank you for your time and sharing your knowledge. 😎👍
Absolutely brilliant thank you so much. I recently moved from Windows to Ubuntu As my daily driver. I was wanting to set up a server for a simple file sharing and a few other helpful services. This is a great beginners tutorial. Thank you again
Thank you alot for this guide, Followed it back and forth a few times. It is so helpful. Some funny things in there as well "Automagically" lol. Was very fun following along with you, and you are very clear in what to do and informative, 11/10 guide! :)
I loved netstat, but it has been replaced by iproute2's "ss" and "ip route" commands. Very nice walk through of setting up and basic use of Ubuntu Server.
This is really awesome, thank you. Very clear instructions with just enough context. In a day or so I was able to set up a server with unattended upgrades and cockpit, add docker, pi-hole and portainer, install a new drive and set up samba. And I learned a bunch of helpful stuff in the process. Thanks again!
Gotta tell you Byte My Pi, not only I won't forget your name. But your clarity and explanations where absolutely clean. I'm a total beginner, and this video made me love Linux environment. Thanks to you. Hope you can still make this kind of content.
This is one of the best instructional videos I've ever seen about a topic like this. Even the fact you explain how to install SHH "again" is perfect. The different chapters in the video are really helpful too. And 'use your cursor keys to highlight it and use the enter key to select it' seems nothing but for a complete newbie it's can be the difference to be stuck or not. Then the RDP, webconsole with cockpit. beyond complete!
Off topic: I'm new to linux. Starting to learn the basics. Because of this i need tutorials that I can rely on. Now I'm at a point where I really despise YT for not showing dislikes because I won't be able to filter out bad tutorials from good ones at a glance.(not referring to this video, it's a good one and I liked it ). Any suggestions for good and proven ressources are welcome. The official Ubuntu site is really helpful already but are there any other good sites catered to newbies? I realise its an old video :D
Glad you liked the video. If you're wanting to learn Linux, you could do a lot worse than investing in a Raspberry Pi. You can find all kinds of interesting projects for the Pi that will teach you a good many Linux skills. In fact, a good place to start is the Raspberry Pi's official website: www.raspberrypi.org/ Have fun :)
Thank you for sharing such wonderful knowledge in this and other videos that you have posted. Your instructions in these videos were instrumental in helping me to set-up my first Ubuntu server. Since then I have also being successful in setting up Ubuntu and Debian servers with Docker, Portainer, Webmin, Jellyfin , Airsonic, Plex and Nextcloud. Much thanks to you being such a wonderful teacher. God Bless.
how did you configure the path for Jellyfin? since it cannot take an smb folder as a media folder? I tried /mnt/drive2/Media/movies but that didn't work
Excellent tutorial video!! Thanks so much. Side-question: I've been using cfdisk for a very long time now with no negative experience. What does gdisk do better/different?
Fantastic video. Thank you. Loved the detail and now will be trying to move away from my qnap sql db server (now unsupported for mariadb) , will be starting from zero knowledge and building a Db server on a pi400. Your video has been fundamental in giving me the confidence to try, and practice doing this. Long video and the first in a long time that I have found exciting. I have subscribed as you seem fantastically knowledgeable in this area and kind enough to share. 👍 hope your able to do more in the future. At some point when I’ve got to a std lamp setup I like and have learned how to do it manually. If there is a way to batch all of this you’ve shown into an executable that would be a nice next lesson.
You're welcome. Always good to hear when someone is setting up their own Linux server. I'm currently working on a Linux Terminal video (which is turning into another long one!). Hopefully you may find some of the content useful in that when it's published. Thanks for your support, much appreciated :)
Thank you very much for this very informative and easy to follow guide! Like other commenters, I was looking at bother Debian and Ubuntu server for a small low resource home server for Pi-Hole and Wireguard. This video has really swayed me towards Ubuntu, One question regarding the Automatic Updates, how do you manage the services like Pi-Hole when the machine reboots every day? do the services restart automagically also or do you need to add a command to the Automatic Update file also? thank you in advance if you read this comment!
Thank you for your video and it helps explain everything about starting a server. You have taken great care in your presentation where guys like me getting started, can gain insight on what is required to set it up. I plan to build a file server in the next few months and I will use your presentation to ensure I do all the detailed settings correctly. Thanks again.
What an excellent explanation, y have tried several times to do this with varying degrees of success, but with this I could really understand and do things better first try. The cockpit part was cherry on top(new for me). Really thank you. Greetings from México.
Best video on ubuntu and ubuntu server. Thank you. Gave more help than just setting up a server. Explained things along the way that should (but dont need to be) understood.
Byte - this video was easy to understand and well put together! As soon as I can find a spare pc that will do the job laying about I'm going to give the server build a go myself. Thank You.
Maybe it has already been said but if your server is in a VM please set it up with "bridged" networking setting in your architecture virtualization software so that you can connect to it using ssh
3 years later and apart from some different file names meaning you have to cd into the directory and type ls, this guide is still amazing. Thanks Bytemypi
Such informative video. Just couple of days back I built my first system with Ubuntu server as a newbie, took me a whole day and countless blogs and articles and various different commands which would in turn do the same thing in different way. If only I found this video, it would have easily cleared up all my doubts. Hope the channel owner is doing ok, noticed he hasn’t posted anything lately.
I'm just getting started, and trying to run before i can walk with Proxmox, pfsense, frigate, HAOS, but finding I need to slow down and learn basics. Have tried following web but your videos are just a perfect pace with good explanation, thank you very much indeed!
This video is excellent for understanding how a server is installed and configured. Videos like this are rare, great tips, technical, however, an easy to understand explanation and straight to the point. Thanks!
There are pros and cons with each, but both make great server distros. Personally, I like the fixed scheduled releases that Ubuntu brings, so you know precisely when the LTS version's five years of support starts and ends :)
I have risked a bit by going with cinnamon-core (with --no-install-recommends) and it turns out you do not need to do anything else to connect with rdp. It just works. What is even more important, the server starts with tty, and not the gui greeter, which is what you'd usually want on a server. Cinnamon starts only when it's connected with rdp and turns itself off when disconnected from rdp. It take about 300 MB of RAM, but still, you wouldn't want it to run in the background all the time.
all was good till I got to the Drives section of the video, I only have onde HDD for my server and I'm afraid I'm gonna mess up the OS if I keep going.
Fantastic video I have managed to set up my server just like the way you have done it on this video, only got one question if you don’t mind. Please could you tell me, In samba configuration where you shared drive2, I have done the same thing and have no issues, but now I would like to share a 3rd drive, how do you alter the command line for samba to share the 3rd drive ? Many thanks
Hi @Byte My Pi, Thank you for this great resource. I truly appreciate your efforts on making this resource available to us. I have an Ubuntu 20.04.6 LTS server. I am using ssh connection to access my server remotely. But the problem is that in order to access my server remotely without any interruption through ssh, I must need to physically log in my main server. Otherwise, my remote connection is disconnected after a certain period of time (~10-15 mins later). Could you please provide some insights on resolving the issues. I truly appreciate your response on this. Thanks!!
Be aware that if you, like me, have an actual HP server (In my case an HP DL60 G9) you need to confirm the ISO image parameters since HP is very particular about how it wants the ISO to be formatted. I used HP ISO creation tool since I found RUFUS formatted ISO using default parameters would not boot or even have the USB recognized. The same thing applied to the ISO for the SPP firmware updates. Good luck finding the current SPP since HP have changed their policies in the last 18 months and no longer make the SPP available for free download. You are now required to purchase a several thousand-dollar service contract for your hardware to get access to the SPP file. The SPP is available through other means, but it can be difficult to find the most current version as HP has revoked several earlier versions due to hardware compatibility issues with an IDE controller, only use G9 PPs as well. there is a G10 and a G92 SP floating around with the same date codes. Pay attention the G10 is not compatible, and I can't find any detailed information on the G92 version at all. Also, HP machines are fussy about which brands and capacities of USB keys they will recognize when plugged in. I tried to stick to 4Gb keys but those are getting hard to find in such small capacities. I had to try several assorted brands to get one that was recognised. I now have a kit of USB keys and software tools just for this semi-proprietary server. While UBUNTU is not officially supported the community has confirmed that it is stable and reliable (22.04 version at least I don't know about later versions). Of course, you can buy one from HP but again only if you have a service contract with them. Next time I buy a used server I am going with a Dell. This was too much effort for a home lab.
Dear Byte My Pi, Current, i has Dell server run Os Ubuntu 22.04. in the future, I will setup one more server run Os Ubuntu 22.04 to run in parallel, for the purpose of redundancy and backup. If the first dies server, there is still second replace. but, I don't know the steps how to configure, set up and synchronize data for the two servers. May can you and everyone help me. Thank you so much.
Hello BMP. Thanks for this video! I am stuck trying to initiate my remote GUI for my headless server. Whereas you got a dropdown when you put in XDLE, I got a blank. I am using Win 10 and Ubuntu 2204. Would you point me to the right process?
I use it on Orange Pi 5. Generally, it works well, however Java sound doesn't work for Oracle JVM 17, so I have to use OpenJDK 11. I hope you can fix it.
Hello I am a home user I decide to use a weaker system as a file manager I chose Ubuntu Server for this so that I can transfer data to smb format with my main system which has Windows operating system. Unfortunately, I failed to launch the Ubuntu server for this task And I still have a problem Thank you for guiding me My questions: Is Ubuntu Server suitable for this? Do I need to install an antivirus or a firewall for the security of Ubuntu Server? The last question is why smb does not start? Thank you for your very good and useful channel
Hi, I'm having a problem connecting to the Samba server from Windows File Explorer. I did enter the username and password, but it simply did not show anything or say. IthTheror clicked ok, okay then like nothing happened
I'm about to start building my linux server following your excellent video. One question. The ubuntu server file is ubuntu-22.04.1-live-server-amd64 iso. My server is an intel i5. That's not going to be an issue will it?
SOMEONE HELP ME i have followed all the procedure but i can not update or install apt i get errors like "some index files failed to download. They have been ignored,or old ones used instead. am using desktop with hdd 500,ram 4 gb, server 20.04
That error message would suggest that your server isn't connecting to the Ubuntu repositories for some reason. I'd try typing "ping google.com" (without the quotes) into the Terminal and press Enter to double check that the server is connected to the internet. Hope that helps :)
How can I get out of desktop environment? I guess my server doesn't have good enough graphics card so it shows all staticy. I have to access my server via ssh. CAN SOMEONE HELP?
This is an excellent presentation. However, I hit a pothole when it came to testing the web server. First, I didn't have the option to install LAMP through tasksel (I have, in the past, installed LAMP on both Windows and Linux and am familiar with using it.) How do I proceed going forward as I would love to set up a few services (i.e. samba, LAMP and more) ? Should I just go ahead and install LAMP on my own or is it already on my system?
The video is very instructive despite not being a programmer The reason is that 2 months ago I bought the PS1A enterprise server "manufactured" by Invitech. Where it only has the Paramount CMS Al 2.0 program installed. When you upload the image of the program, 1/3 of the right side of the image is missing, technical support tells me that the reason is that it is enlarged because I do not have a professional 4K monitor installed on the server. mine do not share I will appreciate your comments. Gregorio
Great video. I have (3) metal boxes that I am using using a sql servers (test, deve and production). How can I ssh securely into either of them from one laptop?
Right after installing the Lxde environment, rebooting and trying to login... my password is not being recognizing; "Failed to start session". I could enter using the CLI before, but why isn't possible now?
Great video! Thanks! I'm having an issue after installing the GUI though as I do not get the prompt to select the default display manager and I'm stuck with the command line interface. Has anyone had the same issue or know how to resolve this? I am using Ubuntu Server 22
sudo apt install update-notifier-common didnt work for me.....i had to use sudo apt update After updating apt database, We can install update-notifier-common using apt by running the following command: sudo apt -y install update-notifier-common
Back again. In the section on LAMP, when you used tasksel, you had a long list of things that can be installed. My list appears to be much shorter and does not include an entry for LAMP server, or most of the items on your list. Mine seems to be centered around different types of graphical interfaces. How can I get the list you have?
you video was extensive and very informative. I ran into one issue that I cannot seem to resolve. Maybe you can help. Despite your warning I attempted to install the lxde desktop gui. A reboot opens the screen to enter the password. Doing that results in a message stating "failed to start session". How do I get rid of this and just boot to the terminal?
