Every September Ucluelet hosts the Dustin Riley Memorial Soap Box Derby and UkeeTube has been able to shoot these fun videos that have become a highlight of the year for me to make. Thanks to the organizers, volunteers and competitors for making it happen and of course the direct sponsors of this video, itself. This one is a lighthearted take or the commercialization of motorsport. It was inspired in part by F1 legend Ayrton Senna's comments about Kart racing and a photo my mother had of myself, with a friend and my late brother having fun with a soap box car in the early 90's.
30 years ago, when I had my first Soap Box racing team it was about the passion for racing. We weren't distracted by charity bbq's or cotton candy... You wouldn't catch us painting our faces or playing with balloon animals between heats. We were serious about the gravitas of gravity. We had a passion for speed, not the glitz and glamour of today's Soap Box world... but even then we needed money to keep the car on the ramp... and we sold our souls to sponsors to keep rolling
3 decades later Soap Box a billionaire's boys club; Thanks to flashy prizes and high production values, big media and allegations of illegal betting have wormed their way into every corner of the sport but if you cut through the fog and look to the fan or behind the wheel you'll still find those with the passion for racing
