Is The UCO Flat Pack Grill The Best Grill For Camper Vans Like The Winnebago Travato? There are a lot of perks to a small, nimble camper van like our Winnebago Travato 59K. Tons of storage is not over of them so if you’re going to take a grill with you it has to either be really small or take up space needed for something else. We opted for small and purchased a UCO Flat Pack Grill. In this review I show you:
* What It’s Like To Light The Flat Pack Grill
* How The Flat Pack Grill Heats Up and Holds Heat
* How The Flat Pack Grill Cooks Burgers
* How The Grilling Pad Works With The Flat Pack Grill

I own one of these grills myself,...and I can pass on a couple of tips that you might find helpful. 1. Pre-cut a few pieces of aluminum foil that are sized to fit inside the grill as a "liner" and pack them right inside the storage bag with your grill.... They take up very little space, and it makes clean up a snap. Just gather up the foil liner with the charcoal ashes and any cooking debris inside it,..and dispose of it properly once you're done cooking and it's had a chance to cool down. 2. Take a couple of empty beverage cans and "pinch" them into the shape of a crude lengthwise triangle,.. then place them in the bottom of the grill before you insert the foil liner & charcoal. This does two things,.. It takes up some of the space at the bottom of the grill, so that you can cook using less charcoal. AND it also raises the level of the charcoal up closer to the grilling grate so you can spread your coals out in a nice uniform layer for better coverage, which helps to keep the heat more even over the entire cooking surface. These couple of tips are cheap & easy,...and they take up very little extra space. The cans can be reused multiple times, and the foil liner helps to keep all that cooking grease you leaked all over the picnic table, from messing up the next camper's outdoor fun.

Thanks Len. I’ve tried one. Have one. But no room in the little van for a tube chimney. Good idea though.

I love charcoal grilling with fruit wood, but travel with my charcoal deluxe propane grill. I can grill up some tasty meals on that thing and there is now charcoal mess. By the time you pack enough charcoal you take about the same space. Great video, thanks.

Thank you. We are coming from a bigger 5th wheel and I had a small Komado grill in that one. Temp control with the Flat Pack is going to be challenging. I can see how your grill would be better. The charcoal doesn’t take extra room for me. I put it in gallon ziplocks and store or in an unused area under the toilet pedestal. I guess I could put something else there so it’s using space. But limited things can be non-grossly stored in this area. :-). Thanks for watching and reaching out. Means a lot. Owen

I'd really like to try the external gas connection on our 59G. I'm just not sure what connectors will work with our grill we have a small Coleman grill we are packing with us. Have you tried using the external gas connection. Oh, we love the videos you guys are great!
@VANTREKKINGlifestyle
@VANTREKKINGlifestyle 5 лет назад
I’d like to try that as well. My understanding is it depends on whether you can get a connector hose for your grill that doesn’t have a regulator. If it does it will not work since the propane at the quick connect is already regulated. We haven’t tried that but several times I’ve “threatened” to toss the charcoal grill for one. :-). Glad you are loving the videos and that we are connected here and on Instagram. :-)

Will do. Almost every time we use it we are at a “camp site” with a fire pit. Usually I take whatever I’ve grilled off and we eat. Then I take the grate off the top of the grill and to help it cool down and to help with building a fire I dump the coals into the fire pit. That way the basin of the grill can cool enough for me to wipe it down and store it. I’ll ty to video that next time. I don’t pour water on it because I am a little afraid of warping or rusting. It would probably be OK but I’ve just been careful.

Just curious, where do you pack your screen tent in the Travato?
@VANTREKKINGlifestyle
@VANTREKKINGlifestyle 6 лет назад
Hey Chuck. It fits under the bed in the 59K. It does take a lot of that space. We are not taking it on our next trip, a 30 day trip that ends up in Acadia. We just need the space for food and clothing so we’re not taking the room. But it fits great under the bed.

Are you using the Mini model or the larger 13 inch size????
@VANTREKKINGlifestyle
@VANTREKKINGlifestyle 6 лет назад
Hello Jack. Thanks for watching and commenting. We purchased the larger 13” version. After the 4 burgers cooked down we were able to get the burgers and 8 bun pieces on the grill. 2 good sized steaks will fit well too.

great videos.....considering purchase of 59KL, is fresh water storage a limitation? What kind of fuel economy are you getting? Thanks in advance

Yes the all the tanks are small for sure. We have learned to deal with it. Pulling out of site today after s 7-night dry camping stay. Fresh is at 1/3 and Black is at 2/3. May have been able to make 8 days but that would be tops. Getting between 16-17mpg consistently.

Do you get the good charcoal taste using a mat?
@VANTREKKINGlifestyle
@VANTREKKINGlifestyle 5 лет назад
The taste was there but it deflected too much heat. Stopped using the mat. But the grill is awesome. Just have to let it heat up a lot before starting the cook.
@sterlinghousewashpressurew9594
Maybe drill some holes in the grill plate for more heat

Thank you! I’ve learned to use more charcoal than I think I need and it stays hot for almost too long.

This thing looks pretty flimsy, will it last a whole season?
@VANTREKKINGlifestyle

+jay dee I hope it does. Hinge design is probably the weakest part. Others have had failures there. We’ll see. Fingers crossed. Used it again last night for steaks and it was flawless. :-)

I was thinking the same. Our Aussie will have that bad boy on the ground or covering us in a second with hot coals.

Think I'll pass on the 'cookie sheet' idea, cus who knows what kind of chemicals are going into your burgers off that thing. I'll just take charcoal smoke, thanks.
