A grisly accident changed Miguel Castellanos' life forever, but through evolving technology at UCSF Medical Center (along with the help of his care team that included Matthew Garibaldi and Rami Weinberg) and his own perseverance, he’s challenging the limits of what's possible as a double-amputee.

Way to go Michael. You say in your interview that you are a very religious man. A religious can also mean a man of good habit and a man of wonderful ritual and all of those and more are what make you reflect God‘s creative force so beautifully and the cooperation between you and the medical personnel is inspiring and also relieving! Thank you so much for sharing your story with us.

Miguel, What a beautiful inspirational story to learn how you have over come your disability. I am also a San Francisco native. I was born in SF raised in the Portola district on the other side from Candle Stick. My father and many family relatives also work(ed) in the garbage for Recology, formally, Norcal. My father is now retired. He also had a huge tragedy in 2012 where he got a disease called Necrotizing Fasciitis (Flesh-Eating Bacteria). He truly suffered. Luckily, his strong will to live and by the blessing of our Lord my father is here with us today. During his ordeal the doctors decided to have the left leg amputated. Dad got through the procedures, however, his willingness to walk is not there. He needs encouragement to get him to walk, to do his exercises, to stand for 15 - 30 minutes at a time. He sits for 6 to 8 hours a day without standing which is not acceptable. I've advised him several times of what he needs to do in order for him to one day walk and I can't get him to budge. Miguel, if you have some extra time in your calendar, I believe you could make a difference by sharing some of your experiences to motivate him to continue to strive. I'm to the point that I don't know what else I can do to make him go through the exercises. His therapist has told him he needs to do his part. Dad talks about one day walking, going back to Mexico walking into his home town, and one day driving again but without him getting out of his chair these dreams will never happen. It would be an honor for me and my father to meet such a strong person as yourself. My email is below if there's any chance we could meet you personally. Thanks for listening and Happy Holidays to you and yours. Katia Ramos (kramos49ers@gmail.com)
