Yes, this is indeed a high-end, high-quality synth. I got mine a few months ago - and bought your patches :-) I think you summed it up well with 'modern classic'. It embodies all the things we love about analogue synths in a modern framework and design. I absolutely LOVE the fact that it DOESN'T have a screen :-) It's very, very playable.
Thanks for the comment and hope you're enjoying the patches! :) I agree, Super 6 seems a nod to the classics but w/ a modern design and sound. The screen is debatable, some people prefer one and others don't. :) As mentioned I would've preferred a small LCD/OLED to at least know the settings of saved modulations, but I also understand the philosophy behind not having a screen too (more immediate interaction, no menu diving/distraction). I suppose once there's a computer/iPad app that shows all the routings and amounts, this will be a moot point (I know people are working on it). Looking forward to the what the future holds for this synth, it is a lovely instrument.
Yes, working through your patches :-) @@synth4ever Totally agree about not knowing the routings and a screen would obviously help here. I just hate menu diving :-) and I think once you give a developer a screen he will look for things to put in it :-) I definitely hope they are working on the Arp Latch function. I've never come across an instrument that simply keeps adding notes to an Arp. It makes it virtually impossible to change Arps on the fly if you are also jamming on another synth. I love the Arp on the Moog Grandmother which plays back the notes in the order that you press them. Brilliant!
@@IanWaugh Yes, definitely agree with you about the arp, there should be an option to have it playback in the order you press vs adding notes. Hopefully they include it in a future firmware update!
The UDO synths are really amazing (either the Super 6 ... and of course, the new Super Gemini). Soundwise, design and quality ... all real gems. Regarding the "missing" screen, I think a more visible feedback would be nice. Especially when you are doing a lot of "mod matrix stuff" then it might be difficult to recall the settings you've done. This doesn't require a screen (as e.g. Summit or Peak does) but maybe a feedback by combining LED´s (or using a companion app).
Brilliant review. I should get mine here in about a week. In the blue. SO lucky to have found ONE in stock. And I have already ordered your soundset. Brilliant. I look forward to new volumes... as I am a tweaker and not a creator. New to keys and synths. Chose this 'cherry on top' as a start to my analog journey. Great work. Subscribed.
Thank you Mark! Glad you enjoyed the review and overview. You are indeed lucky to get your hands on one as they are hard to come by, I know you'll enjoy it when it arrives. Thank you for supporting my patches and subscribing to the channel! Cheers
@@synth4ever thank you, yeah it was def for you, but i keep my eyes on this bad boy, i like the Summit tho but if i could have both i wouldnt be unhappy hahaha (and i have a 0 coast around too now!!, ready for the modular void)
Truly…there is only 1 Desert Island Synth. For a time, I thought it was SUMMIT-it was not. IFor a time, I thought it was The Gadgety Almighty….the Poly Brute 12-ii-it was not. And, YES, taking into account Value for Money, so MOOG ONE is out. For a split second, I thought it was TRIGON 6. But of course, you’ve already pointed out the LFO-BECOMES-OSC #3 Trick on Super 6 = MemoryMoog on the fly. So, THE DEAL: poor person goes to Desert Island, taking one Synth, never again to return…to die there. The Brilliant,, Displaylless (and that’s part of the Magic) UDO SUPER GEMINI, hands down! GREAT REVIEW!!❤
Great review. I do wish for a few more mod sources also, though the mod destinations/slots seem unlimited. Also, I tend to like 12-voice mode alot for giant sounds when using LFO 1 as a third oscillator after copying an imported Prophet5 waveform from DDS 1.
Thanks for this great review! I have been eyeing/earing the Super 6 since it was initially presented at Superbooth. The sound really touches my heart. My hesitation comes from the fact that I never had any (classic) instrument and I‘m still learning the fundamentals of music theory… then comes the technique to play the keyboard. My aim was to use the S6 for the learning process. Is it overkill? Budget would be available but I‘m worried it might overwhelm me wrt to required skills and understanding. My only experience is with Eurorack modular synths using quantizers and sequencers. Any thoughts on that? Thanks.
Thanks -- music theory and keyboard skill is something you can learn on any piano/keyboard. But if you like the sound of the Super 6 and want to explore sound design with it, its a great synth but does cost a lot. That said there are of course cheaper options if you just need a starter synth to learn on. Really depends on your level of expertise with subtractive synthesis and budget. There are lots of choices out there these days.
I sure could use your help. I have to pick 1 ultimate Desert Island synth, go to the island, enjoy all my heart can bear…and then die there. Not a joke. I have not much time to delay. Not much time. It was decided, done! I concluded that the Super Gemini (UDO generally, I guess) has the most gorgeous Sonics I’ve ever heard. If it’s your last BUY, buy the best, right? Then Arturia had to drop the PB 12 and I got confused. But it’s not exactly MPE. I want a RISE 2 for true 5 point expression I think. I would simply value your opinion because I know you were pretty WOW’d by the original Polybrute. I keep thinking with UDO Wavetable element going on that sound pallet might be broader. I don’t mind NO DISPLAY, There was a day when I thought sone patch on the Summit was the loveliest sound I’d ever heard. UDO sounds magical to me. PB 12 seems amazingly capable. I thought of Iridium or Quantum but ruled them again. One could buy a Summit and 3 or 4 of Behringer’s and latest clones.,.for Gemini money. Thank you and Great Work you do!
Am I crazy or does this sound like a binaural spiritual successor to the classic Jupiter/Juno with crazy FM/waveforms to boot? Make this 61 keys and bi-timbral and take my money.
Yes, I would agree with that - it seems to be inspired by/spiritual successor to those classics, especially the interface, but with lots of modern updates. I hope they will be able to add true bi-timbrality in a future update, that would be awesome.
Fantastic video, thank you! Mine should’ve been here last week, but storms held up in Memphis, so hopefully by Friday. Are you only using the onboard FX?
Small little screen OR…pencil and note pad. Good updates coming and there is now (I’m sure you know ALL of this) a 3rd party companion software-those developers are working through their own wrinkles. Yeah, you’re right: the sound is pure MAGIC! I’m on the fence, not because of POLY BRUTE 12 or ANY OTHER premium synth. I have stopped to consider Behringer. For super Gemini money, I think I could own every Dream Synth Behringer makes, to include TWO Pro 800s. THAT is something to think about, I could buy a little Cape, surround myself with Behringer and compare sawtooth waveforms all day. The Gemini seems to represent the cohesive Whole-a single world to be drawn into. That sounds nice
Thanks Simon! Depends what kind of sound you're looking for - analog or digital/hybrid. If you prefer analog sounds then Polybrute, if hybrid sounds then Super 6. Also if you want lots of crazy modulation routings & expression capabilities Polybrute wins as it has Z axis via Morphee + touchstrip. Super 6 can also do some nice modulation capabilities but it is a more refined interface/experience. Both are great synths!
hey pal ive been looking for a hardware synth that can do everything diva plugin synth can do. i watched this video and it was great but i see this synth dosent really do plucks or horns that well like diva dose. do you have any suggestions thanks in advance pal - your realllly good at this synth demo and should do way more like this
Really enjoyed your presentation, Thank you :) How is the output level on your unit, I know some of these have/had a very low output level and am wondering if this is still an issue ?
Thanks! Output levels on my unit are fine. I read the issue has to do with using TRS instead of TS cables or something like that. Anyway, I haven't had any problems with output.
they touted it as some great design with ability to be morphed into 'something else' due to its fpga core - have they done this chameleon type affair yet?
Lots of articles on Google that explain the difference, but my understanding is binaural gives you a greater sense of 3D stereo spatial relation/imaging, whereas regular stereo is standard L/R without such capabilities. UDO's own website states: "In Binaural mode, the Super 6 features a true stereo signal path in which the instrument’s twelve voices are twinned to form six stereo ‘super’ voices. Consequently, the left and right channels - and each of the player’s ears - are assigned their own complete synthesizer voice. Parameters for both channels of each super voice may be independently controlled, facilitating the player to create rich and unique stereo images. The effect ranges from subtle to extreme stereo movement, creating an enhanced sense of spatial positioning relative to “conventional” monaural signal-chains panned at their output. Binaural refers to the twin synthesizer signal paths. In Binaural mode, each channel ‘ear’ has a complete synthesizer voice. You can detune and de-phase the left and right oscillators, amplitude and filter (and indeed other parameters) relative to each-other. Ranging from subtle to extreme, this unique feature allows for experimenting with the 'width' of the sound and creates an improved sense of 3D positioning relative to conventional mono signal-chains panned at the output. It has in this sense 6 “Super voices” that each use two “conventional” voices, hence “Super 6”."
Hard to say. It is from a small boutique manufacturer so if they only make a limited run it could rise in price over time due to scarcity. It is certainly a lovely machine.
