Makiwara is a semi-rigid board developed on Okinawa island and it is used to learn how to hit. The aim of the makiwara is to check the correct alignment of the body and the projection of force at the moment of impact. This work enhance the muscle strength and accustom the body to the moments of impact, especially areas where direct impact occurs and the surrounding joints (wrists, ankles, etc).
Makiwara also aims to develop the most definitive strokes as possible in order to shorten the fighting. Also, being made of wood, help to develop the habit of hit with hard materials the muscle tissues and joints, similar to hit the arm bones or ribs of an opponent in a figth.
You should start to use it smoothly and gradually increase the intensity of the experience gradually, in order to avoid injuries or wounds that may disrupt training.

Goju-ryu practitioner here. This is a great Makiwara video, in fact one of the best. I'm building my own for the garage training. Thank you!

Does this cause injury and pain later in life? I ask because I'm interested in this sort of training.
@ookamisamishii
@ookamisamishii 6 лет назад
No if you do it properly, besides, the objective of the makiwara is to check the correct alignment of the body and the projection of the force at the moment of impact, favoring the muscular strength and the body habituating to the moments of impact, especially the areas where the direct impact occurs The surrounding joints (wrists, ankles, etc.). So you should adapt to its use over time, in order to avoid injuries. It should be started in a gentle way and increase the intensity with the experience little by little, in order to avoid injuries or wounds that can interrupt the training.

Thanks I prefer concrete for now but I like the wood and roped for the fingers
@ookamisamishii
@ookamisamishii 5 лет назад
If you use it for hand condition is fine, the benefit of the makiwara is that you can use the complete technic. You can use concrete like Higaonna Sensei, but it is used only for hand condition, not for learn to strike correctly. Makiwara can be used for both, learn to strike correctly, at the same time that your hand are condition, and to avoid have callus in the knuckles.

@alejandrootindeoliveira3949
@alejandrootindeoliveira3949 7 лет назад

@ookamisamishii
@ookamisamishii 5 лет назад
well not really, obviously it need to be hard if not it will broke. The most import thing in a makiwara is in the name "wara", the "wara" is the most important part. "wara" is the rope used, that is done with rice straw, if you use regular rope your knuckles will suffer much more.
