I would think that Florida would prefer to have FSU in the SEC over the potential of FSU joining the B1G. I think Florida has absolutely had the advantage over the past 20 or so years as the SEC has become more dominant and they could sell playing in the SEC as the greatest potential to be broadcast in primetime and make it to the NFL. However, if FSU were to join the B1G, they would now also have the same argument that Florida has used over the past 20 years, but they would have the sales pitch of "If you play at Florida, the biggest markets you're going to play in are Austin, Atlanta, and Nashville. If you come to Florida State, you're going to get exposure in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, Columbus, Detroit, etc. When it comes to players making money, which is more marketable? Playing in the largest markets in the country or playing in a conference that's largely in the sticks? At least if FSU were to join the SEC, from Florida's prospective, they're on equal footing and a completely equal playing field. Not to mention, schools in the B1G will be making more than schools in the SEC by 2030. If the B1G adds television markets in say... Florida and North Carolina, their television deal will only get that much larger.

I believe Ali might be being a little intellectually dishonest with her theory on why Florida wouldn't care if FSU was in the SEC. It's true that they will play each other anyways, as she stated, but Florida would love to keep that game from becoming a conference loss instead of just a lost rivalry game. It's the one way they can protect their image as the "premier" program in Florida. Being the lone member of the SEC is the only reason they still carry that moniker.
@adamb6370

I think the proper way to say it is. UF is not afraid of FSU joining. But they don’t see any value for them letting them in. They are not expanding their brand to a new place. They are not adding a new opponent, and yes a win or loss would mean more as a conference hit.

lol, of course a Florida fan would want another doormat team like Virginia. Maybe they could get another win sometimes. Notre Dame is absolutely not going to the SEC. When they join a conference, it will be the big ten. Almost all of their traditional rivals are there now. Going to the SEC means losing those games. Florida has always been terrified of FSU joining the SEC, because they are scared of competition. They want to be the biggest and best in Florida, but only by keeping their in-state rivals down. If FSU does go to the Big Ten, the money gap disappears, and UF will continue its slide into irrelevance. It’s actually better for them if FSU does join the SEC. The best case scenario was for FSU to stay in the ACC forever, but that’s over now. If the SEC was smart instead of arrogant, they’d snap up FSU, Clemson, UNC and UVA and leave the scraps for the Big Ten. The best they can hope for in that scenario is for Notre Dame to join, but after that, there aren’t any more major brands to take. Unless maybe TAMU decides to run away from Texas again.

Use common sense people. The absolute natural fits for Florida State and Notre Dame is for Florida State to go to the SEC and Notre Dame to the Big 10. Despite what Greg Sankey has said in the past, which we all know from the Texas and Oklahoma editions, he is not always truthful in public. Plus, it's certainly seems like Petiti and Sankey are working together. I simply can't imagine that they are not using basic common sense to make these decisions.

Lets be honest, Miami hasnt competed in football since joining the ACC (2004). Neither has Syracuse, or Boston College, or any other ACC school who hasnt won a title in football (which includes UVA & UNC since 04). The top teams involving football in the ACC are Clemson, FSU and Virginia Tech in terms of titles. Everyone else is atleast 3 titles or more behind (with football being the driving force in terms of revenue). So, if we're being honest and only speaking of football, UVA & UNC dont make the cut. Neither does Miami. But maybe these schools only join certain conferences in football only.

Lol - UF is scared stiff of FSU joining the SEC. Gators have been bringing up the rear in the state ever since Bowden took over FSU in 1976 and Miami became a national powerhouse. Since that time, UF has a losing record against both FSU and Miami and (other than the Tebow years) has generally underperformed - Spurrier himself went 5-10-1 against his instate rivals. Rather pathetic when you consider UF has been playing football the longest and is the better funded program by a significant margin. Despite those advantages, FSU and Miami have become more iconic and successful brands and provide the more nationally intriguing matchup. Gator Nation knows full well that leveling the cash-flow with FSU risks further widening the gap.

I'm from the B1G. I think the B1G can deal with 20 schools for scheduling purposes ( 4 -5 team divisions). Anything beyond twenty requires a whole new concept. From the B1G's perspective, I'll guess that the two most desirable schools to add would be UNC & UVA. Obviously, these two are not the top football schools in the ACC. There are several reasons why I make this guess. First, it expands the B1G footprint into contiguous States (if UVa comes then North Carolina is contiguous}. Second, UVa & UNC are two of the top public academic schools nationally The B1G would care about academics, not as much as viewer expansion, but some. UCLA, UNC, Michigan & UVa are among the top half-dozen public Universities in America. That would matter. I agree with this podcast that ultimately FSU will go B1G and UNC will go SEC. The B1G will be happy to add northwestern Florida/and a little southwestern Georgia to its viewership with FSU which is a good public school. Recruiting would benefit too. And the B1G would hope for UVa. UVa will be the prize remaining. I can see the SEC taking VaTech and B1G UVa as a compromise. Oh yeah. Notre Dame. Of course, the B1G would take ND. Too much $$$. That said, I hope N.D. ends up somewhere other than the B1G. I've listened to their "ND is special" malarkey all my life. ND's mantra is they must stay independent to ensure their special status. It's a ploy to give ND what they perceive as a competitive advantage. I'd be delighted if they were forced into the SEC. Won't happen, but I'd love it.

If the SEC expands, adding FSU and Clemson would give the conference the best football league by far but they don't actually add a tremendous amount of new eyes to the conference. Conversely, adding UNC and UVA adds a ton of new eyeballs to the conference but does nothing for football. Lastly, I don't see a league whose fanbase is comprised of a lot of Southern Baptist inviting a program whose fanbase is hugely comprised of Catholics, just my opinion on Notre Dame likely never getting a SEC invite.

Florida fought to keep FSU out for years. So please stop acting like FSU had an acceptable offer from the SEC. Also, the SEC at the time was not the powerhouse like today. I don't think that's correct as the SEC wouldn't have offered FSU if it had already accepted an ACC offer. SEC doesn't blatantly offer a school if it's a conference member. As Texas and Ok approached the SEC about membership publicly as they were already assured of membership privately. Of course, there are off the record talks. SEC was publicly embarrassed by Miami's and FSU's public turn downs. I'm glad they said no as USC was then able to join. USC might have been invited later as a joiner with A&M. SEC should have invited WVa instead of Mizzou who was whoring itself out for a B10 invite. B10 wanted nothing to do with Mizzou. SEC wanted WVa but ESPN insisted on Mizzou. WVa would have been a much better fit for the SEC geographically and culturally and athletically. Mizzou allowed a bunch of snot nosed demonstrating kids to take over its campus back then.

No, the SEC never offered FSU. They were being considered, but when the SEC learned FSU was also talking to the ACC, they voted to withdraw consideration. It was quite juvenile. Bobby wanted the SEC, the admin wanted the ACC. He was a good soldier by making the comments he did, because he wasn’t the type to throw his employers under the bus. Originally the SEC wanted Texas and FSU. Texas said no, FSU chose the ACC, and Miami was also considered but also declined. They got the consolation prizes of South Carolina and Arkansas. If you're going to add two teams to the SEC that's a non-brainer you would take West Virginia Kansas or Kansas State those schools fit the SEC best. The ACC teams really don't fit in the SEC they're not really football schools unless you're getting Florida State, Clemson, Miami or Notre Dame. But cultural wise the other ACC teams don't fit and don't have a very good football track record outside of those ACC teams. West Virginia would give the SEC the top 15th most winningest teams right below Clemson and above Texas A&m.
