McGregor answered a big question, and people still can't accept it. The UFC doesn't fix fights, and a fighter like Mendes wouldn't take a dive. Team Alpha Male would love to hold two belts. Conor hit him square, dropped him, and then kept the pressure on with punches. Herb could have let it go a second longer, but it didn't look like Chad was moving to stand up. We would have just seen Chad taking a few more punches. The reason he wasn't upset is because he knew he was hurt, and he is a nice, reasonable guy. He knows Herb didn't rob him.
atherion0 Connor proved that he was a better fighter than Mendes and he did answer the wrestler question: He can't defend himself from takedowns and he can't do shit on the mat. He is ok at getting back to his feet but he should not have gone down so easily in the first place. The stoppage was legit cause Mendes had no chance of coming back from that. He had gassed out and his chest was hurt.
Nic AA Conor said he had some injuries that he didn't specify, so maybe it had something to do with that. He also looked like he was looking to get stood back up, rather than try to attack from the bottom. He may have just felt he had a much better chance on the feet than trying to submit Chad. I was yelling for him to throw his legs up, but either way, he was able to defend himself well enough and get up. He also stuffed two of the six takedowns. So, I don't think that is too terrible of a percentage for a striker against a high-level wrestler.
atherion0 There is no doubt in my mind that Connor wanted to get off the mat as fast as possible. He was rumoured to have an injured knee which obviously wasn't the case, given the number of kicks he threw at Mendes. If Mendes hadn't went for the submission , Connor would not have been able to get back up for the rest of that round.
Nic AA He got up from other takedowns, and was defending himself sufficiently, though. So, you can't assume he would have stayed there, or that him being on his back for the rest of that round would have had a significant impact on the rest of the fight. There were three full rounds left after that one. Chad was landing shots from his guard, and passing a little, but not enough to do real damage. As for his kicks, him throwing them wouldn't automatically imply his knee wasn't injured. He wasn't throwing super powerful kicks, and it probably wasn't hurt enough to prevent him from not throwing any at all. It could have had an effect on his ability/desire to use his legs in the guard.
atherion0 Conor had a torn ACL in the knee going into this fight, so I guess he needs surgery and he's gonna be out for a few months. Aldo vs McGregor should happen in January / February 2016
yall say with a full camp mendes would hold him down for five rounds... well maybe with a full camp training for a wrestler mcgregor would stuff more takedowns and attack off his back more
>He's a nobody, they said >He's never fought a top 10 guy, they said >He's "all talk", they said >He's never fought a top 5 guy. they said >He's just another Chael Sonnen, they said >He has no ground game, they said >He's never fought a wrestler, they said >Poirier will beat him, they said >Aldo will kill him, they said >Aldo's not afraid to fight, they said >Mendes will submit him, they said >He'll never be the champ, they said I wonder, what are they saying now?
***** Well, before the fight, Chad and his corner were bragging about they prefered to keep it a small camp because he would be full strength. Now they use the lack of full camp as an excuse for their loss. Well, point made, i guess they talk and find all the excuses they want...by the end of the day he lost to Connor. Point, period, next line...
limerickcrime chad gassed but before he did he clearly demonstrated how easy it is to take conor down and beat on him. put the chad that fought aldo for 5 grueling rounds in there last night and it might not be a memorable slugfest but chad wins easily. and no it doesnt matter that conor would get to train for the takedown, he showed last night his ground game from top to bottom is nowhere near his other abilities, and a camp doesnt change that. ask cub
limerickcrime not a champ till you beat the champ. That's why most people are bitching at cormier saying he's not the real champ (aldo isn't a colossal fuck up like jon though to be fair)
limerickcrime they said he's got controlled for 2 rounds, they said his wrestling is embarrassing, and all that was true, if mendes had a good chin and the fight went to decision he would've been lost, but wait for Aldo and you will see your hero lol.
I love McGregor AND Mendez, But everyone should be talking about Robbie vs Rory, that fight was one of the best fights in UFC history, if not MMA history. Top 10 easily. That was true fighting, the absolute pinnacle. You won't see a fight like that again for a long time i don't think.
realize this is a 4 year old comment but for real. I’m reading through the comments and 90% of them are about mcgregor. Like this literally had one of the greatest fights in history and no one is talking about it. Re-fucking-spects to Robbie and Rory for the absolute war they had, at least Dana was giving them their props. Probably my personal favourite fight of all time, that stare down at the end of round 4 was insane.
@@Brandon34300 :) This was the fight that turned me from a casual fan to a life long till death do us part fan, that fight literally changed me just watching it :) I still watch it, and i always recommend it to people showing interest in the greatest sport on earth :)
@@jay-jb6397 Literally the exact same for me, this fight turned me into a much more serious fan of mma and gave me a true level of respect for fighters. Always the first fight I show to my friends who want to start watching the ufc but are still undecided
Conor did a great job gassing Chad out with those vicious body shots. It was kinda funny how Conor was desperately asking Herb to stand them up while Chad landed elbows on his face. Awesome fight. Much respect to both.
Cherry Pauper No he didn't say that. He sent in scans of his current injury which also showed a past injury. If you break a bone it can heal but it won't just disappear from any future scans by magic.
clive ramsbotty Didn't Aldo say, "Unfortunately, I fractured my rib during a training session, which I can prove from an official medical report." Now that we know it's not fractured, wouldn't that count as lying in terms of it being the reason to pull out? Granted, I might give leeway for things being lost in translation.
No Dana clarified on Twitter, he thought it was an X-ray image but it was an MRI. White lines on MRI mean new injuries while on x Ray they are old ones. He just spoke too soon. Still can't wait for mcgregor vs Aldo. Mcgregor proved he was elite world class fighter but he has HUGE weaknesses. He does get hit, Mendes was able to easily get inside and his reach was neutralized by the fear of being taken down. I think Aldo will emulate this and I just don't see how much Conor can improve his wrestling until then. I still pick the champ Aldo, 3 rd Round tko
He had 4 months training for a striker, he could not answer mendes's wrestling and ground game. I don't think you can say Aldo will definitely beat mcgregor because of that, another way to look at it is mendes took Aldo to a decision, mcgregor finished him you simply don't know
Just... No. Aldo mentally would be broken. Already was arguably. I don't think he is scared but I'm sure he has a little doubt in himself and that Is all that it takes
***** Minecraft rulez you microeconic freelancer, you! I don't have a proplem with ppl that smoike , bbut but I just try and be safe fro m gas. Like y would you pharoah a togra?
This Stoic and introspective Conor was the best ever. Even the way he speaks slowly and with the precise words he wants to use is something to behold. He’s made a good turnaround from being a massive douchebag since the Khabib fight. I’d love to see him go back to this state of Zen in his return to fighting.
Jizzle Monk Is it true that Irish people have to have sex with their cousins for their 21st birthday? As a sort of, family initiation? Or do they just do it for the pure pleasure?
Jizzle Monk Is it true that Irish people have to have sex with their cousins for their 21st birthday? As a sort of, family initiation? Or do they just do it for the pure pleasure?
Chuck Norris quite right, and chad definitely hit him rather solid in several occasions. and most importantly, I saw conor at the weigh ins looking like Klaus kinski in Phantom der Nacht and thought to myself, oh there s no way he is going to win. he looks like he could just keel over at any moment. but he is one resilient and strong bugger. congrats to him and his team.
ziongite He was winning on points, I'll give you that. But I do believe Conor was no where near coming close to be finished. I believe chad faded from all the body shots he took, or wondering why McGregor wasn't caving in. I believe Mendes sums it up best in the press conference around 18:02
xfactorb25222 IDK, I don't think for sure that Mendes was winning those rounds. He wasn't wildly successful on top and he was being dominated on the feet. He also ate some huge elbows from the bottom that almost retired him.
What Mendes said about McGregor reminded me of what Ali did to Foreman. Foreman threw vicious punches at Ali and Ali said "Is that all you got sucker?". Say what you want but i have the feeling this guy is the irish Ali!
Omar Little Never. Ali is above everyone. Although they do have similar careers. Jose aldo reminds me of sonny Liston. Nate reminds me of joe Frazier and I have a feeling khabib will end up being George foreman.
Conor was so emotional, anyone could see that his adrenaline was through the roof and I believe this caused him not to preform to his best. I think his next fight he will be more calm and collective; he will preform at a different level. With regards to the stoppage, it was just right. The dispute is only because it was close to the bell, had it been half way through the round, there would be no dispute. Plus as a ref Herb in this case they should not take into consideration how many seconds is left for the end of the round otherwise he would be bias.
one of the best ufc events I've ever seen. To pick fight of the night is so difficult. So much respect for chad mendes now, he bossed that fight i thought, and even more respect to mcgregor for walking the walk!
I think the Rory vs Robbie fight was more of a war to see than the Chad vs Connor hyped fight. Rory has a true heart continued fighting on even after getting his nose broken in the first round.
Bear Grylls The second jet fuel? But ya for the dummies out there there are a lot of flammable materials and fluids in buildings. But dont take my word for it do your own research and every conspiracy angle you can find has been scientifically disproved by the best scientists. Great video on yt that answers every theory if you want to know the truth
Mendes took McGregor down at will and kept him there. With a full camp he could ragdolled him for 5 rounds. Poor takedown defense and not an ounce of ground game.
Nope sorry, I look at facts not on blind loyalty. More strikes and hits and more takedowns. Don't know what fight you were watching. I didnt say conor didn't. I'm talking in TOTAL
Conner has shown how important it is to be able to speak in a way that intrigues the viewer. The fact that Conner not only is a great fighter but when he speaks you can't take your eyes off of him should be a lesson to all the ufc competitors. When you talk think of the professional wrestlers like The Rock or Hulk Hogen. Speak in a way that grabs the viewer and makes them excited to hear what comes out of your mouth next.
Edgar is a decent striker and a way better wrestler. In the fight with Mendes Mcgregor proved that he can't do shit on the mat and striking is his only asset. I predict that Mcgregor beats Aldo via KO/TKO but goes on to lose to edgar in his first title defense
Nic AA tell me how getting back to your feet after being taken down , and held down mind you ill give you that, then knocking your opponent out constitutes having no ground game . Thats wrestling and jujitsu in reverse. Is he as good as mendez at wrestling , no but neither is aldo and he beat mendez twice . I think frankie would cause connor more problems than aldo but connor would find a way to win with his superior stand up .
Patrick Rooney Connor may have been able to get back to his feet after those takedowns but I also don't recall Connor defending even one takedown. Each time Chad Mendes tried to take Mcgregor down, he didn't show any real resistance. Mcgregor vs Edgar could go both ways though and I see Edgar winning if it goes to decision but that fight has good chances of not even getting past the first two rounds cause Connor is a beast and can probably find a way to knock him out.
Edgar is a boring fighter.hate to say it.he wins always everyone single one of his matched my descion.but if he does take Conor down he will win by descion.i just don't see Edgar's stand up as goods as Conor's.so Edgar can hopefully do what Mendes did and not fuck up
That 2 week training camp is just a excuse. These fighters stay ready all year, I even heard Chad say that himself. You made a mastake Chad and you paid for it. Aldo still the Feather Weight King until he loses. Still good job Conor.
Drughi Genk indeed, I ve never been a fan of his arrogant and outrageous banter but he certainly has always had a first class fighting style and his heart and determination as well as his post fight comments made me a fan. congrats to all the fighters on the main card, it was the best I ve ever seen in terms of mma. cheers
People saying he trashtalks alot, he doesnt if im honest, he is convinced of what he says, you cant say thats trashtalks, and definitly not when he backs it up. Always shows great respect after the fight towards his opponents...
Those elbows weren't glancing blows, Conor. He was hammering you like a nail. The guy's got a great chin, but I don't see him taking those shots like that at 155. Mendes is smaller than him, bottom line. He's not eating those elbows like that when they're coming from Donald Cerrone.
My Dad thought the Robbie-Rory fight was terrible -.- only the first 8 minutes were boring. It was good until the end of the third round then it became great. Just pure who wanted it more. That was an amazing fight. My dad confuses me ugghh
The fight between Rory and Robbie was definitely the one that I will remember. Besides round 1, it was an absolute war and showcased the talent of both fighters. Even though I really wanted Rory to win, Lawler proved that he is a true champion and that fight absolutely deserved fight of the night. I do think that Rory would have won a decision though.
Away from the fight itself which was great, Conor really speaks like a champion, i like the way he handles himself and answered the questions. Was great to see him paying his respects after the fight also. True sportsman.
my bad i thought you were talking about prize money. reebok deal is terrible for the older fighters who wont be around when it eventually becomes successful
mrZ0NES actually rory got 50k added to the 59k cause he and lawler got fight of the night plus the money dana gives fighters after good fights so rory probably got an extra 100000
I give him that, he is tough, I didn't think he have a chance against Mendes but I think that's it for him, Frankie and Aldo are on a whole different level.
Nathan Holstrom hahaha that is some serious joke my friend, look at the cut about his left eye, it's a nice plan to defend vicious elbows with your face lol. Jokes apart, he barely won and I'm not saying he got lucky or anything, because he invested in some good body shots in the beginning but I think everybody knows he got no chance against Aldo because of his zero ground game.
I'm not so sure, mcgregor beat one of the best wrestlers in the world when only given two weeks notice to prep for a wrestler, mcgregors a smart fighter and he gets better with every fight given a full camp he could be a whole different animal
Mohammed Al-Shaikh that's what they said before the fight to chad, they said aldo, chad and frankie are on a whole different level, one down two to go. lol xD
Santa Claus Respect to Chad but the "Destroying" word is too much i think, yes caught him with some big shot while they were standing but did you see mcgregor wobble? nope, other guys would have wobble orknock down with that punch of Chad, that elbow i think that cut Conor's right eye was the only significant thin that he did.
CM kept his word & iron fist. Hard part is keeping the title. I believe he can do it & three things he needs to work on.. 1- Ground Game 2- Keep your guard up (Anderson Silva) 3- LightWeight in future, continue to be hungry.. A lot of talent in that division.. Congrats on title ( not interim) but being the FW champion of the world!
"is that all you got"? are there any real long time fight fans in here? does anyone know who kept saying "is that all you got"? in a major title fight>>????
Zander Cage There is some black idiot who was going to fight Al Ialquinta (Bobby Green or something), he get's battered all the time but talks shit to his opponent as if it was nothing. In fact Conor reminded me of him. But Conor at least does have some skill. Conor was getting battered by a 2 weeks notice Mendes and taken down at will. lol
***** Actually yes, I have trained over the years. Regardless of that, within the first round Chad looked pretty gassed. There have been other fights where heavier strikers have gone harder to the body and still not seen the opponent looking that gassed in the first round. Although, conditioning may have been a factor for Mendes as he only had a two week training camp.
***** I v e watched the fight several times now and you are quite right, the body shots took a serious toll, not only in the first but throughout the fight and especially before the final exchange..
Chad is such a cool dude... Seriously how can you not like this dude.... Even if I cheered for Conor I can still admit that Chad is really a nice stand up guy
early stoppage?????? he was laying there getting punched whilst turtling up...bloody hell, not to mention the shot that dropped him and the shots before, a kick to the body, culminated in damage that was visibly overwhelming him to the point where his body shut down and went into shell and protect mode..
Fabio Leão peoples champion alright . wouldnt show up to fight even though people had spent their hard earned money to see him because of a brused rib . .... please.
Gunnar Nelson is a straight beast. The way he dismantled Thatch (who is a pretty good fighter) shows Gunnar is a beast in that division. He should be getting top five fighters soon of sure. P.S. Gunni reminds me of a fucking Viking; more specifically, he looks AND acts like Ragnar Lothbrok haha.
OH Fucking great, this guy is now going to be EVERYWHERE. It would be cool with me if he didn't have fans that ruin the UFC and sport, and he could be a humble guy like Wiedman but no, he will be fucking everywhere so annoying.
So are you saying he is a good fighter but you just don't like his mouth? I hope thats what you mean and you just don't hate a great fighter because he talks shit
mcgregor has proved himself but mendes really did need a full camp, mendes looked gassed in round 1 compared to his war with jose aldo for 5 rounds and the pace they fought at just goes to show how important it really is.
Please fire herb dean..most fights that were bad stoppage came from him either he's paid or fucking stupid for stopping the fight with 3 seconds left . The worst part was that those punches Connor threw at end weren't clean they were partially blocked .herb dean sucks this fight could have been better not saying it wasn't.
skater78207 There were three seconds left...how about letting him finish the round and then stop the fight if you don't like how he gets up? He was covering up. We constantly hear how these guys are "warriors" and "beasts", let them fight like it then. 3 seconds left, covering up.
If there was 1 min or 30sec then yea Mendez has no chance to recover but 3 sec hell make it to the next round and maybe win if he takes him down ..if this was any other fight Dana would be bitching about the same shit
Conor seems perfectly humbled. It was good to see him go through such adversity and still get the win that I feel he deserved. Couldn't of asked for a better outcome.
Anyone saying it was fixed are delusional you do realize when somebody is gassed out they are easier to put on their ass right ? have anyone of you lot had a fight before ? chad was gassed and it was a sweet left on the button chad tried to recover he had heart to try but Conor then was standing over him landing blows to the back of the ear he was 100% done KING CONOR Jose WILL fall that's if he dont retire ow his little plan didn't work MENDES fought well respect to him the fight went like I thought it would mendes dominated the ground BUT conor answered the question took minimal damage when on the mat and did maximum damage when he was on the feet
Anyone that says its fixed is just stupid. Why tf would UFC fix a fight where McGregor looked helpless on his back. Now I agree the stoppage was a bit earlier but I have seen much worse.
Chris Malinowski not early, he was done, like conor said, those body shots took a serious toll, another one before the finishing exchange sealed the deal..
1st fight: McGregor vs Brimage. "Conor is not UFC caliber" 2nd fight: McGregor vs Holloway. "It's real test for McGregor" 3rd fight: McGregor vs Brandao. "Brandao has 1 punch KO power" 4th fight: McGregot vs Poirier. "Poirier can drag Conor to deep waters" 5th fight: McGregor vs Siver. "He never faced UFC veteran" 6th fight: McGregor vs Mendes. "He never faced wrestler with KO power"
Have you also realised he's never mentioned his Ma or his da or his bjj training partners or his wrestling couch or his pad man or his sister or anyone. He mentioned them all in one word 'team' no need to be going on mentioning every name.
Dude, Ofcourse he mentioned his training partners, coaches and his parents. If you have watch all the UFC media obligations with Conor in it, you would've known. I agree with you also, he does mentioned them 'all' in one word 'team'. But just think about it, she does do all the cooking, all the hospitality and take personal care of Conor. I mean she deserved a shout out atleast once. Just a thought a buddy.
When was lee Hammond and joey Breslin mentioned(his bjj training partners) or when was Sergey pikulski(wrestling coach) or Owen roddy(pad man) Tommy Egan, countless names. He just mentions them all in one cause it's easier. And yeah I do agree with you that she deserves a shout but a lot of people on his team did and he shouted them all out in a very humble way I thought. I agree they all deserve shouts but that's just strenuous man you know what I mean.
And just another thing, I remember an interview(because I watched all the videos for the build up) with him saying how he loves to spoil his girl friend and it fills him with pride, that he was able to stop her from working, and that she stuck with him through the tough times so tbh he did shout her out bud.
Bill crab well his stamina would have been alot better if he had a full camp, thats all im sayin. hes had many full 5 round fights without gassin, last night he was basically gassed after 1.
McGregor is a beast well done sir proving the haters that you're one of the best Well done to Mendes for taking the fight and shaking McGregors hand after the fight
Fixed as fuck. Mendes getting huge paycheck plus not losing face cause he dominated Conor for most of the two rounds so he can come up with having not full training camp excuses.
Fussel He "dominated" Conor for 2 Rounds? There was no point in time within those 2 rounds that Mendes had McGregor in any danger what so ever. Matter of fact, The only significant strike he landed that did any true damage was an elbow from the top that cut him in the 1st round other than that nothing really.
Such a bloody event ! Even Jules Cesar might be Jealous of those Modern gladiators... but comon Dana Mcgregor already rich other fighters deserve a bonus
Your so full of shit, why the fuck would Mendes fake getting his ass knocked out, he obviously wanted it from Aldo but failed miserably TWICE! Now lost and badly to THE FUCKING NOTORIOUS!! All Mendes has is wrestling experience, he is not compatible with mcgregor or even being the number 1 contender. Fuck outta here boy!!
Conor proved himself. He did not come out as fresh as he usually does, he just look mentally and emotionally drained from all the media/ weight cut and still pulled it off. Beating Mendes is a big deal, and it makes the Aldo fight even better. The wrestler question is out, and now it's who is the best striker. Conor worked hard and it paid off, he deserves much respect and time to enjoy his success. As a UFC fan you couldn't be happier about the PPV. As a Canadian, Rory you made us all proud with your endurance, your a champ in our eyes, and as a friend of the Irish, Congrats to your champ!
I apologize for doubting mcgregor. I was one of the leading critics of mcgregor on every video UFC posted, I was hating on him. But I realized man the sport needs this. Almost half a million people were tweeting about the fight an hour after it was over. Fuckk this guy is so exciting to watch. I respect Mendes for taking this fight in short notice and imposing his wrestling but it was clear he gassed out because of not having a full camp. I've never seen Mendes get gassed in the 2nd round. However, he was also hurt bad going into the second by those body kicks. They look flashy but they have power behind them. Conor also hits like a fuckinggg truck. That left hand he throws seems to down almost every opponent. He reminded me of Anderson silva and it was glorious. But his MAJOR weaknesses were exposed: WRESTLERS. I mean Mendes was taking him down any time he wanted and doing damage with elbows. Anderson silva was the same way, he struggled against wrestlers, but he was a black belt on the ground and had a weapon against wrestling. Conor has ZERO, and that worries me that he will get mauled by Frankie Edgar who never gets tired and has the heart to keep dragging Conor to the ground. Another thing I noticed he gets hit by major shots. Anderson silva rarely got hit. Conor ate a few over right hands in the fight. Going against Aldo that worries me. I can't wait for Aldo vs mcgregor. He proved a lot but also showed he had a lot of weaknesses. But I am now rooting for him to succeed because the amount of excitement and buzz he brings is something I've never seen before. He came to the fight in a police barricade for Gods sake lmaoo
